I've noticed that the receipts for my recent iTunes app purchases have tax on them. I've looked online for the reason for this and all I see is proposed taxes on digital downloads, nothing about them actually being passed. Does anyone else in the state of New York get these charges or know why and when they were put in place.

I've been getting charged sales tax on all of my iTunes purchases for a couple years now. (I don't get charged tax on any of the free downloads of course).

Do other states NOT charge sales tax??

Not all states do charge sales tax. For example, New Hampshire does not. However, New York has a law that requires online venders to charge state sales tax to NYS residents. Most states don't require online venders to do this unless they are shipping to the same state. In these cases, consumers are expected to self-report the purchase and pay the tax themselves.

In California, we're not getting taxed. =\
