There seems to be a run on people wanting external drives at the moment as forum topics ... search around a little for some alternate advice.

But in your case:
Get as large as you can afford ... and remember to back it up if this is going to contain your files for school, and you will be transporting them back and forth probably in less than optimal conditions (bouncing around in the bottom of a backpack).
Firewire vs USB. OK, IEEE1394 is faster (Firewire is an Apple trademark), but the difference is the sustained transfer rate ... and in the end its pretty much a wash. USB will be fine, and you'll save yourself the added cost of the IEEE1394 interface on the drive.
Power. Not all drives are created equal. Larger drives often need a secondary power source - either a second USB port, or an external wallwart. Something to be aware of - but rare if you stick to a "name brand" like Western Digital or similar.

thing to remember

I have a cheap No Name brand 500 Gig (although it is actually 599 Gig). I got it for about $80 at Walmart. It has a transfer speed of at least 25 MB each second. Although I live in Canada and prices might be different for you.
