problem with polygonal lasso tool

I'm having a problem with the polygonal lasso tool. I'm trying to make a 45 degree rectangle (which I've done, with the pen tool, or could have done by rotating a simple rectangle.) But when using the polygonal lasso tool (holding shift for 45 degree angles), after closing the polygon, I get a weird shape, I included a pic below. I checked the tool presents and am not sure how to solve this, or why there is a problem. I'm using CS4.

i have the EXACT same selection problem...have either of you discovered a solution?!?

i think i have found the problem, make sure your color mode is not on Bitmap, when creating a new document. I'm not sure if that was the problem, but i do know the magic wand doesn't work in that mode.
