View Full Version : BestBuy think they're so clever. My laptop returns and is missing 256MB RAM.

Yet another BestBuy rant.
My eMachines M6805 laptop is under warranty. They changed the motherboard and the LCD screen...but now it's missing 256MB DDR RAM! It's running on 256MB RAM instead of 512MB.
Sure, it could be an "error" that the chip isn't placed correctly...
Aren't they supposed to check the laptop before returning it to me?
Goddamnit, now I have to drive all the way back there today.

Was that ram chip stock or did you add it in later? If you put it in, you may have a hell of a time getting it back.

I'm sure this was just an error if you took this in for service. They probably took out the memory as a check and forgot to put it back in. ANNOYING as anything though.

yep they "forgot" to add it. Forgot my ass. You're supposed to check the laptop before handing it back to the customer, it's common-****ing-sense.
They did not have any new 256MB RAM stick, so they gave me one from behind the Geek Squad desks. It's still under warranty until May.
He said they only had 1 stick left. Or else they would have to send the unit back.
I did not buy a $300 warranty for my laptop for it to have a slumber party at BestBuy.
I never did anything to the laptop's hardware, because I knew this would void the warranty. I don't plan on doing any upgrades to it until after the warranty runs out.
Whenever I get a new laptop, it won't be from Best Buy.

How about it won't be from eMachine's? I never thought they had much of a reputation to speak of (the reason why I never got one or recommended one). I'm not speaking from experience though.

I'm not speaking from experience though.eMachines (now Gateway BTW) had a bad rep for their desktop machines because of their desktop componenets used - they were built to a definate price point.
Their laptops on the otherhand were/are solid, and comparable to other laptops in their price range. I would have no problems recommending people at least take a serious look at the eMachine/Gateway laptops when considering a lower (I wont say cheap - because that has other connotations) priced laptop.

I wish I could digg you up for use of the word "connotations."
