I haven't heard much about this, but I think it's kind of a big deal. At least as a Mac user. I'm always up for more titles coming out for Macs and especially games that are natively made for it, and not just ported.
I'm not writing this thread to start a flaming war about Mac vs. PC, I'm starting it to talk about what it could mean for the future of gaming, especially in terms of the Mac.
I personally have wanted to try a lot of the games the guys talk about on the show, and was very interested to check out Portal 2 and now I get to.
Is anyone else excited for this announcement?

The main issue with this announcement I've seen is Mac people going "YES! Now we get all games on Steam! Suck it PC!" They seem to not realize that the only things coming are Steam, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series. Macs are not getting the vast array of games that are on Steam. Let alone, I think it's a great move on Valve's part. Any time a company gets more potential customers it's a good thing. My only concern is how well the games will run.
oh and it's worth noting, these will be ports. You say "I'm always up for more titles coming out for Macs and especially games that are natively made for it, and not just ported." but that's technically what these are.

Interesting. I realize the current titles will be ports, however, the article did mention that all new Steam games will be developed natively for both systems. Which I think is a really neat thing.
I realize that initially it doesn't mean the largest boost in titles available for Mac's, but I do think this means some great things for the future of gaming on a Mac.
I do understand your concern for how well the games run, and I don't have a ton of experience playing ported games, but, the games I have played I've been fairly happy with. I don't have much concern for the computers themselves. Apple has made some pretty solid strides in improving their hardware for gaming, and hopefully that continues.
So, I, for one, am pretty excited about this.

Ummmm I really don't see very much of a problem here. As a mac user, the MAIN reasons I wanted Steam was to play these games. The others can come later or not at all for all I care.

I am extremely ecited to get some Left4Dead 2 going on my macbook pro. Especially since it will still be grouping with the pc peeps. Color me happy. ALso it's not necessarily mac users being excited JUST for steam. It's more that we are excited that this step was taken because that means mac might be on it's way to being more game friendly. I am so sick of booting up my windows partition to play games.

So you can buy every Mac game digitally? Like all 7 of them! [/snark]
This is a good move. Steamworks games on both platform will allow cross-play and All source games you've bought carry over for free. Now I am not going to switch platforms, anytime soon, since I am an exclusive PC gamer, but its good to know atleast I'll have something to play with if I ever did.

it was more of an issue of some mac users not knowing all the facts and then making dick-ish comments aimed at any windows users.
Personally, I think it's great that Valve is doing this. I have found it odd that they announced that you didn't have to buy a separate version if you already own it and that mac and windows users will be able to play with each other online. Maybe I was one of few who never thought that that wouldn't be the case.

The "buy once across both" applies only to Valve games, BTW. The publisher for the 3 other games hasn't announced anything. :)

If Portal 2 will run at least 30FPS at 1024x768 on my GMA950 MacBook, then sold. Otherwise, I guess I'm waiting for the PS3 port.

Yup, it's April.
This really can't come soon enough for me. I am already starting to drift back towards WoW as I wait for some "new" games for Mac.
Cheers!

What's more amazing is, hopefully this will open the floodgates to have even more developers developing more games for the mac.

I think you're dead right! It gives mac users something they desperately want, an app store.

huh? What 3 other games? The only games said were "Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Portal, and the entire Half-Life series" all of which are Valve games.

Yeah darkness, I didn't really get that one either.
I think it was just another point that not all the games on Steam are going to be ported or necessarily made for Mac. Which, is true.
My guess, is what we all are hoping this means for gaming on the mac in the future, more big titles. That's my hope anyway.

at the very least, it'll definitely make companies already releasing games on Steam consider the market because Steam will be able to provide actual statistics of users playing games on Macs.

Hey, I think this is mega cool and I've no intention of owning a MAC any time soon. My brother (ultimate fanboy) can now play Portal etc. is very cool. Just another reason why Valve is sofa king awesome.
A couple three thoughts:
1) It will be incumbent on MAC peeps who want to see more of this positive attention to buy these games to encourage others to follow suit.
2) I'm surprised that Apple isn't blocking this to keep competing "App stores" out of their walled garden paradise.
3) Could this be one step closer to a native Linux Steam client? Oh please say yes (a nerd can dream).

LOL, I've done that lately. Why must I wait so long?
It's Valve.
A great Co. imo - deliver quality stuff and are generous to their customers/users, but they are NOT known for delivering on-time.

I was being facetious sir. But it was poorly worded, for which I apologize. Hope to kick you in the butt very soon in L4D2! :D
I thought if they got Steam up and running on the MAC it would be more likely it would finally come to Linux. It's all UNIX eh?

Yes. Steam shows all the games I have bought, some can't be installed because they don't work. But Team Fortress isn't even showing up.

I have it on xbox with the extra hard levels which I beat :D is there a reason to get it on PC? I think it's time for another play through of this game because watching the preview video I don't remember any of those levels.
How awesome would it be if when you tried to install the free version you got a message saying, The free portal game is a lie.
Do get it for your PC if you love it as there a plethora of user created maps which can be found around the nets like here: http://www.portalgamemaps.com/

you just made my year with that comment
I hope they have user generated gladios comments. that would be epic. Those comments are why I play the game. screw the puzzles.
It's one of the reasons I fell in love with and remain loyal to PC gaming.
Just got word that Steam should be coming to Linux - next logical step and awesome.

I heard rumors of that... If it does, I'll be checking it out, for sure. There are Steam deals I've heard about that are pretty crazy. Interested in trying it for games that won't come to PS3.
I'll need to buy a new PC to play anything modern, though.

FINALLY! I thought we'd be waiting forever, but it only took a month to get out of beta! That's got to be a ValVe Record! I already own Peggle and Portal so I'm just downloading them now. I also bought torchlight and it's downloading too. Any other good games that will run on mac that I should buy?
