For the past week my firefox 3.5.3 keeps on crashing randomly.

First it starts to be unresponsive.

Then it crashes and goes to the mozilla crash reporter.

When I restart it it crashes after one minute of being opened.

How can I fix this?

You could create a new profile (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles).

Doesn't help. Already tired that.

I also started in safe mode and had the same problem with extensions disabled.

I have about 6-8 windows opened all with 5-10 tabs.

Do the pages have any plugin objects loaded in them, Flash or Java for example?

not that I know of?

would happen because of all the windows/tabs opened?

Also my cpu is always at 100% when firefox is opened.

Ah, windows Vista. I run Windows Vista and am anxious to move on (Windows 7). I have had random problems like this before and ended up rolling back my entire system. About the processor, what programs are you running at startup, what is your system specs????

Get rid of norton and see if that fixes the problem, itf it doesn't, don't put norton back on.

I agree get rid of norton.

Norton isn't causing it because it also did this when I didn't have norton installed. It also happened with bitdefender, panada, AVG, ETC.

Also does any one know of a good anti-virus program that is good and doesn't make a big impact on my computer's performance or cause problems with firefox?

4 different AV scanners and they're all causing firefox to crash? Unlikely at best. Uninstall firefox completely, reboot, delete any old profiles or left over junk (especially add-ons) and install the latest version. Update all the 3rd party crap that snakes it's way in too - adobe reader, adobe flash plugins, quicktime, etc... Uninstall anything you don't need, even if it's not related to firefox. You might also do some tune-up stuff, like running CCleaner's registry and temp file cleanup.

After you delete Firefox and the files for it that you are aware of, also run a good registry cleaner like CCleaner (its free, Google it, I'm too lazy right now to post a link).

And I have to agree with the others...AV software is not your problem with Firefox.

I don't trust Registry Cleaners, they just make a bigger problem in the long run. All they do is fix What they they think is wrong. If Microsoft doesn't make it, how does it know exactly how windows works.

If your System is any older than a year, you should start fresh with a new Windows install. That is sure to fix problem, and it will fix lots of other problems.

That's the latest (and best, as far as I'm concerned).

Microsoft doesn't know how Windows works.

Seriously tho, the registry is a fairly well documented and understood part of the OS. Stuff can get hosed up when a cleaner doesn't understand how a third party program is hooked in, but I don't think that's usually because of a lack of understanding how the registry itself works.

CCleaner's registry cleaner is pretty conservative. Most of the time it's just pulling out links to files that don't exist any more. I've never had a machine go bad because of a registry clean with CCleaner, and I've run it on dozens of machines. It also backs up the changes so you can try to revert if there's a problem.

Reinstalling is a last resort for most people, but I agree, it's almost a guaranteed way to fix it.
