View Full Version : Should I give my xbox 360 up for a PS3?

Hello all,
My intentions are not to start a flame war but realize its probably impossible with a topic like this.
My 360 is starting to lock up randomly and freeze. This is exactly what happened the other 2 times before it RROD on me. I am about to cut my losses and gather everything up and hull it down to the gamestop to trade in.
I am on a budget raising a family so I cannot afford to have both.
My question is has anyone given up their 360 and switched to the PS3? If so did you regret it or were you happy?

Presumably you have a collection of games. The simple fact is that you're not going to be able to recoup the amount of money you spent on those games when you trade them in. The PS3 is a more reliable system, sure, but Microsoft will continue to keep replacing your RROD'd console. Unless there is a particular game or feature of the PS3 you really want over everything you've currently accrued and will buy for the system in the future (perhaps the Blu-Ray compatibility), my vote would be to just stick with 360.
These forums don't really have flame wars ;)

Thanks for the input.
Problem is my system is now out of the 3 year warranty.

If you end up with a dead console, you could just buy the cheapest Arcade system, and swap over your hard drive. It would still save you money over starting over with a PS3.

First off sorry to hear about your console but I agree that the money already invested in the 360 wouldn't be worth trading for a ps3 but everyone I know who owns both systems say they play their ps3 more then their box. But they also say the PSN is nothing like Live. I'm huge on online gaming so my system of choice is the xbox. I will be getting myself a ps3 for Xmas so hey if you can wait that long I'll give you a pesonal review of which is better. But as it stands you just got to make a list and weigh the options.

I own both systems and I would say there are a couple of factors to consider.
Do you game online with friends? If so, do you have enough friends with PS3s that you won't be missing out when you switch?
Do you give a damn about achievements? If you do, would you mind starting over with the PS3's trophy system?
How married are you to console exclusives like the Halo games, Gears of War and Left 4 Dead?
Do you use Netflix? Are you willing to lose the ability to stream video in order to have access to Blu-Ray quality?
If it were me, considering your situation, if online gaming isn't a factor I might go with the PS3. You'll spend an extra $100 for the system and have to start over from scratch with the games, but you get a lot of bang for that buck. There are many more exclusives, Blu-Ray, and web capabilities. Plus you will be able to get most of the games that you can get on the 360.

I''m sure most people with only one system or the other will do as I do and recommend sticking with the system they favor... So...Get a PS3. If you need friends, you can find them online. Add me, even. PSN: adolson. (Note that I keep my list clean - people who don't sign on for like 2 weeks plus, I delete).
I don't know what makes Xbox Live supposedly so great and worth paying for, but consider the PSN is free and quickly reaching parity with XBL, plus your hardware is likely to be more reliable (and if you're in Canada, you can extend your official warranty by up to four additional years, at a cost, of course, but worth it for the peace of mind). If my PS3 died on me repeatedly like everyone I know who owns a 360, I wouldn't keep going back and frankly, I'm shocked at how many people do.
There are a lot of great exclusives already, with many more on the way. You've enjoyed the 360's exclusives, so now it'd be a good time to switch up and try the others.
Just my opinion.
EDIT: that $100 price difference is really only valid if you're comparing the PS3 to the Xbox 360 Arcade - not really a fair comparison whatsoever.

I have both.
Keep the xbox. I've not enjoyed the ps3 since I bought 3 or 4 months ago. Despite the xbox being a poor build quality it is a lot more fun to play on.
I'm sure the ps3 has some good games, I just can't be bothered spending the time and money finding them. If I have the choice between spending $100 on a new game I'll spend it on an xbox game that I can play with friends.

I'd advise you stick with the 360. At least if it dies, it's covered by the 3 year RROD and if it last 3 years you probably have a good one. If you get a PS3 and it dies (like mine and my friends) outside it's 1 year warranty your out of luck. The PS3 IS better hardware in general, as far as reliability. I think Uncharted 2 is really only the second truly great PS3 exclusive so far (the other beeing MGS4). XBL is still a fair bit ahead of PSN in terms of features (cross-chat, party system, status, arcade demos and soon Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm). 360 still has great exclusives like the Gears 1 & 2, Halo 3, Forza 2 & 3, GTA DLC, Left 4 Dead, Crackdown, Fable II, Project Gotham Series, Shadow Complex etc. Of course PS3 has Bluray and some exclusives coming like God of War and GT5.
I think the PS3 has had a lot of momentum with the price drop and some good games coming but right now, the 360 has a very strong case.
In the end it's a personal choice and who really cares which system your on? Most games will hit both systems. I'd say go with whatever system has the games you want to play right now (not games that aren't on the shelves yet or potential releases, you can't play them). If that changes, then choose another system.
Keep in mind that Sony is marketing a lot on potential and Microsoft are selling on what they can give you right now. Both ARE marketing campaigns. The idea that Sony has more exclusives is a little misleading when you actually look at the facts. The RROD fiasco would have killed the 360 if not for a great library of games and a killer online service. The next 6 months will be very interesting for the PS3.

Stick with the 360... especially if you have any interest in online play.
I had a 360 since launch and recently bought a PS3 when the slim came out. While I love my PS3 for the exclusives and blu-ray, if it's a multiplatform title then I will get it on the 360 every time. The online play on 360 is infinitely superior... while the PS3 is certainly usable you will definitely be frustrated on the PS3 by everything you can't do. I also seriously prefer the 360 controller, UI, and downloadable content (I buy about half my games on XBLA).

I thought I might provide context to my original post by mentioning I have all three consoles. I've had a PS3 far longer than a 360 (it came with our Sony TV), but I still think you've invested such a lot of money into the 360 that starting again with PS3 might not be worth it. And for what it's worth, I think the PS3 has a nicer interface. Something about the 360 GUI still confuses me. I think its headings are more ambiguous. Anyway, a topic for another day.
(Corny) Tip: Do a pros and cons list for staying or switching. Add up how much you've invested in all your 360 gear, list off games you like/want, the features you like etc. Also, call up your local trade in store and work out how much you'd get for everything.

No. WTF would you want to? You won't get enough for the XBOX 360 to be worth replacing it. Get a PS3, yes. But, keep the XBOX 360. Game consoles aren't chicks. There's no rule that says you get only one. I'm on a budget raising a family. I own a XBOX 360, Wii and PS3.

You and I are very fortunate that we are in a position where we can afford our homes and everything we need for our families, and still afford all three consoles, but not everyone can manage that in the best of times. I have friends that don't have children and live in a modest home and still can't manage to buy a new game more often than every six months or so.
Xbox Live is so frequently praised because of how great it was at the launch of the 360, and how they've continued to make improvements. Online play is usually problem free. It has always been easy to tell when you receive a message and what people on your friends list are doing at the time. Chatting with friends (now groups of friends) is possible regardless of which games each person is playing. Essentially everyone online with the 360 has a headset, making the online experience of team based games a better experience. I still find the overall interface for these things better on the 360 than the PS3, but I'm willing to allow that it's a matter of familiarity and preference rather than definite superiority.
It's worth the money because that is where my friends are. PC and PS3 aren't options for my entire group. We used to hang out in person most nights, but now we've moved across the country. If I want to hang out with those guys (which I do) then Live is where I can do it. You are right that the feature set of the PS3 is getting very close now, but that is not enough for me to give up my Xbox online play. $30 a year (if you shop around) to hang out with my closest friends every week is a bargain.
I think my $100 difference is pretty valid in this instance. If we were talking to someone with neither console it would be different, but for the TC it is a $100 difference.

i'll start off by saying that I have yet to experience the PSN, the fact that it's free is very attractive but I think it's part of the problem. because we pay for it I assume microsoft got the dough to serve us up some high quality online experience and they've been doing it since the original x box. the ps2 had free online play as well I think but the problem was that anyone could get online and play so you would get people with dial-up connections trying to hang with the big dogs and that really bogged down games. I don't know how it is now with the PSN if they have bandwidth requirements.
Then again all this is irrelevant because if you are on anything less then about 5 mb down and 2mb up you shouldn't be online gaming anyway. and everyone pretty much has broadband.

If your looking to get better value for the games if you plan on trading them in I would suggest trading sites like swaptree.com and goozex.com. You'll get far more for your value and it's a really great way to build a collection on new systems. I have gotten a lot of my UMD based PSP games (every Extend Extra, Puzzle Quest, God Of War) from both sites and also a lot of PC games (Gears of War, Mass Effect, Company of Heroes) from the PC I just built by trading older PS3 games or even books and dvds (Swaptree).
As for making the switch, I can't really comment on the 360 being as I don't own one but I do own the PS3. Some features on the PS3 that are kinda forgotten are it's HTPC capabilities. I use it all the time to stream from a PC (Netflix, Hulu, Revision3, CBS) but I also ripped my entire dvd collection and dumped them directly onto the upgraded hard drive (Check to make sure formats are supported before doing). Thats another thing, the hard drives aren't proprietary and are easily upgradeable / inexpensive. Batteries are built into the controller, no headset with purchase but most USB headsets work, also Bluetooth headsets work. It plays all PS1 games, (Kinda forgotten about with the dropping PS2 BC) and it plays blu-rays. The PS3 really is a great value, and the new slims save on electricity also. The most faulty piece of hardware is the BD drive and if that ever fails I'm just going to keep using the PS3 as a HTPC and PSN games machine and just buy a slim. That way I wont have to pay the $150 to fix it.
Sony has done a real good job with 1st party games lately, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted 2 and have a lot more coming in 2010, MAG (Which is surprisingly awesome!), God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5, and The Last Guardian all look great. It really does seem like a good time to make the switch. You wont have Cheevos (OMG!) or a GS anymore but who really cares. I have trophies but I don't care about them, they serve to do cool shit in games and that is it, I was trying to do cool shit in video games long before Cheevos or Trophies and will continue to do so.

When I had to decide which console to get I went with the PS3 due to the reliability of the hardware and that fact that wifi came built in and was a free service. I will say it is finally paying off with some great exclusives starting to come out (ie Uncharted 2 and GoW3), but I do wish I could get my hands on Fable 2 and Gears of War ;( The only other Xbox exclusive I care about it is Masseffect 2, but that I can get on the PC. I also do find myself wishing that the online community was as good as I hear Xbox owners saying there's is. Fingers crossed that the rumors of Netflix, when ever the Xbox exclusivity deal ends, will come to the PS3 as well... Other positives are of course the blue ray player, internet browser is nice (ie able to watch TRS on it! not sure if you can with the Xbox), and some good PSN games too.
But that's the perspective from a PS3 Owner with no Xbox experience if it helps with your decision...

If you really want Netflix watch instantly I would recommend either the PlayOn media server that can put your watch instanntly queue on your PS3, or you can buy the Roku box that does Netflix and Amazon VOD service.

My question is has anyone given up their 360 and switched to the PS3? If so did you regret it or were you happy?
I'm one of the people that made the jump from 360 to PS3 -- I had a 360, graduated from college, everything I owned got shipped home when I moved to my first job, realized I was without a system and decided to pick up a used PS3 from Amazon.
I'm happy, to answer your question. But you'll probably need to figure out, like some have already said, about what it is you're looking to do when you game.
From a Multiplayer perspective, I think the 360 screams Multiplayer -- it wants you to connect to the net, use their DLC, and get into deathmatches online asap.
When I game, I tend to fly solo -- I like the bigger, more expansive worlds (so we're talking Fallout, Oblivion, and Borderlands from what I've come to understand.) that you can get lost in, so that multiplayer appeal isn't very much up my alley. Score one for PS3 in my book.
You'll also want to take a look at the proprietary titles that are coming out NEXT year, in addition to whats out. You've got your Mass Effect, Gears of War (Ty Dolson), Halo on one side, versus Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma on the other side -- all phenomenal games.
In terms of graphics, and I'm just being honest from what I've seen -- nearly identical between the systems.
DVD in the 360, Blu-Ray for PS3 (In a recession, I'd give the trophy to the 360 here.)
So really, what I would do to help you decide: figure out what type of a "gamer" you are (Multi vs. more Solo stuff.), the types of games you like (I can't do a sweeping generalization but from what I've seen, 360 seems to have more FPS exclusive titles than PS3, which seems to have a little bit wider array of games.), and which of those games coming out next year most appeal to you.
EDIT: Redundancy FTL

Wait a second... console thread that hasn't turned into a flame war?!?!? What is wrong with you people? JK of course this thread is a breath of fresh air. I own both a 360 and a PS3 but I play my PS3 more than the 360 ONLY because I enjoy the PS3 exclusives more than the 360 ones. Just a game style preference. What sucks is that I have friends on both so when games like MW2 come out I have to choose who I want to play with more... I guess it really depends on how many games you have and whether the PS3 exclusives are enticing to you. I will say though uncharted 2 is probably the best game I've ever played. I personally have never really noticed too many problems with PSN although the cross game chat on 360 is very nice. I am also in the MAG beta and it runs pretty smooth.

Cross-game chat is almost certainly coming to PS3 soon. A Naughty Dog developer let it slip on the PlayStation Forums and then soon after edited his post. That was after an "inside source" told VG247 that it was coming this month in a firmware update... And after a source on N4G forums who was right about several other things in the past, and he most recently said that the previous firmware wouldn't have cross-chat because it didn't work in a few games from a certain publisher. So, I think it's true. Especially because of the Naughty Dog comment.
A lot of PS3 fanboys would argue that this missing feature is stupid or useless, but I disagree - it's definitely one that I want and think I would use. If I could be playing Oblivion and chatting with some friends who are playing something else, it'd be pretty awesome. There have been many instances in the past where I spent several hours in an evening in video chat with people I met here (MacBstard, JayLaf, NJShadow, and more), and I think I kinda stopped because I was interested in actually playing games. And if it works better than the implementations in games like Call of Duty, Borderlands, and so on, then I'll always opt for that instead.

Also I think another variable is if you game on a PC. I never really got into PC gaming before and a few months back, I decided to build a PC for Windows 7 instead of a 360 and started getting into the PC gaming scene. Some Xbox 360 exclusives also come to the PC (Mass Effect 2, Gears of War, Halo 1/2) but some don't (Gears of War 2, Halo 3) so if you game on your PC or are going to in the future, you may be more willing to drop the 360 for the PS3, because none of the PS3 exclusives will ever go to the PC.
