I recently setup a m0n0wall about 3-4 months ago and so far the experience im having with it is fantastic!

All it takes to create one is

- 2 Network Interface Cards
- Small Thumbdrive or Small Internal HD
- Crappy Motherboard
- Crappy 128mb stick of memory
- Switch
- Cat5(6) cabling duh!

The jist i have outa it is that its running as a router, my favorite thing about it is that it has traffic shaping which is sweet because i seed most of the time at 40kB/s and my limit for roadrunner is around 40kB/s so with out the m0n0wall it bogs me down pretty bad but with the traffic shaping enabled I dont feel any lag at all, very easy to customize and update!

anyone else have any other opinions about this?

are you sure you need 128MB of RAM? none less?

A hardware firewall's great to have. Though the traffic shaping can be done on windows as well - look up a program called cFos (www.cfos.de) to do that.

I've been wanting to setup a hardware firewall, but never found two network cards.

I'm really not sure, all i know is that i tried it w/ a 64megstick and it would not fully startup =/ added another and it worked peachy

so mayb it was just my memory i was putting in =/

I just could have sworn it was less. dunno. usually 96MB works for most things.

The recommended amount of RAM for m0n0wall is 64 MB. It might work with less, especially if you don't use a lot of features/services, but there are no guarantees about that – watch out for failing firmware uploads (m0n0wall does not use swap space, so it can't do much about running out of memory).

Thank god. I don't think I have any mobos left that support more than that.

I have a home network and am currently using m0n0wall for the firewall. We have VPN enabled. The firewall has been broken into by a hacker known to us as Neo. He leaves messages taunting us on the status page of the m0n0wall web-based configuration site. Once on our network, Neo opens up the microphone on my laptop and eavesdrops. This same hacker used to break into our Linksys router when we had one. He evenutally "bricked" the Linksys router. He's been with us on and off for two years. I need help. I feel like I've tried everything. You can hear my whole story at talkshoe.com. It's Hacker in the House in the Technology section. If anyone is an expert I would appreciate an email, or better, a call into the show to discuss what we can do to find out how Neo breaks in and how to stop him.
