So I am admittedly new to the Linux scene. However I saw videos of Beryl and just decided it was too cool to pass up. So I loaded Ubuntu Edgy on my laptop. I added all the repositories, etc. and actually got Beryl loaded. I can go in and configure it and everything. My problem is that I got a deadly error 11 the first time I tried to run it and now, when I try to switch to Beryl, the screen flashes and then just goes back to the default manager. Also, since installing Beryl, Ubuntu no longer recognizes my network card. Is it best off for me to just reload Linux from scratch and start over or are there some simple fixes?

Last question would be, can Beryl even run on my machine? It's a ThinkPad T42 Pentium M 1.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM, Radeon Mobility 9000.

Thanks in advance for the help!

ok, i've had a lot of problems with Beryl too...in order for it to run (basically), you need to be using the binary (3D) drivers for your video card, a compositing window manager thingy (XGL or AIGLX) and you need to install Beryl on top of one of them...also, what version of Ubuntu are you running and what version of Beryl are you running?

Got it running. After Synaptic was no longer able to see any updates and my network cards stopped being recognized, I finally just said screw it and formatted/reinstall Ubuntu Edgy (was the version I was using originally). I was going through the XGL instructions before from the Beryl Wiki. I decided to try AIGLX. I was a little bit more versed in terminal commands this time around so that alleviated a lot of the problems. 30 minutes later, I got it up and running. And man is it sweet!

Do you think they will offer a CD Distro that simple installs Ubuntu and Beryl together. I love ubuntu and what Linux has to offer. I use ubuntu on my small travel laptop and am considering it for my Large DTR LAptop.

As I am getting older I have acquired a KISS(Keep it simple stupid) attitude to all this and can no longer get into all the configuring of OS's so a simple on CD would be sweet.

My Big Laptop has an nvdea 7800 GTX Go and 2gig RAM and a single core P4-3.8ghz so I think it will be OK with all the 3d stuff once the Driver issues are worked out.

Most definitely. You will get a lot more support for it as well since it is using x86 architecture.

I don't think they will be bundling the two together anytime soon. One of the big benefits to using a Linux distro is that it doesn't loaded with a whole lot. You can use repositories and apt to get most of the stuff you need. There may be a way of creating a kind of slipstream install with Beryl in it already however. And yes, your computer MORE than meets the specs. I have a 2.0 GHz Celeron with 1 GB and a 128 MB card (the exact model is escaping me at the moment) and it runs nearly perfect!
