View Full Version : Silent War #1 - Is it worth buying?
OK, so Silent War #1 is supossed to come out on Wednesday and I'm torn about whether or not to read it. The book is a mini that deals with the Inhumans declared war on Earth actually going active. For those of you that might not recall, the Inhumans declared war on the earth because Quicksilver stole the Terragen Mists. I want to hear people's opinions on this as I'm very torn.
Pro:
1. Black Bolt-after seeing what Black Bolt did in NA Illuinatti #1 how could you not want to see that again
2. Not that familiar with the Inhumans - but they seem cool
3. Quicksilver will be in it. Quicksilver is a dick and that entertains me
4. Madrox and Layla Miller will be in it
5. Could have repercussions that show up later
Con:
1. It's written by David ****ing Hine. His Civil War X-Men mini was an atrocity. He should be tried for crimes against nature. The only thing worse than the story was the art.
2. The art looks sketchy (not like that - I mean sketchy bad)
3. It's written by David Hine
4. It would seem to feature the FF as the classic FF which makes it out of continuity or just stupid
5. It's written by David Hine

Honestly, for the $2.99 cover price, why not. Its its horrid, then you know and don't need to bother looking into the mini any farther.
Also, while its a grey area, you can download a DCP copy of it and then read it. If you like it, go pick it up and support the local comic book stores, god knows they need it.

Man, that X-Men mini was horrible. Just horrible. Worse than bad.
I'll probably be picking it up too.

The story was horrid but the art still gives me nightmares. Seriously, the Manson family drew nicer things in blood

Hey, guys. I'm going to try and help out with this one since I've had a chance to read this issue already. I will preface all of this by saying I'm an old school Marvel Zombie who has been very upset with Marvel over the last two years or so. I have no real love of Marvel right now, but I'm trying to read some of their books (post-CW) and see if I can find "the love" again.
OK - let's go..

This issue is good. I have no prior experience with David Hine. I've heard mised reviews of his work, but for me reading his work for the first time I liked it. Its not anything award winning, but its a good comic book. Your points above are all good "pros" for picking up this issue. There's not a lot of Black Bolt in this issue, but what appearance he does make its a fairly telling look at this royal figure. He's troubled and Hine does a good job at showing that.
The Inhumans are making a come back into mainstream Marvel and I liked that. I have some experience with them thanks to my reading of Fantastic Four for almost twenty years, but I'm still learning about them. If you've never read anything about the Inhumans or really need some reference for this miniseries as a whole, I'd go to Comixfan and read the following post:
http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/forums/showthread.php?t=41123
I think they did a really good job at bringing people up to speed on the Inhumans and where this miniseries could lead. If you're looking to read this because you think there are going to be some future ramifications steming out of this I would recommend picking this book up. This may not be something along the lines of Civil War or Annihilation, but I think there will be some consequences that will be felt for a while. Who knows, maybe we'll get more Inhumans in other titles which I'm all for.

Now, like I said before, I have no experience with Hine's work in the past. The writing in this issue is good. I understood what was going on throughout the whole book. The dialogue was good. I think Gorgon's speech in the early part of the book ran a little long and didn't quiet seem to be something Gorgon would say (not in those words) but I'm not screaming he's out of character since I don't know him enough to make that call.
The art (as with all comics) is up to the reader to decide if they like it or not. I like it because its got a dark tone to it that fits the story. I think the biggest artistic element in this book is the coloring. The colors are used well to set tones and scenes. The art for me is good, but I can see where some people may not like it.
The appearance of the Fantastic Four is my biggest complaint of the book. We don't know when this book takes place in continuity because of their appearance. I think Marvel editorial is to blame here and not Hine. They should have caught this or at least planned better for it. This miniseries is in continuity as far as the Inhumans declaring war on America, but exactly when it happens is in the air. I'm guessing before Civil War #3.
If you're interested, I wrote a review of the book over at my site (www.comicaddiction.com).
Thanks!

But will she (and Madrox) be as good when not written by Peter David?

See, that's the question... I don't think they show up till issue #2 or #3.
is anyone as good when they're not written by David, Bendis, Brubaker, or Vaughn?
not usually

You forgot Whedon.
you got me there
there are likely others too
The fact that it's written by Hine is enough for me to not buy it. He and Jenkins have made my shit list with their atrocious tie-ins for big events. NEVER AGAIN!
thanks for all the input
I'm going for it
