Is there a next generation resolution for HDTV? I could have sworn I saw something about 2560x1440 being the next generation resolution(and not too far off), but all my searches have come up empty on it. I did find something ridiculous for next gen resolution like 4000 or 5000 pixels, but that was supposed to be like 10 years from now. Anyone heard of this or is my old age getting to me and I'm imagining it?

Google "super hi-vision", its a new format proposed by NHK of japan: a company, I believe, that had a hand in creation of the original hdtv standard. This format would have an astounding resolution of 7680 x 4320.

We can't transmit uncompressed SMPTE 292M and you want a higher resolution signal?

Not sure if the system mentioned by crunnells is for home use or perhaps for distribution to movie theaters?

NHK has played with many different technologies in the past. Not sure how long Japan can continue to support NHK's dreams, due to financial issues in Japan. Remember, NHK is a public Broadcasting operation, it's budget is from a license fee payed by TV set owners. There is no penalty if you do not pay the fee. If enough don't pay, NHK's budget has to be cut.

We can't transmit uncompressed SMPTE 292M and you want a higher resolution signal? You said a magic word there - "transmit", and I agree on that point based on current, widely deployed, technology.

BUT you forget that we also have BR type media that is uncompressed and gives a superb picture, and fiber to the home is becoming a reality in more markets which greatly increases available bandwidth.

Cable, satellite, and OTA broadcast signals aren't oing to cut it (yet), but those aren't the only delivery mechanism available to us.

Having said that, there will be a format war, standards are not set in stone. Looking beyond HDTV is not worthwhile at this point for anything more than curiosity value.

How many would pay for higher resolution?

Bandwidth caps would have to be revised. The one test needed 4TB of storage for 20 minutes of content.

I just want someone to explain how their life is better because of HD TV? Does it help your health? Improve your financial stability? Does your spouse love you more? It is just a diversion.

It adds something more exiting to your spare time.

1. Its already hard enough to see the difference between 720p and 1080p with screen sizes people actually want to have in their home. How big would the screen have to be for anybody to get any benefit from all the extra resolution?

2. It took the FCC and all the broadcasters 10 plus years to actually implement the new 720 and 1080 standards after having the old ones for decades. There are not going to be any more changes for a long time.

3. 7680 x 4320? That's 16 times the pixel information of 1080p content. I bet cable companies are going to love that.
