LOL, I spent a number of years as a Lord of the Rings addict, and even attained fluency, or as much as is possible, in Quenya, Tokien's Elven language on which he based Sindarin, the tongue spoken by the White Elves and the Elves or Mirkwood and...

And I'm a nerd.

All that pipe-weed and mead would make anyone happy.

Well maybe Sam...I think Sam was probaby the only hetero character in the books ... "Merry" and "Pippin" on the other hand ... hanging out in bars together, cosplay in military uniforms ...

Haha. I got mad too. But I have to admit when I first watched the movies (read the books after) I got confused betwen the two baddies too. Why do authors have to make names so confusing....

Hobbit are born beer drinkers.

About the gay thing... It's not surprising that Peter Jackson decided to play up the friend ship between Frodo and Sam. In the books Sam is clearly Frodo's servant. Sam would never be attracted to Frodo because they are from different social classes. Indeed, the whole Frodo/Sam story is about fealty between social classes. This sort of thing is pretty anachronistic. Anyhow, Sam's attraction to Rosy Cotton is pretty unambiguous, both in the book and the movie.

no hobbits are gay. frodo like the excitement of being with a common laborer while sam is in it for the money. rosy cotton is the name of a drag queen sam see on the side.

merry and pippin....well i am not going to touch that one.

pipe weed.......well that is code for penis.

mead? you don't want to know what that is code for.

After spending so much time together on something so dangerous, fighting in a war and nearly dying, your life easily lost with one slip of someone else's actions, it's not surprising that their friendships would have become as close as they did, despite social differences. Soldiers sent to war zones often for very close friendships, and no one calls them gay. When two military men are in a life-threatening situation and think they might die, it's a comfort to hold each other close, and it in no way considered gay. But when Hobbits do it, it means they must be gay? The only sexual overtones are the ones the individual viewers put there.

Oh thank god. I thought I was the only person pulling her hair out in weeping geek rage over that.

Somebody should spank both of them with the hardcover edition of all three volumes .

Exactly. Ok, it's one thing to be confused about whether it's sauron or saruman, but even that kevin was only like "I thought it was saruman" and Alex was actually reading the article. What made me mad was that Alex couldn't figure out how to pronounce Sauron. Have you guys seen the movies? Seen the trailers? Talked to someone that has seen it? It's only confusing to pronounce if you've never ever heard the name before.

Ohhh....looks like doom.

And all this gay hobbit stuff reminds of Clerks 2, esp. the line "...that very f***in' gay look."
