View Full Version : Why do you keep changing the Formats? (Give us a "legacy" format)

I understand the new reduction of format choices for bandwidth and storage reasons. The problem is I(and many other users surely, though we are the minority) don't always upgrade to the newest devices every time something comes out, and it seems that the new feed choices are aimed solely at "new" devices.

I have a Zen Vision M that i watch my Rev3 shows on, its OLD(like 6+ years) but it still works and i will NOT replace it until it breaks.
I used to use the Xvid format, but then you changed it. (for compatibility with iphone i think even though you still had quicktime feed then, and i would think apple fans would be using that.)
so then i switched to WMV, which had some issues but was watchable, then you changed that again and i switched to another feed (i think quicktime) which had to be converted (but the built in converter in the transfer tool) but worked.
Then a change to that format broke the conversion, but luckly a new change to the wmv allowed me to switch back to that format.
now with the decreased feed choices I've been using the new wmv Large feed that need converted to play on my player, problem is that the built in win7 converter that runs during transfer converts this format in to a stutter-y slideshow.
I get that you need to support new devices and you can't have a feed for every format, but is it possible to have a simple old widely supported format(mpeg?) so that those of us with old players can still watch Rev3 on the go.

TL;DR: None of the new format choices work well on older players, give us a common old SD legacy format for those of us kicking it old-school.

I got this old VHF TV. I want Revision3 to broadcast their video on the old school VHF band so I can use my TV. I'm just kicking it old school, there's no reason to get ride of it if it isn't broken right?

I get what you saying. UHF to DVD/Blu-ray is a bit more of a jump then wmv9 to wmv9.whatever. But point taken.

EDit: Also, a VHS cannot be played in a Blu-ray player but an older version of a format should still play in a iphone.

Anyways, guess i'll just stop watching them on my mp3 player.

You could always transcode them yourself as another option.

Yea, thought of that. Kinda tempts me to write a script that downloads a podcast, transcodes it to a given format then immediately delete the source.
So, I dunno, maybe something useful will come of these.

Also, thanks for an actually somewhat helpful response.

As another option, most smartphones now make pretty good video players that should support the formats used here. If you want to watch it on a portable device you could just download them to there.

I'm not saying run out and buy a smartphone if you don't have one, but you may replace it sooner than a music player and, in fact, a new one may combine your old phone and music player into one. There are also revision3 apps to stream straight to the phone if you wanted to.

The only reason I ever bought an iPod was because it was the only reasonable portable video player (most "mp4 players" are "mp3+1" which is animated gifs and mp3s, as hinted at above). Now, every smartphone can do it and my iPod is gathering dust.

A single legacy format seems like a reasonable thing to ask for though and mpeg is a good example, even if it is low bitrate and/or resolution.

it is rather sad that the two "rudest" and unhelpful comments are from mods...

I get that you likely get this sort of complaint a lot, but that no reason to mock someone, and if it does get brought up enough that its annoying to mods, maybe it is a legitimate problem that need looked into.

TL;DR

Back to your question.

Legacy formats?
Do you have a 8" floppy drive? 5.25"? 3.5"?
Do you have a Betamax? VHS? Laserdisc?
How about LPs, EPs, 45s? 8 track? Cassette?

No? Why not??

There are people still using those formats. They are on their own.

Fortunately, YOU have the ability to transcode into other formats.

Convenient? No.
Doable? Yes.

Learn how to use Handbrake.

The point was that there will always be someone left behind with decisions like this and you can bet your bottom dollar Revision3 would have given it some thought before going ahead with it.
