Disk Copying or Disk Imaging

Should I image or copy, I ask because I'm at college and worry about projects and my code portfolio, so I need to know which is the most versatile in case my laptop is stolen, explodes or the smurfs come take it you know worst case scenario.
So any one got an answer?
