View Full Version : Mighty Avengers #1

Apparently Cho is only doing the first arc. Angel Medina is jumping on starting with arc #2. Yuck. My enthusiasm for that book just dropped a couple of notches. Hopefully Medina's only doing one arc and then Cho will come back, but who knows. 6 issues by one artist is an eternity on a mainstream book these days.

Yeah, that team gets destroyed in an instance run. No balance.
Sucks about the Frank Cho news. Sucks hard. But I'm not surprised.
I really like cho too

I'm a little surprised. I thought that the Civil War delays may mean the regular titles get so far ahead, we get the creative teams for longer, uninterrupted runs. I guess this just means they'll waste the three months they didn't put out books.
I don't know much about Angel Medina. Is he good?

I wish Frank Cho was more of a permanent fixture on the book. I wish Frank Cho cranked out monthly issues like nobody's business. Thing is, though, when Frank Cho was announced on the book, all I heard was "Good luck getting that out on time, chortle chortle." Well, now look. You didn't clap, and Tinkerbell is dead.
To look at it another way, the Cho run lasts until, what, September? Good God, I'll be 32 by then. I could almost have a newborn. That's ages.

You should name the kid "Frank Cho" under the condition that we get six more months of the artist on Mighty Avengers and that the books come out in a timely manner. C'mon, how big of an Avengers fan are you? :)

Interesting story: We were actually at the Marvel panel where they announced this book. Frank Cho showed up late. He then went on to eat a sandwich during the panel, and didn't say a word. Indicative?
But they said that it would be ongoing at the time. But we knew....we all knew....

Oh oh oh! It would be, if my wife were pregnant at all. That was actually my point, that I could almost have brought new life into the world by then and my wife isn't even pregnant now.
By the way, fun fact: creating and gestating an entire new human being takes less time than pencilling an issue of the Ultimates. Are you familiar with the size of the human genome?
Anyway. I'm sure Frank Cho is a lovely man who will entertain me for many months once this book actually arrives in a store somewhere. (You know, I actually mind delays less than the fact that new projects are announced 18 months in advance. I don't believe the Dark Tower is actually a book; it's just something we've been talking about since I was junior high. Just a little something to pass the time.)

Good luck with the upcoming kid. Since birth of my little guy three years ago, One word of advice: I have moved to waiting for stories to come available until published in TPB format: easier to store in high places, and more difficult to tear when toddlers get somethin' in that kung-fu grip of their's.
Frank Cho: I am optimistic he will continue working on Mighty Avengers. His work on Shanna the She-Devil was excellent, and he handled writing this series extraordinarily well. Perhaps he will return for a later arc. I am not worries about late shipments, unless it is to the extent of Allstar Batman & Robin The Boy Wonder, (that's getting ridiculous!).
I have enjoyed Angel Medina's work on Sensational Spider-Man, perhaps a more consistently better title at the moment than Amazing Spider-Man. I look forward to his contribution to Mighty Avengers (I think this might his first work on a team book?)
Cheers,
Marcus

angel medina is ****ing horrible... i only buy his sensational spiderman books because i have an emotional attachment. Cho is totally in my top 5 artists of all time, man this sucks.... i cant get away from that shitty ass McFarlane wannabe....
thank god for new avengers.

I agree with you - we should wait and give him a chance, but my strong gut feeling is that I'll drop the book after Cho leaves. Nothing against Medina, his is just an art style that doesn't do it for me. I'm sure that lots will enjoy it.

I seem to remember reading somewhere(possibly Cho's website) that he's taking a 6 issue leave to do something else for Marvel and try and get an issue of Liberty Meadows done. I also remember being fairly excited about whatever the other Marvel thing was.

It's definitely more of a "traditional" Avengers team, which will appeal to those who have felt that New Avengers has destroyed all that is good and holy in the world.

Mine, too - and as much as Cho leaving so early, what I don't get is replacing him with a style that seems so different. If the Mighty Avengers was going to be the Big Fun Avengers book, for which Cho's style is perfect, wouldn't they want to next guy to at least have a similar vibe?

Has DC offered a reason(s) for All Star Batman and Robin and Wildcats being as late as they are? It just seems ludicrous letting a guy like Lee renown for being late to work on two high profile books. Maybe when Adam Hughes comes on board for All Star Wonder Woman, Lee will appear to be working.....faster?
A Walter Simonson question: I know he is writing Hawkgirl (disappointed Chaykin is only doing covers now), and has done various covers for Infinite Crisis related titles, and is scheduled for an upcoming Detective Comics cover. I also saw that he is scheduled to draw two parts of four parts in a Hawkgirl story
Does anyone out there know of when we can see this guy draw again? I loved his stuff at Marvel, perhaps his Fantastic Four work more than his renown Thor run. Is he exclusively signed to DC? If yes, why would they sign him up just to write?
Questions, questions......

Simonson used to draw X-Factor, the first time it was one of my favorite books. As a consumer, I miss him.

And now, a Walt Simonson anecdote:
Many years ago, probably 10 years now, I went to the esteemed "Ithacon" or Ithaca, NY comic convention. The word convention is a misnomer really, as it was more of a collection of tables in a small public gymnasium. But one of the guests at this gathering was Walt Simonson, along with his wife, Louise.
So I waited in line to get something signed, and he wasn't really doing sketches, but the guy in front of me asked for one, and got one, so I did too. I asked for Thor with a hammer. He looked at me like I'd asked him for a ride to the airport. But he sighed and got on with it, and I felt bad. I minute or two later, I had a nice pencil/sharpie sketch of a Thor head with a perspective hammer raised over his head. And the capper was, he made a face like, "ooh, I surprised myself," and then made sure to show his work to his wife, "look what I did!" And that made me feel like I got something special. Thus was the story of my first sketch ever.

I imagine Luke Cage is going to step up and be the "soul" of the New Avengers. He has been at Cap's side through all of Civil War and he is team leader. Also he is one of Bendis' favorite characters.

have you guys read this book yet? i was a little diappointed. it didn't even feel like a bendis book. the action and art were great but what was with the stupid thought bubbles? they added nothing to the story and most of the time they were just snarky comments by the characters. nearing the end i couldn't believe that their first villain was going to be the mole man. THE MOLE MAN?!?!?!?! but the ending sparked my interest and i'll be checking out the next one to see where its going. i think the future arcs are going to be a lot better as well, when the mighty avengers square off against the new avengers i cant wait. that will be a great book!

The Mighty Avengers is a fun and enjoyable read. I would still take great issue with Mr. Stark that he has put together the greatest Avengers team ever. Hyperbole on his part. But against my preconceptions, I actually liked the new team and can see real possibilities here.

i dont mind the idea of a thought balloon, i just didn't like how it was done in this book, they weren't used to add anything, just stupid little comments or tony thinking of a math equation, they didn't really add anything, not real insight. but it was nice to see bendis try something different, he and jeph loeb are the kings of the "though narration boxes" (best description i could come up with)

You can, but at the same time you really can't let hype dictate what is the "Must read" book of the week. Just because it's "important", doesn't mean it's necessarily good. If any lesson is to be learned out of the past two years of Marvel and DC, it's that.
But it is a slow week, and despite its faults, I can still see Cap being the best of. Nothing I've read out of like, 14 books has been overly impressive. Still have to read Welcome to Tranquility though, so I might be wrong.
