If these are supposed to be songs that define the 90's, then I submit the following:

Fiona Apple - Criminal
Jewel - You Were Meant for Me
Melissa Etheridge - 2001/Angels would Fall/Yes I Am
Shawn Colvin - Sunny Came Home
Anything from Meatloaf's "Bat out of Hell II"

With the exception of Meatloaf, all those songs were everywhere in the 90's... two of the Melissa Etheridge songs were used in "Charmed" episodes, and you couldn't get away from the Jewel track if you tried.

The video for Fiona Apple's "Criminal" was the beginning of the death of "heroin chic".

Alice in Chains-Heaven Beside You

I can't think of anymore that aren't already on the list.

I cannot BELIEVE you don't have Smashing Pumpkins up there!!!! And some of your artists don't have songs next to them, is that because you can't remember the name?

That other song by Prodigy is called Breathe

You also need NKOTB - Right Stuff

satori
10-02-2006, 03:59 PM
yeah, smashing pumpkins was probably an oversight, they were pretty important.
I would of added:
L7
Beastie Boys
Stereo MCs - Connected is just one of those songs
Pop Will Eat Itself - Ich Bin Ein Auslander - most of their stuff is from the late 80s, but this is the track that made them huge in North America.
Jane's Addiction
Hole - I am no fan of hole, but it's hard to leave that Heroin-ruined suicide helping demon out of a serious list of the 90s

.... I have to go in to a meeting, I'll edit this later.

Reel Big Fish - Sell Out

Is that on the list? Is there any Green Day? Or at the tail end: Blink 182

Gotta have Rammstein - Du Hast Meich

I agree with jonathanlondon, you need to have Reel Big Fish on there. Other than that, I don't see anything you really missed. Oh man I just thought of one. What about Baha Men - Who Let the Dogs Out? That song exploded in the 90s (right?). I got so sick of that damn song though. I actually screamed, in my middle school, I LET THE DOGS OUT DAMNIT! NOW SHUT THE HELL UP! Didn't get in trouble because I was saying what all the teachers were thinking.

Edit:
Crap just looked it up and that song came out in 2000. Oh well I was close.

The other Prodigy song you are most likly thinking of is Breath.

OK, some of those bands listed are more associated with the late 80's more so than the 90's while their albums may have been put out in say 90 or 91.
Example NWA I think late 80's Dr. Dre and Ice Cube's influential solo careers I think 90's

This list is very late and early 90's-centric and is missing alot of the prime years of 90's music 1992-1995.

Also, this seems to be a sheer pop list and almost utterly leaves out one of the most signifigant musical movements of the last 30 years, the alternative music revolution. The lack of Grunge is offensive.

Metallica's One was released on the 1988 album ...and Justice for All. While any song's from their break through 1991's Self-titled or affectionaly refered to "The Black Album" is completely left out. While I perfer anything on ...and Justice for All to the Black Album, I associate that with late 80's while the black album is 90's all the way. Load and ReLoad is just shit and should never be on anyone's list of anything other than shit.

Weird Al was just being mentioned without specific song titles, but a large bulk of his fame was aquired in the 80's his more commercial success was in the 90's mind you. But without a doubt "Weird Al in 3-D" and "Dare to be Stupid" are hallmarks of the 80's.
Istanbul-Constantinople? How can you claim to be a Geek and not know the song is Istanbul (not Constantinople) by They Might be Giants. Of course the song was on "Flood" recorded in 1989, but the album was out in 1990, so I guess it's kind of 90's. Of course the sogn was on Tiny Toons and that's where I first heard it and nothing is more 90's than Tiny Toons.

Anyways.

My Suggestions:

Nirvana - (in addition to Smells like Teen Spirit) Come as you Are, Lithium, In Bloom, Rape Me, About a Girl, and Heart-Shaped Box.

Alice in Chains - Man in the Box, Would, and Down in a Hole

Soundgarden - Outshined, Rusty Cage, Black Hold Sun, Spoonman, and Blow Up the Outside World.

Smashing Pumpkins - Today, Disarm, 1979, Zero, and Tonight, Tonight

Sonic Youth - 100%

Pearl Jam - Alive, Evenflow, Jeremy, and Don't Call me Daughter.

The Offspring - Come out and Play, Self-esteem, and Pretty Fly (for a White Guy).

White Zombie - Thunderkiss 65, Supercharger Heaven, as well as More Human than and Human.

Nine Inch Nails - Wish, Closer, Hurt, and March of Pigs. (The fragile was put out in 1999, but the 90's are over by that point really)

Pantera - Walk, Great Southern Trewndkill, and I'm Broken.

Maryilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams, Cake and Sodomy, Dope Hat, and The Beautiful People.

Rage Against the Machine - Freedom, Bulls on Parade, and People of the Sun.

Metallica - Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam, Unforgiven, and Nothing Else Matters

Weezer - Undone (the Sweater Song), Buddy Holly, and Say it ain't So.

Weird Al Yankovic - Amish Paradise, Smells Like Nirvana, and Bedrock Anthem.

Ok I need to take a break, I can list more later.

PUBLIC ENEMY!!!

Corrections:

"Bittersweet Symphony" is by The Verve, not The Verve Pipe.

NWA's "Straight Outta Compton" came out in the late 80's, but I think it could slide.

Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" is also late 80's, but since hip-hop was most excellent in the early 90's, this can also slide.

"Institutionalized" by Suicidal Tendencies came out in 83. It was played a lot in the 90's, so maybe that's what you're going for rather than music that actually came out in the 90s -- which is better, in my opinion.

"Blister in the sun" came out in 81.

-

I agree with the others: grunge should definitely be represented, as well as:

Smashing Pumpkins: can't forget Cherub Rock and Disarm!
and The Cure, Morrissey, PJ Harvey, Lemonheads, Camper Van Beethoven, Porno for Pyros, Foo Fighters, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Pavement, Pixies, Primus, Rocket from the Crypt, A Tribe Called Quest, Sparklehorse, Cypress Hill, Suzanne Vega.

Way more R.E.M., Radiohead, Blur, and the entire Crow soundtrack.

Just a thought. Since many bands from the 80s (Janes addiction [nothings shocking is from 88], Pixies, husker du to name a few) were a huge influence on 90s rock and have that "90s sound", i think its alright if we include them. Just for rock though, only becuase besides 90 and 91....the 90s was all gangsta and ot oldschooleastcoast hiphop. I could be wrong, not that big of a hiphop fan, so i dont know much =\

I forgot about Fishbone.
Hell where's Primus? Blah.
I can spend a full week making a 90's playlist.

As for the Chemical Brothers, only Exit Planet Dust and Dig your Own Hole are their only 90's albums. Hell, the entire dig your Own Hole Album can be added to the list.

Additions to my list:

Primus - Jerry was a Race Car Driver, Mr. Krinkle, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver, and the Antipop.

(The) Prodigy - Out of Space, Walls of Jerico, Firestarter, Breath, and the song already listed.

I can think of music videos and stuff, but i can't remember like lyrics to look up the songs on google. Like this one song in the music video they were in like a new york loft or a green house, and I want to say like the word dog was either in the name of the band or the name of the song.

Gorillaz is 2001, alot of the songs you guys are mentioning are just like superdeformed said, either late 80's or early 00's. I think BrianGilmore was looking to just grab one song from each artist to represent them to try and keep it smaller yet still have a huge scope. And some of those songs, just because you aboslutley love them, like My Bloody Valentine, I wouldn't neccessarily believe needs to be on there. He's looking for 90's hits, not just cool music that happened to be released in teh 90's or else the playlist would never end. The keyword here is mainstream I do believe, like aaron carter - that's how i beat Shaq. Still backing that one to be the first on the list.
