View Full Version : Diggnation is NOT Ending!

In an interview on Sirius Radio last week, Kevin said he and Alex talked it over again, and they're having "too much fun" to end Diggnation now, so they've decided to keep it going "for a few more years."

Not that I don't want to believe this, but do you have a link to this interview, or at least the show it was on?

I presume, from Kevin's tweets, Gary Vaynerchuck's show.

As the original poster said it is his Sirius Radio show last week. I'm in the UK, so I don't think I'm able to listen to it.

I'd be interested if someone could send it my way though (or a transcript snippet even).

Dude, if you didn't hear the show, then you "shut it." It was on Gary Vaynerchuck's "Wine & Web" show on 9/23/10. I hope you feel like a total jackass when this is confirmed by other people. I know what I heard him say, and I know I wasn't the only one listening. There doesn't appear to be an online recording of the show that I can find, but here's the tweet Kevin sent out right before the show started:

that's not at all surprising, given the way the community is reacting to Digg v4. gotta do something to keep it all alive.

sigh...relax spaz. there was a reason i threw in the wink. it was to insinuate a kidding "shut it". and why would i feel like a jackass? kevin says a lot of things that never come true, as we all do from time to time. anyway, gary v annoys the shit out of me. this is why i don't listen/watch his show.

Just so there's no confusion, Gary V's "Wine & Web" Sirius Radio show, which is where Kevin said this, is not the same as his online "Wine Library TV" show. It's a Sirius Radio only show, and apparently there is no archive of it. So, if you didn't hear it live, and nobody recorded it, then you won't hear Kevin say that Diggnation will be continuing.

Please, someone else who heard the show, chime in here...

Good point. The only reason I heard it is because Kevin tweeted that he was about to be on live. Otherwise, the only Sirius I listen to is Stern and the channel called "Kid's Stuff" when my 6-year-old is in the car.

In any case, if Diggnation really was going to be ending in December, I think we would have heard more about it by now. Although it does seem kind of odd that there hasn't been any talk of it either way except for Kevin's quick mention on Sirius that it's not ending.

Of course they want to get away from Digg. I am glad the show is staying around, but Digg is dead and they are smart enough to cut the dead weight. Kevin won't be with Digg in any real fashion by early 2011.

But they always went off on tangents and discussed other things. Diggnation was never JUST about Digg. And, Kevin made a point of saying that they would not stop discussing Digg stories at any time in the future.

This is the best news I've heard in a while. Diggnation's been getting a lot better recently, with a bit more drinking and less overall weirdness, where shows would end after like 25 mins.

I do worry about rebranding, but yeah digg's pretty much a dead horse now and it's smart to branch out a bit, so I'm willing to try it. Also I've always been incredibly ashamed to tell people I know that I watch a show called Digg Nation, so if the new name is a bit less pathetic maybe I can be more comfortable sharing the show with people.

I just wish TRS was fixed, cause that show has declined rapidly since the daily nonsense. I've stopped subscribing to it now and just sort of visit every now and again and try a movie review segment then give up on it again.

long live diggnation (or new name)

well the show hasn't really changed all that much in, what? 4 years? 5 years?

I think its time for them to try something new. or go on a tour? that would be pretty badass.

a Diggnation tour of North America? east coast to west coast stopping in all the major cities? they could do it over the course of a month, have a blast, travel and probably rack in money hand over fist doing so.

as a watcher and listener (from before it was called Diggnation and was just them putting up mp3s of them hanging out).. I'm glad they are moving away from Digg-only content and into a more universal thing.. Maybe that will make Kevin feel more free to speak his mind (havent we all seen Kev say something and then think "I now have to make a denial disclaimer so that no inference can be drawn upon Digg.com" etc). Maybe Kevin will speak his mind more. I wish Kevin would sell his stocks.. have afew hundred mil in accts earning tens or hundreds of thousands of $ in interest... where he can just say "F-U corporate guys... I'll smoke some pot w/ Glenn on cam.. I got more $ than 60% of the public will earn in their combined lifetimes" and now I dont need to censor myself.

It took alittle more than 100 episodes for me to see the change and get disappointed in The Dark Tipper (I kept believing)... The whitehat Robin Hood turned into a "social-climber, status clinger".

Alex on the otherhand (while made some $) isnt in the same position as Kevin.. He cant live offa interest on $ like Kev can. But yet Alex seems the more carefree/honest guy on the show.

Will they have a live Diggnation at a strip-club? (which of course they've spent alotta time at in Vegas)...

I wanna see true Alex and Kev... bare bones.. not sucking the ad/corporate teet.. wanna see what kinda munchies they order after smokin some of Hippies nuggies.

while Kev prolly doesnt blunt/joint/bowl it.. I bet he;s got a kool vaporizer or handblown "binger", I had a Chameleon Glass.. I had one custmised I traded for... shit happens tho.

Observations after reading your post.

- You're over-analyzing Diggnation and Kevin/Alex. Just enjoy it for what it is, instead of wishing it was something else entirely.

- You're trying to connect the show with weed for some reason, which is not what it's about, nor is it what Kevin/Alex are about.

- The show will always need advertisers to remain profitable, and that need will always keep them from being truly free to do and say whatever they want. Ford isn't going to sponsor a show that's all about two dudes getting high and flipping off corporate America.

- I think that Kevin's apprehension to say certain things has more to do with his concern for own reputation than how Digg investors will perceive his comments.

It doesnt have to be ALL about weed.. but he could go more "unleashed". They do kid Glen all the time about smokin', Alex did talk about his "Pot buying excursion" in Jamaica (tho he said he was just a poor weary spectator LOL yeah right).

They may lose Ford (maybe not, Diggnation would still have hundreds of thousands of viewers to advertise to) but they could get many different sponsors, Hydrofarm, Sun Systems (I bet the indoor organic food hippie community (like Glenn) fertilizers etc.. Kevin is a pretty "granola" SanFran kinda guy.. if changes to the show include talks of diet and foods (Kevin is big on VitD and some organic doctor dude he's talked about in other casts) etc.. as long as they have eyes watching.. they can get revenue.

As far as Digg... thats why I thought he should just cash out and work there as head developer/guru type thing if he wanted.. he'd still play a big roll in Digg's direction but he'd be more free cause he wouldnt have so many of his eggs in that one basket (and I personally think the "social" bubble is gonna burst soon). Didnt Sir Richard Branson do a photoshoot w/ naked chick on his back windsurfing or something?Do ya think that hurt his reputation? Is Diggnation really marketting toward the prohibitionist bible-belt? I dont think so.

kinda got off onto a party tangent.. but back to how this started when I said "notice Kevin "catching" himself when he was about to speak his mind where his view might not be "politically correct" or when he does blurt out something.. and then "recants/denies that was what he meant? dude Kev.. speak your mind

Also, don't forget Kevin's true passion, which seems to be angel investing/advising internet startups. Digg isn't the only thing Kevin does. He has his "eggs" in dozens of baskets, and he just had his first Angel investing exit last week with ngmoco, which was acquired for $400 million in cash by the Japanese gaming firm DeNA. I'm not sure what Kevin's stake was in the company, but even if it was relatively minor, that's serious money. For example, if it was only half of 1%, that's still $2 million cash in his pocket. If it was 2%, he got $8 million from the deal. You get the idea. Whatever it was, he was certainly excited by it when he tweeted this last week:

. woo hoo @ngmoco acquired for $400M, congrats to the
. team! Also, my first angel/advisor exit!! :) :)

As for dropping Ford as an advertiser in exchange for hydroponic weed growing equipment advertisers, that doesn't sound like a good business decision. I don't think weed is a big part of either of their lives, if at all. I just don't get the feeling it's what they're about at all.

Uh huh... That's like saying bongs aren't all about weed, because they can also be used for smoking tobacco. What percentage of hydroponic growing equipment is actually being used for vegetables? There's a huge difference between buying fresh local-grown produce from a farmers market, and setting up a hydroponic garden in your home to grow your own vegetables.

BTW, part of Kevin's recent obsession with fresh produce is no doubt due to the influence of his now live-in girlfriend Darya (@summertomato). She's a scientist, geek, and not bad on the eyes either. She runs www.summertomato.com, which is a website dedicated to healthy living/eating. Here's her philosophy with regard to food:

well.. I'm gonna be putting up 2 flouros in the back room of my apt. and trying to grow some Habanero peppers over the winter. Going to try doing what my buddies call "hydro in a bucket" because will be using an inorganic growth medium (probably a perlite, vermiculite, and sand mix) and hand watering instead of an automated hydro system or wavetable. Hopefully the 2 CFLs will be enuff light and I wont need to use the 600W HPS that uses more electricity.
You shouldnt stereotype what people will use equipment for

Off topic ... but ...

You might be interested in doing something like this (http://our.windowfarms.org/).

ironically, with our block, we get terrible light for veggie gardening over summer (too many trees, too much shade, not enough direct light), but with the leaves dropping now, our basement windows are getting more natural light, so I am thinking of putting together a window farm.

Back to the topic ... Have we decided if DiggNation is ending yet?

Are you kidding me? I'm not stereotyping anything. If you don't think most of the in-home hydroponic and high-intensity grow lights are purchased to grow weed, then maybe you've been smoking too much of it yourself. There's a big difference between stereotyping and stating a fact. Most of this equipment is sold to people growing pot indoors. That would be the main demographic for any retailer of this equipment who would consider purchasing ad time on a show like Diggnation. That has nothing to do with a stereotype. Come on.

Even with relatively energy-efficient CFL's, after the cost of equipment, supplies and electricity, your Habaneros are going to end up costing a shit-ton of money per pepper. Many dollars per small pepper. If you're going to go through the expense and trouble, at least grow an interesting pepper like the Bhut Jolokia, which is the hottest pepper in the world. They make Habaneros look like candy, and they are orders of magnitude hotter. Take a look at the Youtube videos of people who were dumb enough to put one of them in their mouth, like this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tRq8ExAHzk

I have seven Bhut Jolokia plants growing in pots on my patio here in southern Florida, where the fall/winter is perfect for outdoor growing (summers are too hot and humid).

I have seven Bhut Jolokia plants growing in pots on my patio here in southern Florida, where the fall/winter is perfect for outdoor growing (summers are too hot and humid).

I was reading about the Naga Jolokia which is probably about the same (around 1 mil Scoville rating) which is a Habanero sub-species. I like hot peppers alot and like a nice crisp "bite" along w/ some heat. My Brother-in-law had some "freak" peppers that (I think mighta come from some Fiji Island friends of his family) that in all respects looked like miniature Thai peppers but were hotter than any habanero I've ever had... too hot.. couldnt enjoy any flavor or "tang" because the heat.
"Heat" for me is kinda hard to explain because (to me) there are different kinds of "Hot". To me.. I like the heat in a habanero-spiced dish which is a crisp heat.. whereas some like the heat of say.. an East Indian (usually curry based and then spiced) dish which has some heat but its more muddied and uh.. "oily-heat" (maybe thats the word).
Tried planting some Habaneros "in-ground" in neighbor's yard (I have a parking lot for a backyard) but didnt turn out due to pests/vermin.. a whole multitude of problems. So now want to grow some sturdy plants in containers that can be kept indoors in winter and get "hearty" and moved outdoors when weather is suitable up here in Maryland.

will be my 1st attempt at a "fruit-bearing" plant indoors, I did have a pretty cool "eastern"-looking "shrine" kinda setup at another apartment under a flouro where I had 2 spiderplants around my Bonsai w/ Buddha sculptures, woodcarvings and other "nicknacks" I've acquired.
PM me if any hints/help on pot/container limitations in growing peppers (I hope to prune/landscape them to stay around 2 feet at max maturity, but will be starting from seed again so thats still abit away)
