The other downfall I've run across is running apps in the background. You'll run out of memory fairly quickly on a 3G. I havn't tried backgrounding on a 3GS. That aside, the benefits have always outweighed the downfalls personally.

Jailbreaking correction: Icy is an alternative to Rock and Cydia. sn0w (aka blacksn0w) is @geohot's iPhone unlocking thing, and is in now way like Icy. (thanks twitter.com/besweeet for the correction)

Here's my take on jailbreaking: DO IT!!
Look at my SpringBoard:
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/224/img0101.png
Who wouldn't want something like that? It's on a 16GB white 3G, and it runs just as fast as it was without being jailbroken (ok, maybe a LITTLE bit slower).
You can see Backgrounder is backgrounding some apps (Mail, Phone, iPod). The wheel with the folders on it is called "PogoPlank", $1.99 in the Cydia Store. It turns the usual pages of apps into their own folder where you can easy sort and view your apps.
It's great. I would never have bought my iPhone 3G if it weren't for jailbreaking. I cannot live with the default... anything!
Word of advice: Don't use Rock. Rock is horrible compared to Cydia. Cydia has been around way longer, too.

I like poof, which allows you to hide icons, I went from 4 pages of apps to 1, i just use searchlight to find apps that aren't on the home screen.
Winterboard to change themes (make your icons pretty also the wallE notepad is nice :)
cycorder and qik - if you don't have a 3gs either will allow you to record video on your iphone 2g or 3g

That looks amazing! You know it's funny. I used to be a dedicated Cydia user and gave Rock another chance for this tutorial. It's stabilized immensely since I last used it. What issues have you run across?

Here's the ones that I have installed in Cydia. If you have Rock installed, I would remove it.
afc2add - let's you access your device's filesystem through USB (instead of SSH) with DiskAid (Paid, Wndows+OS X), or Total Commander (Windows, Free). This is free.
AT&T Carrier Logo - Changes the default "AT&T" carrier text with a nice looking logo (see my screenshot).
Backgrounder - 'minimize' apps. This is free.
BossPaper - Customize your wallpaper, and add transitions with specified intervals. I use BossPaper over Winterboard for my wallpapers as it barely uses any memory at any given time and doesn't slow anything down. This is free.
Cycorder - Record videos on a 2G or 3G iPhone. Videos are in /var/mobile/Media/Videos. This is free.
Five Icon Dock - Let's you add a fifth icon to your dock. Just drag an icon to your dock like you would when you're moving icons around. This is free.
Five-Column SpringBoard - Let's you add a fifth column to your SpringBoard. This is free.
FiveIRows - Let's you add a fifth row to your SpringBoard. This is free.
GV Mobile - Make calls, text messages, listen to voicemail, etc, with your Google Voice account. This is free.
iPod Widget - Adds a iPod play/pause button to SBSettings. This is free.
Kirikae - An addon for Backgrounder that let's you background and view a list of currently backgrounded apps so you can easily switch between them without them closing (unless your device runs out of memory). This is free.
LockInfo - This adds a nice information screen to your lockscreen, such as email, missed phone calls, tweets, etc. This is $5 with a 14-day trial.
MobileTerminal - A terminal/command prompt for your iPhone/iPod Touch. This is free.
PogoPlank - Replaces the normal page & icon style of your SpringBoard with this wheel with different folders for your apps. This is $1.99.
Qik - Record and/or stream live video+audio from your iPhone 2G, 3G, or 3GS. You can also upload to YouTube and other places. This is free.
qTweeter - Update your Twitter of Facebook status from any app (that has the statusbar in portrait mode). Very nice modification. Just drag down from your statusbar and qTweeter will drop down. This is $2 I think...
QuickReply for SMS - If you get a SMS when you're in the middle of something, like a game, and you don't want to quit it or background it, you can reply to a SMS without ever leaving it. This is $2 I think...
SBSettings - Adds a nice panel of toggles for your iPhone, as well as some other things, such as starting/stopping music, or turning 3G on or off. This is free.
ScreenSplittr - Let's you view your iPhone or iPod Touch's screen on your TV or on your computer. This uses VNC, so it will be very choppy. It's also backgrounded, so it's even more choppy. This is free (I never use this).
StatusNotifier - Add's status icons to your statusbar for things like unread email, unread text, missed calls, etc. This is free.
Veency - A VNC server for your device. Let's you view and control it (including the keyboard) on your computer or some sort of VNC client. This is free.
Wiimote OpenGL-ES Demo - Let's you connect your Wiimote to your iPhone or iPod Touch via bluetooth so you can use accelerometer data to move a 3D Wiimote. This is free.
20 Second Lock Screen - Instead of the usual 5 or so seconds before your lockscreen turns off, this changes that to 20 seconds. This is free.I like poof, which allows you to hide icons, I went from 4 pages of apps to 1, i just use searchlight to find apps that aren't on the home screen.
Winterboard to change themes (make your icons pretty also the wallE notepad is nice :)
cycorder and qik - if you don't have a 3gs either will allow you to record video on your iphone 2g or 3g
I use SBSettings to hide any icons. Then, I can add it to the "Dock" in SBSettings, so if I hand my iPhone to someone, they can't find that certain app (unless they already know about SBSettings' dock feature. I've never use Spotlight in my life. Since I use PogoPlank. I don't need to hide my icons with anything or use Spotlight.
I don't use Winterboard anymore. I changed a lot of the images manually so I don't need to use Winterboard, which slows things down by just being installed.
Cycorder and Qik are both amazing :D.
That looks amazing! You know it's funny. I used to be a dedicated Cydia user and gave Rock another chance for this tutorial. It's stabilized immensely since I last used it. What issues have you run across?
It just doesn't seem as straightforward to use as Cydia is. Doesn't seem to support queuing things either which can become annoying after a while.

does black rain work on a iphone 3gs running the latest firmware? I though the jailbreak community hadn't found a way to jailbreak the phone yet?
Also will jailbreaking make my iphone 3GS slower?

Please, change your iPhone password after jailbracking it, OpenSSH gets automatically installed by default and is running all the time - if it isn't tunred off with SBSettings for instance. Do not under any circumstances keep the default "alpine" password. Otherwise people have full access to your iPhone over your phone's network.
here's the Lifehacker link on how to change your root password:

Rev3, could you please update the video, this is really dangerous.

The person who did the hack was in Australia and only did it to the carrier there. If you disable the SSH daemon or at least change the password, then you're fine.

Yes, the 3GS is jailbroken and unlocked on the latest firmware. No, it won't make your device slower. It won't make any device slower. It all depends on what you put on there. The 3GS and the new iPod Touch 3G should be fine no matter what you try and do to it.

Is it factory unlocked or was it unlocked by some dude in a retarded phone flash store? Either way, you can jailbreak and unlock and iPhone running the latest firmware.

Is there a App or a way to change up some of the sounds after jail breaking, like Blackberry's have for everything. SMS, Mail etc.
You can use Winterboard for that. Use Cydia to find whatever sounds you want. For example: most of the sounds on mine sound like a Nintendo Wii (lock, unlock, new email, etc). My new email sound is the old AOL "You've Got Mail" thing, and my new text message sound is the Nextel push-to-talk sound. If you want to get down and dirty, all the sounds are in /System/Library/Audio/UISounds as a .caf.

It is nice, but it's ad-supported, which is lame. I'd rather pay a couple of bucks to have those removed. I also don't like waiting for the 'folder' to open. I would much rather use PogoPlank (see my screenshot on page 2).

I'm just a lurker but when I viewed the latest episode I had to signup and comment. The video at 5:03... Icy is an installer app and snow is an unlocker. Icy is from the RipDev Team. While snow came out just recently because of a certain buzz in the scene lately about a $10,000 reward for anyone who can unlock the new baseband. Geohot did not take the money of course. Just had to mention it and Kudos to your work. Respect!

I have seen Steve "The Woz" Wozniak allegedl;y jailbreak a phone on national tv. Could not be that evil. Personally I would not own a product that will not let you modify it. I can understand why they do it, but I think phone companies are too big for their britches also. As the android phone becomes more popular, I wonder how the sales of the iphone will fair.. Most telecoms I think are abandoning the iphone. at least to some extent. There needs to be a secure alternative os for the iphone.

You wont lose your unlock, but updating to apples new official firmware releases will remove your jailbreak. Never update your phone when apple releases their new firmwares.

Can I still add music from my itunes after jailbreaking?
Just wondering if I had to restore the iPhone to old system each time to update my music/videos then re jailbreak it or if I could just add new songs/playlist etc.
Any help would be welcomed.

You sure can. You won't even be able to tell your phone is jailbroken when the process is done until you start installing new apps.
In the episode you say I need to, prior to jailbreaking, back up the phone (presumably with iTunes) and save it in case I need Apple's help (or change my mind). My iPhone backups up to iTunes every time I plug it in. I presume it will be backed up to iTunes after I jailbreak it. How do I save the pre-jailbroken backup so that I can restore it later if necessary? I'm on a SL Mac, if that makes a difference.

You'll always be able to choose which backup you want to restore from.

IntelliScreen sucks. QuickWidgets is much better, completely free, and more powerful.

All you have to do is restore with iTunes.

I have seen a some conflicting posts here regarding SSH. Is SSH installed automatically when you use Blackra1n to jailbreak your iPhone? Or is SSH something that must be installed manually? I opened Terminal on my Mac and tried to SSH into my iPhone but it kept saying the connection was refused and never prompted me for a password. Am I safe?
Can someone recommend a good app that would allow me to download any file type to a specific directory on my iPhone? I also want to be able to use other apps to browse that directory and use those files (for example, a web form in Mobile Safari that allows you to browse for files and specify them for upload).
Thanks!

You have to install "OpenSSH" in Cydia. I recommend installing SBSettings so that you can turn SSH on or off.
Install Safari Download Manager so you can download files. Then install iFile so you can browse the file system. It's impossible to upload files using Safari. It's just the way the app works.

Go back to the more menu and leave the switch on, then use the actual SBSettings slide down menu to toggle it on or off so you don't have to respring every time to change a setting.
I think there's Safari Download Manager and Safari DL plugin.

I tried to turn the toggle on but it won't show up in the slide down menu (even after a respring and phone reboot). As long as it is always off, I am good with that. I really don't have a need for SSH, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't on by default.

I read threw the thread maybe I missed it. I would like some clarification about after I run blackra1n. Is the phone completely reset? Are the apps I had prior to running blackra1n still installed or does the phone only have the default apps install like the day I bought it?
I am really worried about the loss of data from apps I have installed now.

After you jailbreak, your iphone will be EXACTLY as it was before, all apps, settings and data in place. This only difference is, you'll have two new apps that you downloaded using blackra1n - Cydia and Rock, both of which are simply additional "app stores" for unapproved apps. Going into these is similar to going into the app store today. It's where you download all the "jailbroken" apps you read about.
Of course, to be safe, simply backup your iphone using itunes before you do this. That way, in the one in a million chance that something goes wrong during your jailbreak, you can restore to the exact state you had before the JB. You can also revert to your previous state at anytime using that restore point. It couldn't be simpler or quicker. You visit a website, you click a button, your phone reboots and you're jailbroken in 10 seconds! It's seriously that simple now.
Then grab:
SBSettings - TONS of settings available anytime from any app by swiping across your status bar. Incredibly useful
LockInfo - Hands down my favorite reason for jailbreaking! A new customizable lock screen. Instead of the boring date and clock, your lockscreen actually becomes useful! Plugins for adding weather (current & 5 day forecast), voicemail, SMS, mail, calendar events, twitter feeds, todo lists, even ALL your push notifications in a handy expandable list! Absolutely invaluable. If this isn't in iPhone OS4.0, apple is insane.
Backgrounder - for true multitasking
ProSwitcher - piggybacks backgrounder and gives you a Palm Pre-like "cards" view of your running apps- VERY slick!
QuickScroll 2 - lets you quickly scroll anywhere fast. To the bottom of a long webpage or pdf doc, instantly to page 8 of your springboard, etc. Just like grabbing your scrollbar with your mouse on a PC.
Winterboard - just for appearances, this is the framework that lets you download and apply 1000s of themes
5 Icon Dock - Come on, who DOESN'T want an extra app in the doc? :)
QuickReply - This adds a "reply" button to the Close & View SMS Popup. You can reply back to an incoming SMS without ever leaving the app you're currently using.
That's just Day 1 of jailbreaking goodness. After that, go nuts. I guarantee you, you will feel like you have a new toy all over again after Day 1.

So figured that since you all are beginners to the skinning community, I'll give a few headers. First off, stuff like what the picture shows are done in POGOPLANK so stop asking. Second, check out ipodtouchfans.com and their forums for useful info on jailbreaking stuff. They have forums dedicated to skinning your iDevice to its heart-content.

Have fun! I recommend for Mac Users to use Cyberduck: http://cyberduck.ch/ (The best and easiest SSH/SHTP/FTP client I've used.

Wondering if anyone can provide info or site link on what is needed to use my iPod Touch (1st Gen) running the latest 3.x OS, to be converted for use with a voip service provider.
Google search brings up really old & conflicting info on peripherals needed to be purchased as well as which programs to install.
Thanks for any info in advance. I am on Verizon so no iPhone and I travel all over the world (airline) so this would be a great help while on the road.
