I didn't know there where any problems. I think you where victim to the FUD.
It did cause some issues, but I don't think they where that severe.

www.technet.com is a good place for MS issues.

Point IE to the windows update website.
Let windows download the service pack and and subsequent hot fixes. If there were any problems in the SP, it would have been fixed.
Just let the system do it's thing.
But ... While XP SP3 is good, why aren't you looking at Win7? It is the logical place to go and will continue to be updated. XP is essentially dead. Win7 should run as well on your machine if not better than XP.

Yes when sp3 was released it conflicted with certain amd processors and caused blue screen of death, you can find out the details on a few sites
Il back up all my personal files then try it again just wanted to make sure I wouldn’t have any problems with it the 2nd time round,
Xp isn’t dead yet few more years of security updates and it will be nice to wait for windows 7 to lower in price and with the small amount of problems to be fixed .

Microsoft doesn't discount.
What "problems" are you referring to? The same "problems" that XP SP3 introduced (ie - none for most consumers). Check the websites. There was a lot of FUD out there, largely created by the "Microsoftisevileveryoneshouldberunninglinux" crowd.
The issue was not the SP, it was the drivers support. You have a Compaq PC. MS makes sure the OS runs on premier partners computers with no problems. Most of the problems you found early on (that were fixed BTW) had to do with weird driver conflicts. If the service pack causes a problem on initial install, drop back to safe mode (generic drivers are used) and download and apply all the relevant hotfixes.
Also, since you are on a Compaq machine, go to the HP support website and download BIOS and driver updates there as well.

There's still even a lot of fear mongering over Vista also. I've been running Vista since 2007. I picked up a copy of Vista on ebay in late 2007 for like $30 and put it on a 4 year old system, and it ran fine. Vista has a Service Pack 2 now. I bought a brand new Dell a few months ago, and it came with Vista Home Basic (I guess Dell had a bunch of leftover Vista licenses) for $40 less than Windows 7, so I just stuck with Vista.
