So after seeing the commercial for the new Motorola Droid, and I was wondering what kind of android phones are available. I'm looking a bit into them, and wanted some other opinions since I am almost it for technology help in my area. So I really like the tactile keyboard that the G1 has, but I'm not so sure about the processor speed. Is this that much of an issue? What about other phones? Carrier doesn't really matter, but should it? I guess you could just unlock it, but would it work? Should I wait and see about the new Droid? Sorry about the barrage of questions, and thank you for your help.

WolfmanFor most of the questions you have regarding which handset to buy the best advice I can give is to go into a store and try them out. See how they feel in your hand. How efficient is the keyboard for your handsize. Its a personal preference.

BUT, a key question actually IS which carrier. The DROID is a Verizon phone, which means it is on the CDMA based call network. If you unlock it, your only other carrier choice would pretty much be Sprint (OK there are some regional CDMA carriers as well). If you walk into TMobile or AT&T, they are GSM and have interchangable handsets ... in theory.

Personally, I would go with the Verizon handset. Why? Coverage. Verizon have the best US domestic coverage (geographically) and the EVDO kicks the AT&T 3G networks butt. Traditionally, they dont have bleeding edge handsets. They broke that mold a little with the Blackberry Storm, but are kicking themselves over not signing Apple for the iPhone (they were offered it first). The DROID will be the second time they have taken a risk as it is the most advanced Android phone in production so far.

If I was going Android (and I might be), I'd be looking long and hard at the DROID.

thanks, the idea of having the same os(basically) across the board makes the decision easier, and the droid does look promising.

It really comes down the the hardware and carrier. I like t mobile's data/phone plan over sprint/verizon. Unlimited data, unlimited nights/weekends, unlimited calls to my fav5, and 300 anytime only costs me $80 a month. I looked into verizon and sprint and they were around 100-120. I sat in the store and played with the My touch 3g for like an hour. It took some getting used to but I really like it. I've had it for about a month now and it's pretty solid.
