Last night, I was cooking soon do boo (sp?) which is a Korean tofu soup. It’s a pretty spicy dish and I was adding the chili powder/seasoning to the boiling water and a huge whiff of steam blew some of the powder back into my eyes. That freaking stung enough, so I took out my contacts.
That wasn’t too bad but this morning I was in for a huge surprise. I must have neglected to clean my contacts well when I put them away the night before they must have somehow continued absorbing all of the chili powder dust overnight. My eyes felt like they were on fire and they wouldn’t stop tearing for a few minutes.
Anyone else have any cooking injuries / horror stories?

it sure did. I just thought about it again, and I realized that I basically pepper sprayed myself in a way. Ha. Awesome.

I once went to shake a bottle of chili sauce without making sure the twisty top was closed. You can guess what happened next. That was worse than getting lemon juice in my eyes.
a few years back I was being a HUGE idiot and didn't pay attention when I slammed a knife down...right into a finger. Went through the side of a nail and hit the bone, but it didn't come off. Thank the gods. I was so glad my mom's a nurse. Didn't even have to go in in the end, though it hurt like all ****.

Not really a cooking story - but part of the hunting/gathering aspect of getting for for cooking ... I put a fish hook through the palm of my hand. Lucky I didn't have chili pepper/sauce in my eyes, so I was able to push it all the way through, cut off the shank, and remove the hook.

OW!Yes. Extremely. Bigger worry from tentnas than anything else ... but my shots where up to date. Hurt like a *****, but no scar.
How?Ever been fishing? It happens. Its not an uncommon accident.
Why?Ever been fishing? Maybe its a guy thing, sitting in a boat or on a river bank, drinking beer, bull shitting with each other. Nothing beats the taste/flavour of fresh caught fish.
I am not into hunting, but used to really enjoy fishing.

While it had nothing to do with cooking at the time, since it has already been mentioned... I tore the length of my thumb open on a fish hook once. Reached into the back seat of a truck at night looking for a flashlight, felt something stab into my thumb and instinctively pulled away. Riiiipppp.
Then when I was 10 or so a friend of mine was holding an orange in his hand and trying to cut it at the same time... ended up with a citric acid covered knife through is hand. He was a smart kid.
As for myself and cooking, I can't think of anything but the common burns, minor cuts, and mistaking salt for sugar and making some really bad cookies once.

I've been fishing MANY times and have never sank a hook so deeply into myself that I had to push it through to cover the barbs. Nor has anyone I've ever gone with.

I've been fishing MANY times and have never sank a hook so deeply into myself that I had to push it through to cover the barbs. Nor has anyone I've ever gone with.In that case you have either:
a.) not been fishing drunk, ot
b.) not been on the edge of a muddy, steep, river bank setting a drop line for a Murray Cod (http://www.nativefish.asn.au/cod.html), when you slipped and the hook snagged your hand as you grabbed for a tree branch to stop from falling into the water.
You might guess from the answers listed that my situation was "b". The Murray Cod is now pretty much a protected species. It is GREAT eating, but over 20 years of drought in Australia, and the introduction of European Carp in the waterways have severly impacted its habitat.
I used to go out with drop lines on a series of reefs off the continental shelf near where I lived as a teenager as well. And there were often mishaps on the fishing trips - mostly minor, but the occassional knife or hook problem as well.

Most of you may think that it's hard not to mess up while cooking Cup-o-Noodles. But, I was really stupid and didn't realize that the instructions said microwave the cup with water or pour boiling water into the cup. Being the genius that I am, I poured boiling hot water in the cup then I proceeded to microwave it. After reaching in and grabbing the cup, my fingers immediately burned and I dropped the cup on the counter. The water splashed out and got all over my arm. It was the worst burning feeling that I have ever had.

Make sure you cool down a pressure cooker before trying to take the lid off. I didn't and scalding stew exploded onto my face and shoulder. Luckily no burn marks on the face but my shoulder still harbours the wounds.

I burnt my hand pretty bad this weekend on this appliance that steams eggs, and meat, and toasts bread to make an egg McMuffin type food. When it finished cooking I took off the top and a huge fine concentrated jet of steam burned the shit out of my right hand.

Ever cook bacon naked?
My worst injury was from a deep fryer... I have an inch and a 2"L .5" W scar on my arm from it...
If anyone here has worked in a professional kitchen you'd understand that its not that big of a deal.

Yes. Unless wearing an apron counts as wearing something.

I've burnt myself trying to test the doneness of brownies in an electric open-coil oven...accidentally bonked my finger on the element. Ouch.

Um, ew. Gross!
I've cut my thumb on two occasions, both times while mincing an onion. Never had anything super serious, since I generally know what I'm doing in the kitchen. But accidents can happen to the best of us.

I was frying hamburger once and grease sprayed all up my arm. I had burns that didn't go away for months, I think it may have hurt as much/more than when I broke my arm. I'm generally pretty good in the kitchen, but I guess I left it on a little high, a little long.
