View Full Version : What is svchost.exe?
I always have at least 4 of them running and at least one is always over 40,000K. Are they important, can I disable them?

the simple version is that they've got to do with networking (i believe) and don't kill them because if you do, Windows will automatically shut down your computer...please use Google next time...

You can kill unneeded services yes. But i have windows XP running on the bare minimum of services and i have 3 running. You can get a program like Process Explorer from sysinternals and view what services are running on which svchost.exe

They are normal windows services... that said however trojans and such have been known to attach themselves to them. If you are concerned, you should run spybot, virus scan, etc. and see if it picks something up. Other than that though, do not kill them, like said before they are required for Windows.
