Can Bioshock 2 live up to the original? Will From Paris With Love be our Valentine? The third annual Oscar wager! We finally talk Mass Effect 2! And what about that OTHER Avatar movie?

Watch/Download (http://revision3.com/trs/12kinds)

Excited for the Oscar wager! Does anyone want to do a collaborative TRS forum Oscar wager list like last year?

Also, due to popular demand, it looks like they do in fact talk about ME2! Will see if it's a formal review or something different due to the ads.

My wishes have come true! They got my letters! Well, I didn't send any letters, but I must thank everyone who apparently did! YES they talk about Mass Effect 2 and it was GREAT! I'm so happy and completely satisfied that I didn't have to miss out on one of my favorite games on my favorite podcast! Just utterly thrilled. I could go on and on but I think you get my point. THANK YOU GUYS!!!

I'm excited to see how the Oscar wager winner is, lots of cool predictions and I love the logic behind the choices.

The last thing I want to mention is about the Air Bender trailer. I'm glad to hear you guys think it looks really cool, but to be honest, I'm really not sure what to think about it. I think I'm just way too worried that something will fall apart by the time I watch the movie and if I get any hopes up they'll just be dashed away. It's like my mind won't let me admit that it's cool. I mean, I see the fire, and it looks like real fire and it's snaking around in the air... but what if that doesn't look good on the big screen? What if the effects are too "CG" when seen in the cinema. I'm definitely a little worried, and it's just because I LOOOOVED the cartoon so much. But I definitely want it to be good. It's been a long time, and I'm ready to come back to this world.

Honestly, this is the Avatar I have been waiting for. After seeing the trailer during the Superbowl (so happy the Saints won) I squealed. Though I don't know too much about the actors playing the main roles, the supporting cast I adore. And honestly, I never thought Shyamalan was neccessarily a bad director, he just was a really bad writer who was too obsessed with his writing. With this movie, his biggest flaw has been removed.

That said, I am in a bit of a pickle. We love the show. We tell everyone they need to watch Avatar. The problem is now with the movie coming out I almost feel like I should stop and tell them to first see the movie.

I do this with books, since so rarely do movies live up to what a book can do, but I am not sure how to handle this. I don't tell people to see Serenity before they watch Firefly, but there it was a continuation of the story, so watching the show first makes the movie even better. But here, its the origin story. It feels more like a book scenario.

What do you guys recommend?

From Russia!

@Jeff: Did you play Knights of the Old Republic 2? The opening of the game was very "grey" as to which ending you picked in KOTOR 1. If you saved the galaxy or let Sith take cover, the galaxy was still in ruins and had to be rebuilt.

KOTOR 2 itself was a very "grey" game in terms of dialogue choices, and situations, which I love compared to the good/evil straightforward nature of the Mass Effect games.

Looking forward to beating all of their oscar picks again, but I admit I do have Inglourious Basterds winning it all (because it's clearly the best movie released that year).

Worst intro eeeveerr, just plain silly.

please...please let's not take this show down several noches by even mentioning the greasy, filth ridden sorry for an excuse show, jersey shore. I mean really how low can MTV sink. There is nothing redeeming about any of them.

I am glad they did BS 2 and ME 2 though.

First of all thanks go to Dan's wonderfully rad lady-friend for introducing us all to Avatar. I never would have sought this out had it not been for all three of your recommendations and glowing comments. It rocks.

...
What do you guys recommend?

This is a dilemma the answer to which rests in the quality of the movie. I am still VERY cautiously optimistic, but even if the movie(s) is great it will most likely take away from the enjoyment of the TV series while the reverse is less likely to be true.

I can't imagine the movie being more enjoyable than seeing the TV series sans preconceived stuffs. Tell them to rent the DVDs and get ready to smile.

Dan's gf introduced me to Avatar. Jeff's gf introduced me to The Ting Tings. And I'd buy an album of Alex's gf doing that german song ( Rammstein ? ) that she was singing in Rockband during the 24hr gamingthon.

At least it's not the other way around.

Def tell ppl to watch the show first. They'll get more out of the movie. There will be hundreds of things in the movie that won't be fully explained that are explained in the show.

"Du Hast" by Rammstein... honestly, probably their most popular song state-side, even though it's one of their very basic and, IMO, boring songs.

but yea, I'd love for them to have a more round-table type show. Like Co-Op did with their Reflections 2009 episodes.

You must be right about the popularity, seeing as I've never listened to them on purpose and had a good idea what it was. I do have a KMFDM ( kylie minogue fans don't masturbate - kill mother fucking depeche mode, take your pick ) remix of theirs though, I guess that kinda counts.

EDIT: Damn - just remembered I also have a Rammstein remix by NIN and a White Zombie remix by Rammstein. I have heard them before I guess.

RE-EDIT: Heather made them sound brilliant.

Wow Jeff really? You think Avatar deserves an Oscar for best picture? It was a pretty movie and all but just because it had really expensive and fancy special effects that does not mean its worthy of an Oscar especially when the story wasn't really anything new or spectacular.

I just heard a girl at a bar say, "...Best Picture? Nice special fx but shit story. If I want to see those kind of special fx and that kind of story, I'll play my playstation".

I immediately approached her. She was an Italian tourist, and kept calling me sir.

Remember these are predictions, not their votes. On the raddies Jeff rated Avatar #2. If you want to debate that, it has been discussed ad nauseum in the Avatar thread.

I loved this episode for its game reviews. You guys hit the nail on the head for Mass Effect 2. I was literally sitting there talking to my TV agreeing with Dan about ME2! I do the window thing and talk to EVERY SINGLE PERSON! The game is just that compelling! I'm heading into my second play-through and I feel I could do a third right after finishing it again!

Now to me Bioshock 1 was an amazing game! I really loved it and the story was beautifully crafted. But Bioshock 2 just felt to Bioshock 1.5 or a add-on to me... I guess sitting down and really thinking about what I just played and the traps etc. I was criticizing the game to hard. There is definitely a lot of revisions of the original that make this game BETTER. I still don't know if its a #2 worthy... but the improvements were there!

The Oscar has never been about what should win. Avatar will get best picture becuase it makes more that 2 Billion. The Oscar is about what movie is best for the movies business...and Avatar delivered. James Cameron's last picture scored best picture despite the fact it had a story so predictable, it was based on a famous historic event and characters so insipid that you wanted to strangle them by the end of the film...not to mention a pop-tune by Celine Dion. Stop pretending that Oscar is some endorsement of quality. Avatar's gonna spank the other movies.

I don't know where you are getting this. Out of the last ten best picture winners, only four of them had even made $100k before they got nominated. Of the ten, only Return of the King could really be considered a big blockbuster. All of the complaints about best picture lately have been about how it's always about small movies the general public has never heard about.

Just started Bioshock 2 this morning. While it's true that the mystery of the world is gone, it's such a great place to be in that it didn't matter, and I'm just happy to be lumbering around terrified inside of it.

Re: Bioshock 2

It makes sense the creepy mystery is gone...we've been there before for a full game, I can't really see something completely new and different if it is set in Rapture, 10 years later.

More 'action' oriented makes sense, too, as you're now playing a Big Daddy instead of what'shisname. And I sympathize with Alex and the harvesting...I hate 'defend this point' gameplay, which is what being a good daddy will get you.

Re: Mass Effect 2

The more I play it, the less I like it. It feels like they took the story and conversations from the first one and stuck them into a complete different game, reskinned to look like Mass Effect.

Same here. In fact, the kid use to watch me play and at the time he couldn't watch even PG13 Vampire or Zombie movies without nightmares.

We just never found it scary. Creepy, yes, but not scary.

During the Oscar Wager section I was convinced that once they moved off the "major awards" I heard music fading in - I thought that the guys were going to be "played off" in Oscar style and told to hurry things up. (this is around 24:45)

I see (hear?) now that there was a soft track playing behind them the whole time but it was basically just was ambient snare drum of some kind and it did kind of "kick in" at this point. I guess I thought this would have been funny.

I am glad Bioshock 2 isn't a bust - I still need to finish the first - (I do like it, but I just got distracted by the Steam Holiday Sale). This may work well on the consoles, but on the PC I found the weapon switching mechanic to be clumsy having to switch back and forth from weapon to plasmid I could rarely find the attack I wanted without looking at the HUD. I definitely need to finish it was it really is a unique experience.

People said the same thing about Dead Space, Ju-on, and even Resident Evil 4...

Something I've learned is tolerance varies from person to person, and apparently I have a high one when it comes to games. I imagine once games start looking more realistic, and developers realize that less is sometimes more, that could change.

I don't go near horror movies, though. Maybe I'd be fine nowadays, but I don't wanna find out.

I'll second that, although I was turned onto Sharkwater which I found to be more shocking. Mass Effect 2 - will it ever be ported to PC or will I never get to play it? I'm not buying an entire system for one game. Also, I'm really behind on my movies - just started Inglorious Basterds the other night after the nephew fell asleep and wasn't getting into it at all, in fact I was turned off of it . . . until I got to the movie theater part. The scene at the table with the strudel was amazing. I hope there's more of that to come.

Should have said this earlier (I never watch new shows until the weekend at the earliest) but good on you for saying some words about Mass Effect 2. Can't speak for anybody else but I think it was the right decision. And I promise to beat up anybody who calls you guys biased (who is also smaller than me).

Also, agree with Dan. Within 5 hours of playing, it was my third favorite video game of all time (after Fallout 3 and Half-Life 2). I don't think it will knock off Fallout but Half-Life 2 is sleeping with its night-light on.

Forgot to say - here's my thing about Avatar. The powers in the trailer look okay, but Avatar is not about powers.

It's about a little boy who literally has the weight of the world on his shoulders; a little boy who blames himself for the deaths of tens of thousands of people and 100 years of suffering. I get none of that from the trailer.

I also get no sense of the show's humor. I'm afraid I still see very bad things (dead people?) for this movie. It's great that the lead can apparently twirl a staff, but if he can't tell a joke or move me in any of the story's serious moments, this movie's going to absolutely suck unbelievable ball sack.
