I was scared when I saw the guys were gonna talk about Stargate Universe this week, because the Stargate universe isn't really something you just jump into.
SG1 was 10 seasons of pure universe building, which Atlantis then added to. It has it's own set of rules and physics which are introduced to you gradually, one at a time, often with whole episodes involved (blackholes slowing down time near an active wormhole, external influences extending the 38 minute window etc. etc.)
My point is that Stargate is a show which is satisfying once you get into the swing of how it works. Scientists ingeniously solve problems in satisfactory ways, often during epic battles... maybe a bit of a truncated description but there you go.
So it seems a bit of a crime that Jeff, Alex and Dan are being robbed of this experience! How about we show them some encouragement, guys and see if we can't peak their interest!

I'd have to agree with Alex in that SGU is by design made so people do NOT need to watch the other series to get into it... that said, yes the show does do some things that were integral parts of the other series, like how the scientist solve problems in ingenious ways and usually last minute.

I haven't watch SG-U yet, so don't know how much you miss if you haven't seen the series before. But SG-1 is one of my favorite series of all time! My top 2 series are Buffy and Twin Peaks but I think SG-1 is number 3. So people should see SG-1 anyway imo.

I watched all of SG1 but haven't seen a single episode of Atlantis...
Is it worth it?

IMO, yes. it feels very much like BSG mixed with SG-1. the overarching story seems to be more BSG + Voyager. Oh and they are wrong. The whole show is NOT shown through the eyes of Eli, the "genius" kid (actually, he makes more references that he's not a genuis... I'd say he's really smart, but overall more like the geeky kid that knows a decent amount about a lot of stuff). I really find it annoying how people draw conclusions about the entire show like that from "3" episodes (really a 2 hour premiere and 1 episode).

Is it worth it?Atlantis or SGU? I'd say yes to both, but I dont think the link between SGA and SGU is as strong as SG1 and SGU. SG1 gives enough of a grounding in the SG universe to know what going on.
SGA added the conflict with the Wraiths, and according to the writers, there will be no alien adversaries from past series. So thats kinda moot.
So far I am liking the look and feel of SGU. Characters are developing nicely (the videolog of the people on board recording a message for home is a hokey but nice way to introduce them without them needing to be key story members). I think its going to be a fun ride.

Def. watch Sg1 (and I would even say atlantis, but at least wait until season 7 or 8 of sg1 before you watch atlantis because they do some sg1 tie-ins that make more sense if you've watched all the episodes up until then).
I will say though that I disagree that SGU is something that can easily be picked up and enjoyed by folks that haven't already been fans of the other series. Even though its taking the series down a different path, it still feels like you would appreciate it more with the background of the other two shows.

I'd bet anything if Jeff had watched SG-1 or Atlantis, that he would have liked SG:U. I don't see why people are saying, "Oh you can just jump right into this series without having seen SG-1 or Atlantis." I wouldn't say that at all. Cause like Jeff, he seemed lost, disinterested and uniformed about how a Stargate show works.
I would HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend taking the time to watch SG-1 and Atlantis. The characters and story lines are so likable and enjoyable. Both shows will forever remain in my favorite shows of all time. At this point you can probably buy the entire SG-1 Box set with every season and have hours and hours of enjoyable TV. Spend a weekend here and there with each other and before you know it, you guys would have watched the entire series.

I've watched all of SG1 and Atlantis and love them both but I am *still* more interested for the boys to watch all of Torchwood. :)
But I'll sign the petition for SG1. I will say it was hard for me to get into at first because of the cheese factor (and it was kind of unintentional cheese) but after the show found its footing SG1 was awesome.
It helps to have a humongous crush on both Daniel Jackson and Samantha Carter. :P
Every time my bf and I see her name in the credits we can't help but read it, "Amanda Tapping" that ass...
It's silly but irresistible.
SG1 was an amazing amazing show - it faltered a little toward the end, but if anyone hasn't seen the two straight-to-DVD movies they did after it watch those, too. They are EXCELLENT.
Also loved Stargate Atlantis - great acting and great characters. I miss that one.

And, for a certain Mr. Trachtenberg, it may help to know that both Morena Baccharin and Jewel Staite, of Firefly fame appeared in SG1 and Atlantis respectively for (what I would consider anyway) long stints. ;)

Personally SG1 is a guilty pleasure. I watched it knowing that the writing was predictable and juvenile even though some of the plot ideas were inventive. It's got a nice base for SG Universe. Thanks to the last episode I'm finally interested in SGU. If I were Dan, Alex and Jeff I'd skip SG1 unless they wanted the back story.
