Extend Desktop to Netbook/Laptop

Is it possible to somehow connect a laptop or netbook to a desktop, and pretty much have the laptop be an extension of the desktop. Sort of like having dual monitors and being able to drag and drop items from one monitor to the other, only doing so with a laptop and a desktop, and having access to the hard drives and memory of the laptop through the desktop?

Pretty much I want to be able to dock my laptop to the desktop and have the laptop become back of the desktop. I know how to do this through a network, but still this feels a little detached. Being able to do as i described would really cause immersion.

If the laptop has a VGA/DVI/HDMI input then yes, other wise you can use some thing like synergy which will allow you to control both computers from a single computer.
