So I've recently begun broadening my literary horizons in both novels and comics. Novels has seen me head past fantasy into espionage and history, comics has seen me add to my shelf Local, Asterios Polyp, Essex County, and of course the Queen and Country definitive's.
What next (comic wise)? What other comics should I be looking at if I liked Essex and Asterios and Local?

If you are ready for it, Sleeper Season One and Season Two. It's going to blow you away.

Can't argue with Sleeper - amazing stuff.
As far as Brian "Local" Wood stuff, I'd suggest just about anything he's done recently:
Demo by Wood and Becky Cloonan out there. It's got that super hero element to it, but it's more about character than powers.
Northlanders or DMZ are great political/crime/espionage kind of books in two very different settings. Northlanders started kind of slow, but the last two arcs (along with that elements of fighting standalone a few issues back) have been great. DMZ - give the first trade a try. If you dig it, it only gets better.

The Nobody also by Jeff Lemire was amazing. If you liked Essex County then you'll know doubt dig it.
Of course, Blankets if you never got around to that. About a teenage boy growing up and falling in love, as well as religion and his faith.

I am on a really big Matt Kindt kick right now. I would highly recommend both Super Spy and 3 Story by him. If you want a sneak peek at his style, check out his Black Widow story in Strange Tales #2, out this week.
Three words: Box Office Poison. Amazing character driven comics with independent flair.
If you dig history based comics, might I suggest Northwest Passage? It's an amazing historical comic with a whole annotated section in the back that provides historic relevance. Good stuff.
I'm also a big fan of American Born Chinese. It's one of my favorite graphic novels in my collection, and it's such a great story. Really amazing stuff. There's a reason it's an award winner.

Box Office Poison, yes, and Tricked as well. I'd get Paul Pope's 100% and Heavy Liquid as well, and maybe give Persepolis a read as well. Oh, and BONE.

I second Demo.
Maybe Strangers in Paradise?
