Is this possible or do I first need to upgrade to 2.71? If so, can someone point me to the 2.71 downgrader?

Upgrade to 2.71 first, then downgrade to 1.5, then install the custom firmware (3.02OE/3.03OE/3.03OE-A/3.03OE-B).
Just did it earlier this week using a tutorial I found here (http://www.pspiso.com/index.php?topic=7615.0). You have to register first, but it's free and easily the best tutorial I've seen on this subject.
