I'd be curious to know what you thought of the unit. I having been keeping my eyes open for one since the UMPC/Origami release ... and the R1 looked to be the best deal technology wise.

Token - I was going to post the exact same phrase about not wanting kids, either that or giving up his first born...
Yeah I was wondering about it myself, I haven't even talked to anyone who has played with Vista, one of the guys at work is obsessed with it cause he saw it as a conference, but I really want to know if it's going to be worth upgrading for awhile...

It deff looked like a nice machine. However, the Vista logo on the back...was that a sticker or did it light up?

ASUS makes an exelect notebook. In fact, very few know that nearly all notebooks are made from one of 4 major notebook manufactures, all of which are in Taiwan. Even names like dell buy from one of the 4 (most of theirs are Compal's and Celvo's).
Asus
Clevo
Acer
Compal
It's pretty interesting. So anyways, ASUS makes the MacBook and MacBook Pro for Apple. It's a good way to save money by buying off brand, given that they are all the same thing and all.
::Side note:: I have an ASUS z96j and love it. Here is a pic... http://www.axisds.com/BlogPictures/DiggNation/images/Me%2C%20Kevin%20Rose%2C%20and%20Alex%20Albrecht.jp g

It's a good way to save money by buying off brand, given that they are all the same thing and all. They are manufactured in the same facilities, but do not necessarily use parts from the same component bins. Many of the high end brands use higher spec memory and CPUs (not all CPUs are created equally).
What those companies do (and Flextronics is another - but mainy do handheld devices and cellphones) is use their manufacturing capacity to make the machines. They have little to do with the motherboard designs and layouts - those are pretty much unique to each company, because of the features that each company want to use to distinguish themselves.
Now, having said that, you can at least say that the BUILD quality should be the same, since they are manufactured in the same factories, but then again, the reputation of each company is built on its quality, and the quality control they are willing to accept.
Anyone want a batch of Sony manufactured batteries?

Asus builds the Macbooks and Macbook Pros, fine. So their 'quality' should translate to their own products, fine. Let's go by your logic, axisds.
Remember the problems they had? Warping, discolouring, overheating, mooing...
Problems which no other manufacturer has had to such an extent with similarly specced / laid out Core (2) Duo laptops.
Hmmm.
Mind you, I'd say the z96j will probably end up more reliable than a Macbook Pro as it's more conservatively engineered...

ASUS laptops are the best windows laptops out there. I have the W3J, 14 inch, x1600, core 2 2.0, 2 gig ram, 100 gig 7200rpm. No other seller offers that power in a 14 inch. Maybe the x1300, or x200, but not the 16. The selection is tremendous also. Ever go the dell.com or hp and only see one series that kinda has you choice, but not exactly? ASUS laptops will have what you are looking for.

That Asus that Alex had is the coolest looking notebook I have ever seen. I've been leaning towards getting a Mac after Leopard comes out, but I'd prefer to have a Tablet over a Mac. I also want to know whether the Vista logo is just a sticker or part of the machine? The Asus he had was so slim, shiny, and just slick looking that it made Kevin's matte black Macbook look completely dull and boring by comparison. I would really love to know the specs and how much it would cost to get one like that.

It looked to me like it had some backlighting to it. Thus, part of the machine.

i dunno why everyone says it is an asus when in the episode he specifically said it is an acer and it looks nothing like the asus r1f. Is there anyway to contact alex to find out exact what model it was? does anyone know?????

Dave, just so you know, Alex's post above is, indeed, Alex Albrecht. It is an Asus. Why did he say Acer originally? Probably the same reason he was incoherent at times throughout the show: alcohol and a cold.

As an aside - for the post from "Alex" above ...
Only 3 posts has n00b written all over it ...
Until you read that his title say "Show Host".

That plus the fact that you could clearly see it said "ASUS" on the laptop despite the fact that Alex kept saying "Acer" over and over. Pretty funny.
Asus makes the Macbook and it seems like the R1 tablet is pretty much the MacBook plus touch screen. The other cool thing I really like is that you can take the DVD drive out and put in a 2nd battery to give you up to 7 hours of battery life or put in a 2nd hard drive. My one problem is the same problem I have with the Macbook, the integrated graphics. I wonder how well the R1 handles Vista's GUI? That would suck if you have to turn off Aero.

yeh. i just figured that a guy with 3 posts on the forum could not possibly be the real alex! anyways the asus tablet that i keep looking up doesnt really look like the one that he is using. is this model just not up on their website or? Is it possible to get that exact model that alex has. it looks so ****ing sweet!!
does anyone have any SERIOUS tip about which tablet to buy? i am looking at a 2300 budget and i def want around 7 hours of batt life ( so i can get at least 4 hours out of it) and dvd burner.
thanks!

It's not on sale yet people, during the credits when it shows Alex and Kevin turning on their laptops Alex clearly says, "not available for purchase yet."

Ok... so I was just trying to share a bit of info. Let me clear this up. First, all Mac's are designed by Apple flaws and all. Dell's are LARGELY designed by Dell however, many of the big names have been known to cut corners on development and use already designed notebooks. Toshiba is famous for this. The vast majority of Toshiba notebooks are rebadged Asus notebooks like my z96j.
The beauty of my z96j is that it is part of Intel's VBI (verified by Intel) Program. It is basically Intel's push for a notebook design standard, like that which is already in place for desktop pc's. Anywho....

umm ive been looking at that notebook on the asus website and the specs suck but the majour reason aka 40% of why im not buying it is..... care to take a gues???? thats right :P it doesnt have that rounded windows vista logo like what alex has on his hehe, isnt it just amazing of how much of a difference the look of a laptop will do over function?
Asus is really dropping the ball if they don't make this available to the public. The Vista-branded R1 is the first laptop (/tablet) that I've seen that even comes close to competing with Macs in terms of aesthetics. I know I would buy one, and I know plenty of other people that would also want one.

It was offered to excecs and some press but I notice alex no longer has it and I am wondering if Rev 3 also has that no gifts over 25$ rule
Naw, I'm sure Rev3 doesn't have a "no gifts over $25" policy. Alex and Kevin are always having to Ro Sham Bo for the booty, and Kevin is always suspecting Alex of hoarding stuff he doesn't know about in LA.
Regardless, I would happily pay good money for that, but would have to think much longer and harder about getting a regular r1f. Asus needs to get on the ball.
