http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/tristansmith/CS3/lamp.jpg

Managed to follow along and do the lamp, took me 3 times longer though :)

got confused at the start cos I didn't set the mode for the pen tool to "Paths"
once that was done though all went well.

enjoyed the way you can draw then easily select the path into a layer
and loved the warp tool, really made the shade better.

when finished I duplicated the shade and dragged it down over the body
lightened it and set the opacity lower (like Bert did with the base shadow)
thought that would show a reflection of the light, had to warp it a little

Also did the same with the hole on top, put the texture in there and warped it
to match.

Its my first Picture I have drawn :) well pleased
Thanks Bert your a star!

Looks pretty good but I think it still looks too photshopped. Peop'e should not be able to look at an image and reconstruct it easily. I see some and I see "render clouds, radial blur, texture, bevel and emboss, ect..." Nevertheless keep at it, you only learn by doing it more. I estimate that I'll be good in about 10 years but right now my stuff looks crappy.

Hi im a self taught video and audio designer, I sometimes pick up freelance jobs, I've got a strong technical mastery of photoshop and other programs but my artistic skills are weak and when i watch bert do something that to me seems very silly in photoshop, and then end up with a piece that looks remarkably good fascinated me. I'm hoping that we get to see a whole bunch more on his artistic methodology.

Thanks for the reply. I'll fully agree with you on "you'll only get better by doing it more", but I also could use some extra eyes for some of the art in a more specific way. Some of the pictures that are really easy to look at and just see what filters were used I made as experimentation for my own reference. If you could tell me what you would like to see changed and how, then I could happily fix it for the sake of seeing if I could do it.

Of all the episodes I've seen, my favourite is still the first (even though I have a little trouble getting the swirling vortex part to work at all).

My first two attempts came out okay, but not great:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/cybogoblin/omglasers.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/cybogoblin/omglasers2.jpg

I recently tried again, and managed to refine the process a little by using the first method and simply erasing all but one of the 'beams'...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/cybogoblin/infinite.jpg
(base image is from Doctor Who: The Infinite Quest by the BBC)

While it hasn't been covered (to my knowledge) by Bert, I found and easy way to achieve bokur-style images by following this handy tutorial (http://ebin.wordpress.com/2007/03/21/how-to-turn-your-photo-into-movie-like-effect-using-photoshop/). One of the best I've come up with is this screenshot from LotRO (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/cybogoblin/lotro/SmokinginBree.jpg).

the light switch is pretty cool. The bottom part is a bit off but all in all nice work. Also I might suggest you rotate the screws a bit so they don't look so perfect and straight. If you look at a light switch, most of the time the screws aren't pointing straight up and down.

Thanks Shinigami, you are right about the screws and the bottom part though, good point. Oddly enough, the people who built our house we actually anal enough to put every screw straight up and down haha! I can say I'm sure not like that...

Yup, a total newbie, if fact just found this forum tonight after watching Bert's latest Pixel Perfect. Read a few posts and saw the Spawn color job by Jordan very impressive, I grabbed the download and spent a couple hours playing. http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm310/LorenS_05/playtime.png Was going to post the result but for some reason I couldn't get it to work. I am most likely missing something simple a combination of being tired and having a brain that is pretty much oatmeal after this week. If someone could tell me the process I would appreciate it greatly.

If you're not hosting it elsewhere, you can put it up as an attachment. To do that, click Go Advanced (below) and then scroll down till you see "Manage Attachments". Click that (make sure your pop-up blocker is off) and click Browse to find the file on your hard drive and then click upload. Be sure that your file fits within their requirements for it's particular extension. Right now the restrictions are not conducive to the purposes of this section of the forum so it's better to host it on your own and link to it using the IMG tags.

Take Care All,

Aha, was missing a letter in the URL DUH moment.

Great job, I think it's excellent!!

Two ways...either use the IMG tag or the attachment at the bottom. Using the attachment has file restrictions tho (which are displayed in the popup window).

if you're using it off your desktop like you are, you'll need to add it as an attachment. You can only use the img tags if they're hosted elsewhere on the web.

If that's the route you'd like to go I suggest you get an account at Deviantart, Flikr, or one of the other major free image hosting sites and host your pictures there. Just be on the look out for piracy of your pictures. I've seen several cases where the images were submitted (or stolen by) istockphoto and one was even used on a book cover w/o the photographers consent. Water mark your images if you can. Try to do it in a way that we can see the image but one that won't destroy the overall quality of the image.

Hmmm maybe Bert could do an episode on watermarking your work to show on the internet...

Will,

Very nice indeed, an easy way to eliminate some of the white haze line around the buildings and get more of the trees is to copy your green channel and adjust the levels until is is b/w fill in any hot spots in the foreground with black and select it invert so the sky are is selected and then drop in your night sky. Something Bert has done a couple of times in his Pixel Perfect broadcasts.

Try doing it by alpha channels to create the waves. Experiment with textures, probably canvas, or Hard Grain, Levels, Waves or other distortion filters. In Bert's words "just play".

Hey, I took your advice, and just played with it. Still not finished it yet, but gettin there. I made a new layer over the sea, filled it with white, and in the Blend If mode, played with the sliders. With the waves in the distance, I was happy, but the waves close up looked terrible, so I erased them and cloned some of the other waves. Still have a lot of work on the islands though. Hello to all. I'm new to the forum. Not entirely sure this may be the right place for this, but I'm going to throw it out here and see what happens.

Ok. So at some point in your life you might need to make a quick mock up of some wood for use in text or something like that or as a small background for something else. So here's a quick way of making a really quick effect with photoshop (cs3 I'm using but its garunteed to work from photoshop 7 up).

I've created a 512X512 canvas. one of my bad habits is to always create a new layer and never work on the background layer, just in case I need something blank underneath. Strange I know, but we all have our Foibles.

The first job will be to run the rosewood 2 action and then to gaussian blur it by one - this will take the sharpness out of the overall effect to give it a more natural and flowing look.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e343/JamesRandom/wood1.jpg

Now, reset your pallet to black and white by pressing D. Then, duplicate the layer and run the fibers filter. I usually like to click randomize a few times. Once that is done, CMD + T to transform the layer and rotate either CW or CCW by 90°

Link due to restrictions:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e343/JamesRandom/wood2.jpg

Now. Switch the layers blending mode to 'multiply' and reduce the opacity to around 65%, more if you want your wood to be darker and more grungy looking.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e343/JamesRandom/wood3.jpg

Ok. So this is a pretty effective base for wood. If you want to play around to add some things we might try polishing our wood by adding a reflection to it. I found a random photo of a hallway ( http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e343/JamesRandom/wood4.jpg ) on a stock website and added it to the piece that we are making and reduced its opacity to around 13%. You can make it higher or lower than his value depending on your taste.

I have to post a link here because of the image restrictions for posts:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e343/JamesRandom/wood5.jpg

Now, for a final touch I added the lighting effect filter. When doing this, its a good idea to find a reflection where the light is coming from either the left or right diagonals - i just find this pattern the most pleasing to my eye.

Run the filter and postion the light accordingly to get this:

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e343/JamesRandom/wood6.jpg

And there you have it. This took less than a minute to do and looks effective.

Hope it helps!

:)

Thanks man, I really appreciate your comments. I worked pretty hard at it and I own pretty much everything to Bert and the pixel perfect episodes. They really brought my skills to the next level. Really glad you enjoyed it!!

I forgot to post the stats for the pic:
Total work time on the painting: 16.75 hours
Software used: Photoshop 90% of the time, Illustrator the other 10%
Photoshop layers: 158
Photoshop paths: 28
Full image dimensions: 15.6 inches wide x 20.5 inches high
Full Photoshop image size: 324 megs (this thing takes 1.5 gigs of RAM when I have it loaded in Photoshop)

I like this one, do you have reference shots?

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41599000/jpg/_41599172_07_eritrea_spronk.jpg

this was the one and only reference shot, i made a few changes. I've considered changing it to night and adding neon and spotlights maybe some other time. I might try more art deco style buildings. right now i'm working on something similar to bert's Lunch in Tiburon. well for me it was just lunch

I saw something similar to that design and doing the actual letters in grass is a very time consuming effort if you really want it to look real.

Thanks! I posted a tutorial of the technique I use if any of you are interested. It's a bit easier than the manual masking method and the results come out pretty nice.

Here's a couple more examples using the same method:

Been subscribing to Pixel Perfect podcast for awhile and I thought I would like to show what designs practice I've been doing. These are two latest designs I did for a faction in Gametrailers.com:

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/668/grunge2small.png

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/2751/zeejay2l.jpg

Just wanna give a shoutout that the show really help me a lot in my designing career especially the latest episode on Vanishing Point. Never really use that before.

I would like to share one of the images I made, inspired by Berts lessons. A lot of stuff I've learned from the Pixel Perfect show is in there, like the lightning in the background, the clouds etc. Check it out here: http://mrkuros.deviantart.com/art/Evil-Mario-159629871
