Hey I was just Re-watching the SXSW interactive panel, thinking back when I worked in a local hotel (bar) there was a Guinness event at the hotel. There were a couple of guys and girls at the bar during the function having a good time and joking back and forth. It was a great night, had plenty of fun and the guys had themselves a cheap evening. Then a couple of weeks later I went to an Air Show with my friends and there was a Guinness tent... Only run by some of the same people that had been in my bar 2 weeks before, well they recognised me and all my drinks for the day were free. Showing that Some payoffs can take longer but are still worth it.

(p.s. on the night I had an invite back to a room and to this day I'm kicking myself that I didn't go for it. But I had a G/F at the time)

Reciprocation is a good one.
I'd recommend anybody who wants to get into more of this type of social engineering to look up a brit named "AFC Adam". Although his stuff is specifically aimed at picking up women, and is in that way akin to the work of Neil Strauss or Mystery (I know "The Game" has come up briefly on these boards before). However a lot of the stuff he does is more general, I'm a partifuclar fan of his stuff on frame control. Look it up, it's powerful.
