Okay, so I totally love Alex and Heather, but I have yet to watch an episode (I have all of them), because well i'm allergic to milk and everything that goes with it, cheese, yogurt, etc. and like all their episodes have been about stuff that are high in this stuff... just wondering if i'm alone on this...

One of my wife's young cousins as the same problem. Trace amounts of dairy will put her in the hospital.

yeah, if i have more than a spoonful of milk that hasn't been baked into something, it causes an asthma attack, a lot of times if it has been baked into something i'm okay... but yeah it's annoying...

What happens if you don't know you had milk? Serious question.

There are milk substitutes out there, correct? And is it the dairy as a whole itself or a certain part of the milk?

It depends on the allergy.

You can be allergic to the proteins. In that case, soy products are ok.

I can tell you within 20 minutes of accidentally having any milk product, that's why at home we keep liquid benedryl on hand, it great for that... I also have an inhaler I carry just in case...

Yeah, i can have soy milk no problem, they think i might be allergic to some antibiotic or something that they give to cows that stays in their milk, I also tend to not be able to take calcium supplements, as they make me sick as well... so sometime this year I really need to go the allergist...

If it may be an antibiotic, what happens with organic milk?

I can't eat tacos from taco bell. I think I am allergic to some sort of seasoning they use in their meat. I ate their once and got a rash but couldn't pin point it to taco bell (was suspicious that it was them though). I ate there again another time and got the rash again. I told my allergist about it and he suggested I try eating their again but to eat it in his office to see if the rash came back. I got no rash that time. I have no clue if I am allergic to it or not, I stay away from taco bell just to be safe (which sucks cus I love Taco Bell).

man that totally sucks... i know what you mean, once you get sick like that, you try to avoid it, I got food poisoning at Olive Garden the first time i ate there, so it's not my favorite place, i've actually only been there one other time...

I think that I am allergic to aspertaime or nutrasweet... anything diet. FIgures that I can't eat something that isn't going to add extra pounds. I end up feeling real sick after I eat anything with it.

Is it all Ben and Jerry's or just some flavors?

Also on the organic thing, make sure you read the label on the product because there are different types of organic depending on state and local standards. Also, if it's available you could try fresh milk (ie from a farm), stuff that hasn't been processed and homogenized for store sale. I've heard of people being allergic to the additives put in during that stage and so were able to drink farm fresh milk without a reaction.
Although it does taste different than store milk, so that might be an issue too :)

While I don't know if I'm actually allergic or not, I don't eat at Burger King or drink Arizona Green Tea any more, because the last time I did either I got hella sick.

well now all flavors make me sick, or at least all the ones i've had recently. Previously none of them made me sick.

I dunno, i'm just safe and use silk soymilk, i only want milk every once in awhile so it's not bad, as a general rule it's not something I crave.

Artificial sweeteners make a lot of people sick, but this isn't an allergy. It's a lovely little insensitivity.

I can't have artificially sweeteners or things like olestra. This stuff rips my small intestine to shreds. My internal organs are very, very irregular.

When I was a kid I was allergic to orange juice. Fresh oranges were OK, but juice was out (back in the early 70s, unless you squeezed it yourself, OJ was processed with additives).

I grew out of that problem thankfully, and can now drink as much as I like. No other allergies. I love food, and can eat pretty much everything.

Rhubarb leaves?

Rhubarb leaves?

Being able to eat pretty much anything, and choosing not to eat certain things is different. Rhubarb Leaves are too bitter (Oxalic Acid) - I do like Swiss Chard though, but am not a fan of mustard greens (same bitterness you get from rhubarb leaves). My wife is a huge fan of stewed rhubarb though ... however it does nothing for me.

Quick side dish: Fry a little onion and garlic in butter until the onion is lightly browned, then toss in a bunch of torn/cut swiss chard leaves, stir them into the garlic and onion, reduce heat, cover, and left them steam in their own juice - vegie blood - until they are cooked ... doing this removes the metallic taste people ssociate with Swiss Chard (Silverbeet) leaves.

This is awesome with grilled mushrooms, mashed potato, and grilled steak (like a nice ribeye or New York cut).

Rhubarb leaves can make you sick. :)

But the stalks are just delicious. When I was in Oregon we grew rhubarb and I just ate the stalks raw. My mouth's watering now.

I havn't found a food I'm allergic to but am to cats, perfume, pollen, and lots of other stuff use to have like 20 shots in my arm every few of months when I was younger but that didn't work. Now that I am older they still bother me some but not as bad. I don't think I could live without cheese or milk.

I think I have an allergy to red wine. I drank half a bottle last nght, and woke up with a dry mouth, headache, and sensitivity to light.

Actually, I *know* I have an allergy to red wine. I react to the histamines in it ... and have the same reaction to shell fish (crab/lobster only, shrimp/scallops/oysters OK). I enjoy both of these (red wine and shell fish), but KNOW that with just a glass of red or a lobster tail I am going to feel like I got hit by a bus about 2 hours later ... so, I follow the meal with a chaser of an antimistamine and 3 alleve.

Goat milk is less allergenic i think than cow's. Never tried the milk but have had cheese made from it not bad.

From Wikipedia, "It is traditionally made exclusively from goat's and sheep's milk, but cow's milk varieties are also made in some areas, however they are not true Feta, just cheaper substitutes."

Interesting that for all your allergies, no one mentioned MSG.
It is in almost everything that is boxed, bottled, canned, bagged etc.
It is in almost all prepared foods. Many people are allergic to it and symptoms may range from lethargy to life threatening asthma.
I get an all over burning sensation and a roaring headache. This may be accompanied with humming, ringing an buzzing sounds in the head. Ears may hurt, eyes may go out of focus or even temporarily gray-blind. This is a histamine reaction. Antihistimines do not make it go away. I have taken benydril, but the most it will do is to take the edge off. They are not really "anti" anything. They are dehydrators.
Unfortunately this has set off a reaction to anything containing broken aminos or pehnol compounds.

Yeah my dad's allergic to MSG, there was a bunch in some Chinese food we ate, his bottom lip was huge for a couple days.

well Im not alergic to dairy products but I do have reactions to certain vegetables & fruits, I can't eat green peppers in very large quantities cause I don't digest them quite right, I can only eat apples cooked or same thing as the peppers, I love jalapeno's but their a natural laxative for me(stonger so then some store bought laxative), & last but not least I can't eat oranges without getting canker sores or having my acid reflux kick up.

I'm allergic to jello, but nothing else with gelatin in it (i.e. pudding). Weird, huh? I break out in hives all over my body and it's hard to breathe.

I'm also allergic to grass, dust, plants, pollen, etc. but surprisingly, not animals.

I'm allergic to citrus fruits (including tomatoes), milk, chocolate, beer (because of the hops, since I am allergic to trees, grass, and pretty much, any flora). Basically, I eat mostly meat, meat products, grain, and grain products. I take supplements for the many nutrients missing from my diet.
Oh yeah, also chocolate and cola beverages. Coffee is OK though.

No food allergies or anything. (Thank FSM) but drinking too much diet Pepsi will make me sick. Somewhere around 4 glasses a day (or night as the case may be) is where I lose it.

And Zuse, well.. harharhar

I've got an alergy to marijuana, everytime I'm near it I feel whoozy and once I actually tried smoking it once, was the worst experience of my life. Hear strage wooshing noises followed by noises that sound like they came from a marylin manson video in the 90s. I vomitted and it went away a half hour later.
