Okay, the holiday of St. Valentine is approaching. Let's bounce around some ideas and stuff.
I've got a boyfriend now since December 9th, a friend since last summer who turned into more, and I made him a bog ol' silk quilt for Christmas which he likes and actually uses. But what to do for V-Day? This is also his first V-Day in the US. I don't know if it's celebrated in Canada or the Russian region of the Ukraine. So. Ideas?
And who else here is trying to decide what to do for this holiday?

i'm deciding like always to pretend that it doesn't exist and hope no one gets a big bunch of flowers or stuff at work that will make me completely and utterly depressed.
I think Valentines day is really the holiday to just show them how much you pay attention to them and know them, get them something that maybe they mentioned wanting once or something that you know they will like but don't expect, it's supposed to be about showing how much you care.

I think I'm going to send a singing telegram and flowers to one of my friends. One of my dude friends. From Rosco...
Yep. That will make for a good valentine's. :D

I think I'll go with the e-card this year (flowers are so played out and, well... useless). I don't usually give out bundled flowers unless it's for my mom but she usually prefers that her plants stay alive. I would recommend a nice dinner (either homemade or a nice restaurant). Not only do you get to spend a nice, quiet time with your significant other, you also get a tasty, decent meal (for me that doesn't come around too often).

Don't knock it, it's easier to remember when hallmark hypes it. They should do that for the wife's birthday.

My wife insists I get her flowers. The best gift she can give me is, not spending any money on something!
My wife and I have a mutual agreement to not do anything for each other on Valentine's Day apart from what we normally do for each other. Choosing one day out of the year to show the "appreciation and love" you should show each other all the time just seems kind of dumb to us.
We choose not to waste the money on the flowers, candy, cards, gifts etc. and just reflect on the cool relationship we have. We'll go catch a movie tomorrow. :D

My wife asks for money to buy me a present. I'll just get her nice flowers and maybe handmade chocolates. Valentine's Day isn't real high on our list of holiday observances.
Our tenth anniversary is coming in June though... ideas?

My fiancé and I live in different cities currently, so no plans this year aside from a nice phone call. So I’ll actually be off to see Jack’s Mannequin and Head Automatica in concert that night!

It's a stupid Hallmark holiday. Shouldn't we care for eachother all the time and not on just one day? It's a holiday that has been co-opted by commercial interests to the point where it has been reduced in status.
Look how Hallmark's site is just plastered with Valentines stuff.

Oh, and I will be burning teddy bears at the stake on the 14th if anyone was curious.

We had our 5th last year, and I booked into a local boutique restaurant (http://www.fearrington.com/house/samplemenu.asp) that has a wine pairing degustation menu. OK ... its an extravegant meal, but damn it was good. We did something similar (http://www.ilpalio.com/index.php?id=3) the year before ... and are looking at doing this one again later this month (post StVD).

Pretty much. This is the first V-Day where I actually WANT to do something though.
But yeah, forcing a show of love and such is fake, and it just rubs into the faces of those who are single that they're single.

And what if you do things all the time to show appreciation and love?
It'd be nice for V-Day to be altered into a day to show love for all humans rather than focusing it on a significant other.

I'd toss in some teddy bears, but I've only been given two stuffed animals in my life from guys. Both came from my boyfriend and, since I love the guy, these bears are staying safely with me. :)
You know, I do like the idea of collecting stuffed critters from exes and having a big bonfire for all to see.

For me Valentines is just an excuse to do something fun. I always go out with my g/f, but this time it just means we planned it beforehand. She works 7 days a week so it's really hard for us to plan days to go out. It all depends on how she feels that day.
Generally for me I think those that have a negative view on something will never enjoy it. I decide to look at the positive in it and take what I want out of it, not what's expected of me out of it.
