View Full Version : Joe Quesada says Cap will NOT die
He also explains the no April Cap solicit
This is from this week's Joe Friday's at Newsarama:
Q: “Salieri”- Salutations, my dear Joseph! MY question to you is this: can you say for certain that Marvel will ALWAYS have a Captain America?
JQ: My dearest Salieri, I could never guarantee “always” because that implies that I will have a semblance of control here at Marvel forever and we all know that ain’t gonna happen. Also, who knows what the future may bring. If one day someone comes up to me with an idea that takes Cap off the table, or dare I say it, kills him, then we’re going to have to take a serious look at it if it makes for an incredible story with interesting ramifications (no, Cap is not dying in Civil War for all of you comic book Nostradamuses out there).
By the way, I can say the exact same thing about Spidey, Iron Man, or any character for that matter. There are no guarantees in the Marvel U other than our books being the best in the world and always keeping you at the edge of your seat.
“cuckoo”- Why wasn't there a new Captain America solicited in the April solicitations? JQ: It’s a continuity issue, cuckoo, as we found ourselves in places with some of the key characters from Civil War (due to the delay), where they were left and where their monthlies started off. Cap is solicited once again in May, sorry about that.

Alrighty, either Stark or Cap will become Ronin.
Just my guess.

I'm hoping for Cap. they would have to pull off some real story magic to make Tony believable as a member of the New Avengers post CW because they are the anti-reg team. The only way I can think of is if they don't know who Ronin actually is but I can't buy that as being realistic given the climate

Pardon my "n00b-ness," but who/what is Ronin?
Pardon my "n00b-ness," but who/what is Ronin?
please no noobing that's just gross
A Ronin is a masterless samurai. A few people have taken the identity of Ronin throughout the years. Most recently Echo was Ronin as seen in the pages of New Avengers.

Gotcha. Looked it up on wiki after I read your post. Mucho grassy-ass.

Let's work this out in that context. Cap has always done the work of his government(more or less). Now, his government is out to get him. Kinda sounds like a masterless samurai right? I really hope he's Ronin

He has also quit being "Captain America" at least twice in the past when he has become disillusioned at the US Government - once as Nomad and once as The Captain. So there's historical precedent.

With the way the government is going in the Marvel U, Cap is perfect for the Ronin job.

That's a good point too. And I love the idea of Cap with swords(not permanently but for now) and I promise I won't complain about it; mostly because he could actually benefit from using one.
but I digress.....

Personally, my favorite person to have swords is Wolverine. I mean, 6 unbreakable blades are not enough.

Dude,
It makes total total sense for Stark to be Ronin.
Bendis did say that the new Ronin has already had many costumes... sure cap has had a bunch, but look at Iron Man, jesus... theres like 50 versions.
I bet you, someone relativly big dies at the end of civil war, Tony feels really really bad, he's been made out to be an asshole all of civil war. He needs to redeem himself, by joining the underground avengers.
Cap doesnt know martial arts like Tony Stark, did you see in the Illuminati book Tony kicking ass without the suit? (which is also written by bendis...hmmm) and Tony kicking ass without the suit in Cap and Iron man one shot Civil war that came out a few weeks ago...
Sure, Cap as Ronin would be awesome... but it makes alot alot alot more sense if it was Stark. I think it would be brilliant.
but i heard from a source at marvel, that ronin is Aunt May.
jarvis tought her all the moves.

They would never have him because they could never trust him. It would be astonishly idiotic for Marvel to try to sell that to us. Providing all else is true, big death and he feels bad, they would never let him in.

Would this mean no shield?!?

Doesn't he usually have a different shield?

I know one thing. I don't think Oeming has the chops to handle Steve Rogers.
It's hard to tell with that shield. I think the US Agent Shield is very similar, but it's black and white, and since that image is in silhouette, you can't tell.
Who's carrying around the old WW2 Cap shield these days? Battlestar?

I would agree, and so must Marvel - they downgraded Omega Flight from ongoing to a 5-issue mini.

Let me preface this by saying I don't read any X-books(except Astonishing but I don't think that counts):
A guy at my comic shop was talking to the owner about the new Ronin and made a guess that I have never heard mentioned before...Professor X.
I kind of laughed it off at first, but after thinking about it, I think it could totally work.
Think about it: He's always been the public figure(Samurai) fighting for mutant kind(Master).
Thought I would add my two cents.

Did anyone anywhere ever address where Professor X was during/immediately following House of M? Seeing the Ronin speculation reminded me that he just sorta walked up one day like nothing had happened. "Who, me? Oh, I was backpacking through Europe. Reading a lot, Camus, you know. I just had to get my **** together."
Doesn't he usually have a different shield?
it's very similar.
2 things:
1. back when the Omega Flight project was annouced there was rampant speculation it was Cap
2. Marvel showed it was not in Front Line or Choosing Sides
think it was Choosing Sides
US Agent was dropped into Canada to begin his new role in Omega Flight

youll also notice how he said 'cap' & nothing about steve rodgers & it wouldnt be the first time they replaced him... also in the new marvel previews they have a few page preview of joss' runaways & on one panel it says the runaways went to new york 'where they ran into the avengers and our..... our late associate" & in the panel is cap, wolverine & spider-man. so take from that what you will. & in the civil war: fallen son-wolverine it says "how will wolverine react to the death of one of the most beloved characters in the marvel universe" again just tossing this stuff out there. i guess we wont know till civil war #7 which has been pushed back till the last wed of febuary!
sometimes the dectective work is more fun than the actual story haha :D

On the Fallen Son books, it's already been said that the names of the books in the mini may be intentionally deceptive. Pretending to kill Cap will get them just as much publicity and generate as much buzz as actually doing it. I'm not buying it.

Has anyone thought of maybe Aunt May or Mary Jane being the ones who might die in Civil War? Last cliffhanger in ASM had her in sniper’s aim and you have to wonder what the triggering event would be to get Peter back in black.

sadly, while neither of them would be a major death in that they are specific to one set of titles rather than say Cap who is everywhere, it would still be more major than Goliath

I think Marvel killing off Aunt May or MJ would just be manipulative emotionally. How many heart attacks and near death experiences has Aunt May had to be so cheaply killed off just for the shock value. Pray it doesn't happen folks.

I think Captain America will defeat Iron Man at the end of Civil War. It will be a moral victory, but otherwise hollow in that both forces will be decimated. Tony on the verge of unconsciousness will illustrate for Steve that society has changed whether he agrees with, or even likes it.
Steve will renounce Captain America, and walk away from smoldering ruins from battle, leaving the reader to wonder.....what will become of Captain America, as well as Steve Rodgers now.....
Perhaps I am stating obvious. I would LOVE to see the scenario of Tony Stark winning. I'm just trying to figure out how they can play this out while leaving Cap with some dignity.
20 more days.....

Stark is going to win, if not the final battle, then still the war. I think that they've tipped their hand on that one.
As for Cap and his dignity, it's already secure. He may yet lose this fight but he was right. He would still have stood up for what he believes in though even if he weren't. For me, Cap's dignity is more connected to who he is and how he reacts to that rather than his individual victories or defeats.
kind of like the real America

Ah, but he died in Captain America, not Civil War. So Quesada didn't lie and he wasn't anxious to spoil months ago.

Hey, if this thread can come back to life, so too Captain America... my non comics reading friend was very breathless on the telephone today about Cap dying (saw it on Yahoo). Me: "Yeah, and do you remember when Superman died and it was all over the news too? I have to check on the forum I belong to, there I'll get the real poop." I explained what the "whacky button" was - the button the brings dead people back.
As for Ronin being Cap, where's my "nostradamus prize" for saying this was already smelling obvious several weeks ago, and people just made "Aunt May is Ronin" jokes. Just you wait, just when you think Marvel can really NOT surprise you, they will really NOT surprise you...
And you will NOT be surprised...
Quesada lied and people died
let's all start chanting now
but really, how could he not lie about this? You can't really answer the question with 'no comment'. That would nearly be an admission.

Ok, I'm up for that, everybody now, CHANT!
Actually, I find it hard to get worked up about this...because as a former diehard Marvel Zombie, I have all these really great DC books to read...there's the problem in a nutshell.

As they say during cross examination on every other episode of Law & Order, so if he was lying then, how are we to believe he's not lying now? (chung-chung!)
