View Full Version : Tech Builder Job
I wasn't sure where I should post this so I gave here a shot.
I am out of a job at the moment, only 18 anyways. I don't really feel like having another retail grocery type store job again. I'd really enjoy like building computer systems all day, or something towards that.
I live in Ottawa, Ontario. I can't seem to find any job postings about that on any site, or heard of any around my area. I was wondering if anyone knew of anything like this in Ottawa, or maybe a better kind of job that deals with tech (obviously nothing big time, I know ya can't just get a job like that lol)
Anything will help.
Thanks.

I don't know how to help you but I myself came up into the tech industry by expressing interest once I got in at a company. I just worked on an assembly line but after a while, I became acquainted with the IT staff and eventually took an internship sort of position before becoming full time. In IT, certifications speak alot about your 'experience'. Whether that's the right thing or not, that's another topic but there are certifications out there that I bet you could pass in order to get some credentials under your belt. The CompTIA A+ certification comes to mind. If you've ever built your own PC, if you understand what the different components do and how they connect, things like that, it's a certification that won't take you a whole long time to study for. There were a lot of resources available on the internet when I passed mine. I downloaded every practice test, every study guide I could find, made up some flash cards etc. and I passed both the hardware and software certs after maybe 1.5-2 weeks studying.
You might also check with a IT placement firm. They might have odd jobs that don't require a lot of experience (like putting PCs on desktops, switching out monitors etc.). That will expose you to IT work and maybe get your foot in the door someplace. Short of a degree or work experience, that's probably your best bet.
Good luck to you!
Those are some things that I'm looking for. It's just I wouldn't know where to start looking for an IT company out here. I will have to keep trying, I was just hopeing someone here would have some great places.
That does help, thanks for the tips and all, I most likely will do the same.

Craigslist Ottawa (http://ottawa.craigslist.org/)...
of course I have, they really don't have anything, except for semi-professional people and none IT kind of jobs.

CircuitCity in the US also have Firedog ... don't ignore the big box retailers ... many of them have tech departments (and the employee discounts don't hurt).
yes they do, I tried that about a year ago or something, they only want years and years of experienced people and all these things you need to have, as in professionals lol
