Anyone listened to this yet...? I'm just downloading now.
(Apologies if a thread already exists, it won't let me search for 1up).

I listened to 4 Guys 1UP last night. It was alright. I miss a lot of the guys who left, but I'll probably keep listening. David Ellis / lybertyboy doesn't sound very confident to me, though, and usually doesn't. I don't know if he really is lacking confidence or just sounds like it (or maybe it's just my ears), but if so, he should get a boost - he's cool. And I'm glad he chose that name since Garnett was too ________ to use it. (Fill in an adjective that isn't too harsh here.)

It's good and doesn't feel too different from the old, but the lack of Shane makes me sad. He's actually on the latest episode that runs for 3 hours, but I haven't gotten around to listening to it (I'm way behind my podcasting).

On Thursdays G4TV release a podcast called Feedback which has two 1UP alum, Patrick Kleptic and Andrew Pfister, and hosted by Adam Sessler. I've enjoyed it so far and since the episodes are only 20-40 min. long they are a nice fit for my empty Thursdays.

3 hours?! Dear God! Where do you find the time to listen to a podcast that long? I don't listen to many other podcasts, is this a normal time length?

Haha, I was surprised to. It's normally 2 hours but on special occasions it'll go beyond that. Podcasts usually get me through the workday so I have plenty of time to listen, but I've been getting into story-based podcasts so I'm way behind in my gaming ones.

3 hours, wow, that's nuts! When we started the Weekly Geekly podcast we were running at close to 1hr 30mins and for me, it's just too long. There's only a limited audience that want to listen to something that long. I think the ideal length is about 45mins, but it does depend on how many people are involved and it's popularity etc. Our podcast currently runs at around the hour mark and that's with some hardcore editing.
Podcast makers need to realise there's a crowded market out there and people tend to want to listen to a few different things. The minute you go over the hour mark you're seriously limiting your audience in my opinion.

I disagree actually. For audio podcasts, I don't care how long they are. I never listen to a podcast without doing something else at the same time. I like the long ones. I usually listen when I'm travelling, taking the place, working out, doing tasks around the house or stuff like that. Or just surfing the web or gaming.
I like the long ones. 45 minutes is way too short in my opinion.

I listen to or watch several podcasts weekly:
4 Guys 1UP (1:50 min last week)
Joystiq (1:50 min last week)
Podcast Beyond (1 hour usually)
Nintendo Voice Chat (1 hour usually)
Giant Bombcast (2+ hours usually)
TRS (varies, close to an hour I think)
Co-Op (varies, usually 30-45 mins)
I also usually check out the Fullmoon podcast from Insomniac Games, but their schedule seems to not be very regular.
Like poltah, I tend to do other things at the same time, though there are indeed sometimes where I just sit and listen.

Most of my favorite podcasts run well over an hour, and the longer they are the happier I am. I don't think the 1up podcast is hurting for listeners. They routinely talk about how popular the podcasts have been for the site. It's been a staple podcast for my circle of friends for a few years now.

Can you recommend some good story-based podcasts? I've never listened to any of those yet, wouldn't mind giving them a try.
I used to really like the old 1Up show. Something tells me that this new one won't have the same kind of magic.

I listen to between 9 and 12 hours of audio podcasts in a week. The lose of Listen-up leaves a huge hole. Without Garnet and John, I'm not sure I can listen to the new podcast.

This American Life and The Moth Podcast are my favorites.
edit: Just realized that this thread is about the new show without Garnett. Didn't even know he was leaving (like I said, I'm behind!). I feel stupid now. Got to give it a listen.

I listen/watch these two. I also listen to Out of the Game (Jeff Green, N'Gai Croal, Shawn Elliot, Luke Smith, and Robert Ashley) as well I recently started listening to G4TV's Feedback. If it's an audio only podcast I usually play a game or work or whatever. So I spend my evenings or other free time with a podcast on while I'm gaming and love longer podcasts because of that. And if it's a video podcast that is usually my focus but I am surfing the web as I watch it.

In the car and at work, for me.

At work, in the car, sometimes as I'm playing games, while I do house work, sometimes when I'm jogging.

I used to listen to SModcast while I went on walks to get some fresh air, it's now getting a little too cold up here to keep doing that for me. I can't listen to things at work because my job involves too much concentration, and I get distracted easily. And I can't really listen in the car since my commute is less than 20 minutes. I've tried playing games, but i end up not really paying attention and i have to keep rewinding it to figure out what their talking about. I'm all about the video TRS.

Yeah I listened to it. I like David Ellis, and I like the idea that they are going to bring in more developers to talk about games and other stuff. PS Nation does a good job with this also, mostly getting small indie developers but occasionally they get some great interviews with the big boys (Zipper for MAG and Naughty Dog for Uncharted 2 recently). But I'm really looking forward to what Garnett ends up doing with Gameshack and John does with Gamepro. Just like when everyone left 1up before they went on to spawn great podcasts at other places (CO-OP, RebelFM, Bitmob, Geekbox, A Life Well Wasted, Gamespy Debriefings). Unfortunately some of the podcasts that came out of 1up after that were pretty terrible (Good Grief comes to mind) so lets hope that doesn't happen again.

Well I'd love to pimp my podcast here, but it's against forum rules to post about it directly. However, if any of you do happen to come across it, I'd love some feedback. We've not had much so far, although Jeff was very complimentary about it and that put a big smile on my face for at least a day.

Actually, you can. You just can't start a thread to pimp it.
But, if someone asks about good game podcasts, It would only be rude not to answer.
Anyone know any good gaming podcasts?

The Weekly Geekly podcast, as my signature says, is a discussion about Movies, TV and Games with a (slight) UK flavour. What you'll get is roughly three 10 min review segments, a movie then a TV show, then a game and finally about 25-30 mins of a more general Movie, TV or Game discussion (we tend to rotate).
Episode 7, the Halloween episode, is released today and on that we'll be covering:
- Movies: Trick 'R Treat
- TV: Ghostwatch
- Games: I MAED A GAM3 W1TH ZOMBIES 1N IT!!!1 & Zombie Apocalypse
- Discussion: Scary games, those we've played and our favourites etc.
You can find the show on iTunes or get it directly here:

We're quite obviously inspired by TRS and we're not ashamed to admit it. Hopefully if you like TRS you'll like this.
All constructive criticism welcome!

I'll bite. I'm in the UK so it should be my sort of thing. Downloading.

I thought the new 1UP podcast was OK, but Garnett and John have left big shoes to fill. I'm going to struggle to keep up with 90 min + podcasts with the new bunch.

That's my general take on podcasts as well; I'll either listen while gaming, or while on the road over the weekend.
If a podcast is entertaining, more is frequently better. The reason why I've loved the 1UP-casts is that they have the kinds of knowledgable, intelligent conversation (with the occasional innuendo thrown in) that you'll get from places like this forum, but with the recurring cast of people whose opinions you've seen and learned through years of game reviews, articles, etc. You know where they're coming from.
Big Fun, since I'm sure you'll find this thread eventually, cut yourself some slack; it's harder for me to listen to someone cutting down their product than it is to actually take in the production elements you were apologizing for. Just keep the content at the level of the first show, and the rest will fall in line.

I like the long ones. 45 minutes is way too short in my opinion.I'm the exact same way. I'm always listening to podcasts while I play wow. Which is usually multiple hours each day.
I like the podcast to end when it's run it's natural course. You can usually hear when the podcasters are starting to run out of steam. That's when it's time to wrap it up. But I've also listened to podcasts that went for 3 hours and it was great the whole time. It all depends on them.
I listen to:
The Hotspot
GamersWithJobs
Giant Bombcast
Gamespy Debriefings
Retronauts
Rebel.FM
The Geekbox
4 Guys 1UP
Out of the Game
SModcast
iFanboy Pick of the Week
And I watch:
TRS
CO-OP
