I just read the first two pocket books of this and....god damnit. I have to go buy EVERY FREAKING ISSUE I LOVE IT SO MUCH. How am I gonna afford this?
Within the first 20 pages I was hooked for the entire series. NEVER have I seen characters fleshed out so much in such little time. Terry Moore has arguably the best comedic timing of anybody writing comics today.
Conor, if you haven't gone back and re-read the first two books, try again, I beg of you.
I now have a new top 5 book.
This is one of those books I've been threatening to read for quite some time now. OK, next week I'll start SIP. Next week, no SIP. I don't know why.
I will do it one of these days.

DarrOn,
I would stick with the pocket size TPB's of Strangers in Paradise. This is the most affordable way to read the entire series. Terry Moore is close to finishing up this series, so if you are patient enough, all the stories will be eventually collected in these pocket size TPB's. I currently read the stories in larger TPB formats. I love the supporting cast, particularly Freddy and Casey. They are always both great for a laugh. Keep at it.
Cheerio,
Marcus

Does anyone know what Terry Moore is planning on doing after he has completed Strangers in Paradise? The only mainstream work I can recall him doing is an issue on Ultimate Marvel Team-Up featuring Black Widow.

DarrOn, I'm with you. I read the first two pocket trades and then went out and bought the other three and read them in a weekend. I was starting to get grief from my wife because I hadn't taken my nose out of these books in like five days except to work. The only bad thing is it's caused me to start skipping portions of the POW podcast because I know Ron and Josh are going to bring it up. I've been very tempted to go back and buy whichever of the regular trades would pick up where book 5 of the pocket trades leaves off but I haven't done it yet. Maybe this weekend.

I got the first pocket trade free somewhere and loved it. I remember thinking "Wow, this is really good, no way this is the full thing..." But sure enough, it was the full first pocket trade. I never got around to getting the rest. I think I will eventually, but there are so many other things I also want to read right now.

I have the first two, just need the other three. Does anyone know where/what issue book 5 leaves off?
READ THIS BOOK, FRED! If you really...REALLY don't wanna buy it, I'll send you the first book, it's that good.

That's so awesome to hear.
When we talked to Moore in San Diego, he didn't give us the answer, but I really had the sense that he didn't know. He's not going to end up doing mainstream work on any regular basis. Maybe some things here and there. It's a giant step to take after something like this. I don't envy the position he's in.

Dude, I don't think I've ever read any books that fast before. TOTALLY not my thing, yet I still love it. A testament to Moore's writing, I guess.

Major score yesterday:
Went to my local shop to buy this fully-functioning Atari 5200 for my brother for his birthday when I stumbled upon the bargain box. I thumbed through it and found the first 6 volumes of Strangers In Paradise for 3.99 a book. My excitement was a little tempered by the fact that there are still 13 more volumes left for me to get.
People who read this sound off. Is this actually as good as Ron and Josh say?

I say, start with the first 2. If you don't like those, you won't like the whole thing.

Strangers In Paradise is a wonderful series. Would definitely take the trades with me on that proverbial desert island.
Began reading the trades to catch up with the monthly. Funny thing is I fell behind and am now waiting for the complete series to be collected before reading it all in trade. When it is all done I am going to lock myself away for a day with naught but the complete trades, a bottle brandy and savor every moment. Some peanut butter may or may not be involved.

They are absolutely worth it. It's one of the best series that I've ever read of any genre period.

I used to love this book. When I took my break because of financial reasons, it was one of the books I missed the most. But when I came back, it was just too expensive to catch up on. So I'm waiting until its all done to get the trades.

I cannot express my love for this book enough. I really can't. I'm trying to get all kinds of people to read it.
My vol. 1 pocketbook has seen more action than I have the past few weeks....sadly enough.
I say, start with the first 2. If you don't like those, you won't like the whole thing.
that's true
I should've qualified.
Just read #39 last night - the Peanuts Freddy Femur issue - that was awesome. I think I'm going to look for the floppy just so I have it

For the longest time I confused 'Stangers' with 'Liberty Meadows.' I thought they were the same comic.
SiP is really good. I just started it maybe 10 days ago and I'm already through Vol 1(1-3), Vol 2(1-13), and Vol 3(1-43). I'm a little annoyed by #43, but I trust that they'll fix it or make it work.
Liberty Meadows I've tried to read, and I just don't get the appeal.

Thanks to the iFanboys I picked up the first Strangers in Paradise pocketbook and am on Volume 3 now...Excellent series all around. I would reccomend anyone reading it. It saved me from a large rant about Civil War this week. Just having the third volume to read made me feel that much better.
I just went to Midtown and found pocket book #4
yaaay
by the way, Midtown kicks ass. I'm sure there are cooler stores out there, but I haven't been to one

Sweet! I'm happy for you.
Since you and DarrOn were raving about it so much, I have it next on my list after finishing Sin City. ;) Sandman can wait..

I just read the first two issues of SiP. What a man-hating pile a crap that is.
Does it get better or is it just more feminist revenge fantasies?

I'd hardly call it a "feminist revenge fantasy" if the guy in question is a highly flawed character deserving of comeupance.
From what little I've read, both sides of the gender coin seem to be portrayed with flaws.

Well in the first two issue a guy that wants to ether have sex or break up is beaten and publically humilated by two lesbians and yet the girls come off as heroic in a twisted kinda way.
I can tell the differance between good people and self rightous sickos which this Katcho clearly is.
Why anyone would think she is cool is beyong me.

From what I remember reading Katchoo is one who has had a shady past and because of her relationship with Francine, is trying to stay on the straight path with her and David. But her past caught up to her present when Darcy came back. That's the last part I remember reading before I stopped.

I'm not getting into a long-form argument with you because really I don't care all that much.
Katchoo's damaged; she's not a self-righteous sicko. There's a difference and you'd see it if you stuck it out. Or maybe you wouldn't.
As for Freddy Femur, I really hope that you're not saying that he's a 'good' person because clearly he's not.
If you feel the way you do though after two issues you shouldn't keep going because your opinion likely won't change.

does anyone know when the next SiP pocket book (Vol 6) is due out? I am officially addicted to it thanks to iFanboy

Well, I've read Strangers In Paradise in TPB form volumes 1-6, which ended with "High School".
I just have to say that Katchoo is very very unlikeable. Despicable almost. Her first instinct when getting angry is violence, whether it's directed at a high school punk, Fred, David, or Francine's breakfast. The writer thinks that her being a girl earns her a free pass, but in my book it does not. If it were a man behaving this way, would we find this character appealing at all? I don't think so. Katchoo is, frankly, a dick. I can't see myself ever liking her or rooting for her.
Francine, however, I do like. At first she came off as pathetic. She reminded me a lot of Grace from Will and Grace in that she had such a strong friendship that it ruined any chance that she had of ever having a normal relationship with someone else. After reading the "High School" arc, I realized that Francine was a promising young student until she ruined her life by hanging out with Katchoo.
My loathing of Katchoo aside, I am totally addicted to this book. It does tend to over-emote, but my need to see what's going to happen next overrides this. It's a great page-turner and I can't wait to see what's up for these girls (and David).
I'm pretty sure things don't go well for David, if I'm remembering from an earlier POW podcast...

While I don't agree with your verbage, I understand the sentiment. There is a hint of "white male liberal guilt" in this book.

as you read further into the story the reasons for Katchoo's behavior comes to light. i feel it makes her more likable but you will need to judge for yourself.

I've read the part about the stepfather, and while that does explain her behavior, it doesn't excuse it.

never said it should be excused just understood.we all have good and bad aspects to our lives and we don't always deal with them in a proper way.
that what's makes strangers so good. the characters are believable.
