This one is great.
The person that you're scamming could notice there are no jokers in the deck, thus possibly tampered (if you present this as a new deck). Could mark them with the fifth marking on the wave, though. If the deck has a black and a red joker, you could show this by marking the center of the circle.

Somebody try this trick during a poker game. I want to know how likely it is to get caught and get your ass kicked after doing this.
Good scam though.

Brian.
I'm just curious. The brand new box? HOW? how did you manage to make it look like it came from a brand new box?

This was a nice one. You normally see marked decks for sale but this is awsome. I'm curious to see how the red ink looks on the card compared to the red already there.
I would also like to see if they could pass the scrutiny of an actual poker game. Cuz if you get caught, you're getting your ass kicked. Even with friends.
I've seen the stickers for the flaps of the cards for sale at card trick sites such as Ellusionist. Otherwise, I would probably try to first peel the sticker off the box slowly to try and preserve it. Reapply it once the deck is marked. It will be a little sloppy, but then again, it was Brian that opened the deck of cards, not the doc. So it wouldn't need to pass close scrutiny. Just as long as the mark thought you were opening a new deck.
great show!!!

he had two decks of cards, so i think he just opened the new (unmarked deck) then put it to the side and talked for a bit and then just picked up the deck that was already open (marked deck). sounds a bit to simple but thats what i would do.

I'm sure if your careful when you open a deck of cards then you can probably re seal them with some heat to get the plastic back on..
I was so excited after this trick i rushed to my drawer full of cards, and was sad when i found that none of them have the correct backing lol. Now i totally have to go buy a new deck of cards.

Ooooh that could be quite a possibility. False Memory ftw.
Hmmm.. I'm surprised he didn't notice the mark deck of cards when he shuffled them.

As long as you have cards with a backside that is just white and another color you can make up your own marking system. It'll be even harder to detect since I bet almost everyone one who knows about it knows this version because it's so simple, and that backside is the most common for playing cards.

I love the "transcript" for this episode. It reminds me of a Chinglish operators manual.

You could invent your own marking system that fits cards you have. ...depending on how decorative the backs are, of course.
I have some MSNBC cards that I got from the most recent NYC Diggnation. I figured out a system I could use to mark those...but I'm not going to bother because the deck is unusual enough that people would probably suspect them being marked from the start.

Nobody ever notices. Especially if it's not used in a magic trick (but instead to cheat with cards)... if you're just playing with your friends, why would you think to check for marked cards?

It depends how obvious you do. If you're always the one bringing the "sealed" deck of cards and always wins then no friends would play with you. But if it's a "gang" and you try to fool a single person then it's hard to find out.
I knew a police officer from a magic club and he was looking after scam cases. He told us a story about a gang using marked cards in a pub. They first get to become the cards supplier of the kiosk near by. The player (loser) didn't know that the brand new cards from the shop already marked.

Good scam though.

I like it!
Especially, Brian used the word "prediction" which made the effect much stronger.
That sounds like, I know your decision even before it has been made hahaha...
Great stuff!

to get the plastic off: I made 3 exacto cuts to the bottom, making the base of the wrapper like a flap, and I slid the deck out.
Forget the seal. Go for the bottom. Exacto the glue between the flaps.
Pull the cards out a mark. I marked the jokers by marking the center dot, but having no suit marked, but I can think of a few other decent variations.
To put it all back together, I used a little glue on the bottom flap of the pack. Then slid into the wrapper. I took some invisible tape (small pieces) and slid them sticky-side out into the wrapper with enough extra to fold over and reattach the flap. My version looks like it would hold up to any reasonable scrutiny. Plus, no one is going to be looking at the bottom of the wrapper at that point.

I suppose one of the hard parts is getting a deck with a design that lends itself to marking. Queen's Slipper, for example, is terrible for marking as the design is completely uniform checks except for the wheel in the middle.
Also, don't be an idiot like me and get ten cards in before realising that you've marked one wrong. D'oh!

if you're just playing with your friends, why would you think to check for marked cards?
...perhaps because of my inherent distrust of my friends? ;)

so i was trying to practice so i could get a better reaction time on seeing what the card is(cuz my damn friend would draw and cover the card with his whole hand... but he left a glimpse of what it was...) i noticed if u want to use the marked cards in poker games. u would need to mark the opposite side on the card of what he marks in the episode, because when u hold a hand in poker games it covers the right corner of the card thats marked and you can only see the unmarked side. so i might suggest marking the opposite corners if u want to see what cards they are holding during poker games.

When I bought the little package of the three sharpies colored red, blue, and black I figured that I would try and see if it worked with the blue deck and it works perfectly. I have marked a few decks and it turns out that blue decks are the exact same color as the blue sharpie...but the red decks are a little bit different than the red sharpie. For some reason, using the blue sharpie with the blue decks works about 100% better than the red sharpier on the red decks. So use the blue decks when you are marking decks because it works a million times better and makes it a million times easier to hide your marks because of similar the colors are (compared to the red sharpie to the red deck). I figured that I would just let you know about that one for future reference.

But I think that when you tell other people about it in the future, you should show them the blue deck and using it with the blue deck.
