View Full Version : Web design show.
I know this was brought up in the other thread, but thought that since programming things such as games and creating websites really weren't related, that this should have it's own thread.
As the title says, I think a web design show would be a great addition to the rev3 line up.
Web design isn't a horribly extensive and deep subject to cover, as would programming in my opinion, so creating an entertaining show that will actually teach its viewers about web design would be quite feasible.
I think the best way to teach someone something is to go step by step through an example. So for this show, I think it'd be best if you have the host, whoever that may be, create a website from scratch and have the followers view him step by step. Perhaps teaching the audience how to manipulate and use such resources as drupal and cherrypy. Of course, going line by line would be rather extensive and boring. So, just conveying main ideas, tips and tricks and at the end of the show, showing the progress that was made during that show by displaying the website at its current state in the development form.
I think this would please a lot of the viewers, for there are many, like myself, who would like to learn how to design websites.
Also, this would fit in perfectly with the rev3 line up as it would perfectly complement Pixel Perfect. Viewers will be able to use skills learned in graphic design from Bert and apply them to this web design show. I think this would make viewers want to learn how to graphic design, increasing demand for Pixel Perfect, and inversely make viewers then want to learn how to web design to see their graphic designs at work on a webpage, thus increasing the demand for the web design show.
+ Throwing ideas out.

I would love it. I've worked on/run websites pretty much since 8th grade, but I'm not even close to being an expert in the field. Especially with school, I'm just too busy to maintain a website for a long period of time, so usually once I start a project or start working for a new website, I have to do a lot of refreshing and relearning. A show would be a great tool for people interested in web design or for those of us who don't have the time to be a full-time web designer, but would like to learn new tricks and keep our memory fresh.

See I feel the same way for the most part, but I am becoming a fulltime webdesigner and this kind of show would just keep me even more inspired!

It would be cool as long as "web 2.0" isn't pushed into our faces...
It would have to definitely deal with web standards, css, xhtml, the different technologies (php, rails, etc.), the "just because you can doesn't mean you should", best implementation there of. Sorta like a A List Apart show.
I too am a web dev... and it would be cool.

Id love to learn some php and stuff.
+1 digg from me
If you dont go line by line on the show (would take too long), then post snipets or the full source of code on a page so people can play with it.
Better yet, start off by creating a very basic page. then start adding some php, and as time goes, the veiwers will follow along on the very same project at home, and at then end of the week, they will have changed a fresh page into a whole new page, following steps shown.

I'd like to see a show on how they did the digg.com website.
Kinda like a behind the scenes stuff. That would be neat.

Well there is a web design podcast (audio)
It is called Dot Web you can visit it here (http://www.thelpodcast.com)
You might have heard about this in the general discussion thread.
It is just starting and actually the first two episodes are not what I have decided to do. I am changing how I do things for the next episodes, and these changes will be more like what you guys are looking for. A podcast on web design. How to make websites.
The next episode I am interviewing Daniel Burka, the lead designer of digg.com
Enjoy

I like the idea. I think if the host/designer starts out with a blank site except for a forum and adds new things each episode (forms, flash animation etc) then people can go to the site after watching the show and post comments/questions on the forum. The site will of course have adsense from the get-go so there will be at least some revenue... Rev3 can use their relationship with Go Daddy to negotiate some super-cheap hosting.

Hey, that is not a bad idea.
I think some episodes of Dot web will be that, creating a website from scratch.
Cool

Here, here! This is a great idea. There are many ways to do the show, you could create one from scratch, or spotlight a particular site and rebuild it or whatever.

I'd love something like this. I know some (x)html and css and would love to learn about php rails etc. What someone said earlier about "A list apart" style would be ace.

It would be very hard to make the information usful to everyone if you cover noobish stuff then only noobs will watch if you cover complex things then only more hardcore people will watch

I would love to see something like this happen. And if there is a problem with finding someone to host/lead the show I would be down.

This is a great idea, A web design show, but it should be used to show new scripts and how to use them, like prototype, and moo.fx. To show a website being made wouldn't be a great thing, because there are so many different ways to do something, and so many techniques, that it's best to learn on your own. But as far as cssing out a website, that starts in photoshop is a great idea.

Yes, I would love this too. As others have said, we like Rev3 and what they have done with other shows...I have not looked in months, but as of last look there is not a lot of good quality shows on web design. Since it does change so much, there definitely would be content for the show!
