View Full Version : Simple Router Problem That I Am Too Stupid To Solve

I have a DSL modem (2Wire Homeportal) and a newly purchased Dlink router (EBR-2310) so I can have two computers on the innernets at once with ethernet connetions (As the modem has one ethernet and one usb connection).

Modem is plugged into the router which has both computers plugged into it.

My dsl connection is PPPoE meaning I have a name/pass in the modem. The same name and pass are in the router as well, though. When the computers are hooked to the router and the router to the modem I cannot access the modem control panel so I assume there is something else I have to set up in the router control panel, however, my ignorance in this field hinders my ability to solve this issue. Something that my friend mentioned was about how maybe both the router and modem are using the same subnet? Well, as far as I can tell each uses 255.255.255.0 but I keep getting errors when I try to change it for either so I think I'm doing something wrong.

I can provide more information if needed but I'm unsure what that would be because I have little experience with this stuff u.u

Try these instructions. I found this on the Dlink site. Seems to cover your issue. Good luck.

You might try calling your cable provider and asking them about what support the modem has for routers. A friend of mine had an older modem and bought a new router to share the net in the house, but couldn't and it turned out that it was because of his old modem. It wouldn't handle the requests from the outer properly.

Ok, I am almost going to explode.

The page acidburn linked to do not work for me as it was essentially what I had done on my own. Numerous google attempts and pokes around the dlink and 2wire support sites have given me nothing to work with.

So I'm going to return the router tomorrow and buy a new modem. So should be ok, right? I can get modems that have multiple ethernet ports? I would imagine so but didn't look at the modems enough when I went to get the router to see any.

My only concern is the setup on a modem. I have my PPPoE username and pass but what else would I need to put in before the innernets work? Too much terminology that I am next to clueless with. Primary DNS? Default Gateways? hahaha. I have a lot of information in my 2wire modem, how much would I have to paste into notepad to get a new modem up and running?

Also any brand recommendations would be appreciated. I don't need wireless, just a few ethernet ports.

Your problem is that your "modem" is a router, and you are trying to log into the Internet with a router, through a router, that is already logged in.

Take back the DLink, buy a switch, that is all you need, the two wire can support multiple connections, it assigns IP addresses, it is a router. If you get a switch then you will still have the wireless through your sucky 2Wire (sorry, but I hate them), and the multiple Ethernet ports will be obtained with the switch.

good luck.

Well... As you can see, I was not lying when I said I had little experience with this. I'll be getting a switch tomorrow after returning the Dlink. Thanks sevver ><!!

A couple of months ago i would have said go D-Link or Linksys in response to your brand recommendation request, but after going through a much more drawn out problem with a wireless D-Link, i have to say that i will never buy a D-link networking product again

ARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

I'm so flippin pissed right now that i'm tempted to spit out a bunch of swear words and probably get friggin banned.

I'm trying to troubleshoot that POS d-link router (AGAIN), because we switched from Qwest to Comcast (seems to be a mistake so far), and i have to change some settings.

So i remembered that link, and having looked at it the other day when i made that first post, i thought "hmm, could be interesting. Wonder if it applies to the dl-624S, i'll have to try it." So here i am, all stoked to check it out... and the page is gone   wtf..

Any ideas? I've spent probably over 3 hours on the phone with tech support on several ocassions, and they have not provided me ANY real, working solutions -- they last for a little while, but as soon as i start browsing the net avidly (multiple tabs, etc), things start lagging out hard again
