I need some remote desktop software so me and my boss can control an internet radio station computer from our homes (the software tends to crash a lot). I have tried VNC but it will only let me control the other computer if I am on the same network, which doesn't help me at all. I was wondering if it was just because I was using the free version or if I did something wrong.

you PROBABLY didn't forward the VNC port (5900) to the computer you want to control, when you do, just enter the IP and it should connect...just a note, 2 people can't be VNCing into the same box at the same time

Probably not the brightest of ideas to expose the VNC port. Set up a VPN on the router, if it's supported.

if you are gonna use VNC they just set each machine up with different ports, forward your traffic to each machine on there ports and that should work fine.
What about remote desktop? Built into windows? works great!
Unless these machines do not support it
As for the security issues, I agree with armpit.

That would be great, except for the fact that the only reason we use this is because my bosses son (who is computer illiterate) swears by it. That pretty much means we have to use it.
Just in case do you know of anything better? It needs to work with Live365 and have a lot of features. The program we use is pretty good (SAM Broadcaster) but it has some problems with randomly dumping the que list and no web interface.

:D you can have a try on Remote Desktop (http://www.tomdownload.com/internet/dial_up_connectivity/remote_desktop.htm).

Not sure why you would pay for a remote desktop program when you can just RDP into the computer, from the Remote Desktop Program that comes with most windows.
and remember RDP can take an IP address as input, so you do not need to be on the 'same network'

You are going to trust a computer-illiterate to tell you how to remote in? If you're trying to control a radio station, you might want to opt for VPN. And you know you can't both be controlling the same computer at the same time, right?
