This was something I was really hoping for. Now I don't know how long I have to wait to get my macbook. I was kinda hoping they were going to release it early.

And is there something wrong with getting the Macbook now, and just upgrading the OS later? Leopard is an incremental release, not a major jump - and shouldn't require more hardware than is currently being offered. Sure its got some nice additional features, but big deal ... you'll be in other apps far more often, and when Leopard comes out (in Spring 07) it will be a bonus.

Since there weren't any new Macs announced today, it is probably a good time to buy.

Yeah, but I have to spend the extra money to upgrade is the thing, and going into university next year I am going to need all the extra money you can get.
I do have a question though, if I buy a upgrade copy of leopard, can I install it on 2 systems. Because me and my girlfriend are both getting macbooks so if we split the cost I won't mind.

I'm surprised about this. I was also looking forward to Leopard being released soon. Then again, is it possible they're waiting for a Vista release date(if it hasn't been, I haven't being paying attention anymore)?

Easy to upgrade, but an extra $130 you have to drop to get the new OS. It just makes sense to wait and get it already installed and completely free. Unfortunately waiting isn't always an option, but neither is upgrading so it's certainly a turn-off for someone who isn't sold on Macs yet.

Well waiting is an option for me, I have just never owned a Mac or a notebook so I am kind of excited to get it. Can you use a copy of OSX for 2 computers though?

Buying one copy gets you a single user license. However at least with other releases of Mac OS's Apple made it reasonably priced to stay legal.

With Tiger the single user license was $129 and the 5 user $199. Not too much of a jump.

If you buy your macbook before Leopard comes out look for rebates when you buy Leopard. When I upgraded to Tiger I was able to find a $50 rebate.

you're going to use it for your stay at the university.

Then what's wrong with buying it on the first day of school?

If I were you I'd wait. Then you don't have to buy one now then Leopard later.

If you need a laptop now, buy it now. If you don't need one until school starts, then wait until then, not to mention you'll be able to use the sweet student discount.

I never owned a mac computer (well we had 1 family one like 10 years ago), and my next PC will be either a macbook or macbook pro. I'm just waiting for Leopard to be on these laptops, and then I'll get it.

I currently own a dying eMachines M6805 laptop, and an almost 4yr old Athlon XP 2000+ desktop.

Exactly, it really comes down to when you need it, If you need it now get it now, if you don't need it then don't get it and wait for Leopard.

Well I don't need it until the end of summer, but I want it now. I guess I'll wait a while, but I am not waiting that long. Probably right after they release leopard.

In that case then defiantly wait.

That'd only work though if someone had a spare validation code.

leopard is due in spring, so wait. spring can run as late as June 21st, however.

iWork '07 and iLife '07 will probably be released at the same time as Leopard, and a new Macbook will have all of those, saving you a nice chunk of change on upgrades.

of course there's always bittorrent.

Yeah I suppose I will hold out until leopard. I just really want to get a macbook and have a laptop. Anyone think the macbook itself will have any upgrades by leopard?

Seeing how they didn't announce anything about any changes, I would say no. They've got enough on their plate to deliver. I would assume they would update the Macbook Pro before the update the regular Macbook. So if there isn't an update to the pro before Leopard is released, I would say no. But then again there's always the chance of having an upgraded version released.
