Just wondering what is the easiest way to backup a DVD with my macbook i have found seveal options but they all seem cumbersome.
What I want to be able to do it take a dual layer disc and compress it down to fit on a single layer dvd because that is all my macbook will burn. Mac the Ripper will extract the DVD but it is still 7.XX or so gigs and single layers are only 4.7. Also i would like to be able to keep the menu and the different tracks of the dvd.

A lot of that stuff has been taken off the net. Although, I still seem to be able to find DVDshrink. You might try looking at torrent sites.

Use MacTheRipper to rip dvd to hard drive
http://www.mactheripper.org/
Then use DVD2one to reencode a dual layer dvd
http://www.dvd2one.com/
This works great for me, the only problem is that in DVD2one I have to set a custom size for my reencoded dvd, it defaults to 4400 which should fit on a dvd but sometimes it doesnt. So I set a custom size for the reencode of 4300.

Doesn't ffmpegX do that? I'm not sure how it works since I never used it before, but here's the link if you want to check it out:
http://www.ffmpegx.com/
"Compresses a non-encrypted DVD to 4GB without reencoding it."

another great program to use, is Handbrake, or instahandbrake, both are found on the handbrake website, it'll even let you pull out just the movie in a avi file, or even ipod friendly file

is it possible to encode any of my dvd's to .wmv format. and don't give me a hard time about it. the reason is the media center functionality of the 360.

Forget HandBrake.
It's all about MediaFork (http://mediafork.dynalias.com/) now.
Grab Flip4Mac (http://www.flip4mac.com/) for Windows Media encoding (yuck).
