The year was 1955....
The company was Sony....
The product was the TR-55...
This is it's story.

Actually it's just the Stupid Trivia Question answer. But I think it's still the best Transistor radio story that I've ever read.

The Sony TR55 was released in the US in August 1955 per the book "The Sony Vision" by Nick Lyons. This was a tough sell for Sony as they were unknown in the US and Japanese stuff was considered junk here at that time. The original name was Soni. It is not a Japanese word it was picked because it sounded like sunny. Released on the heals of the Regency TR1 made with transistors from Texas Instruments.

I believe sony held the first press conference and first demonstrated the radio on June 30, 1948. The TR-55 and TR-7 were put into production in august 1955, however sony was not the first to produce a transistor radio. Texas instruments developed the first transistor radio the Regency TR-1. It was first shown on October 18, 1954 and went on sale in November of 1954. Hope i get the camera would love to see that footage as i am studying to major in arts and communications and someday end up at a place like revision 3.

As stated, the answer to the TR-55 is 1955... however I found this that states that this wasn't Sony's first ever product... check out http://www.collisiondetection.net/mt/archives/2003/02/sonys_first_eve.php to see about Sony's rice cooker that failed...

PS - Great prize... (which is why there are so many replies to the question this month I guess) wow... ! (PS - Who ever gets it should upload the video's and send a link ;))
