I just download the divx and xvid codecs since those are basically the only two I ever use. For the rare case that I have a file with a different codec I use vlc media player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/).

I like k-lite, but these are the only codecs you need:
Xvid (can play all divx also)
AC3 Filter
Mpeg-2
And if you use vlc you dont need any codecs at all.

Small warning though on codec packs. ONLY install ONE ever. I've had numerous problems even with uninstalling a pack and trying to install a different one. They tend to get kind of wonky, cause the uninstall never removes everything.

I used to use the k-lite pack but there are a ton of them that end up being packs of viruses or malware and whatnot. Now I use a combination of VLC and 'media player classic' i find that they can play most any format.
I have to agree with darkenessgp, if you install a bad codec pack or the wrong codecs you can cause your machine to be unable to play any content, then your racing around trying to figure out what caused the problems and what you need to reinstall. So I totally recommend just sticking with vlc and mpc for your vid needs.

I second(Or third?) the suggestion of CCCP + MPlayer. It'll play with less resources then pretty much anything else. Other then MPlayer + CoreAVC (but that's for h264 only..)
VLC might be great. But it sucks at displaying subs for video's.

uh no theres a few codecs vlc doesn't play... Real Player for one, but you can get real alternative which uses media player classic. VLC plus MPC and a few codecs... And thats all you need.

Thats interesting to hear about the codec overlapping / canceling out problem.. hadn't heard it before, but probably never had to install them more than once per format. Is there a way around it? I've been using some mediocre divx and xvid codecs for a while, and have been meaning to switch if / when i got around to it... I'm tempted to use the mmc that Striker recommended, but don't want to jump right in and disable codecs (which i will be the first to admit i know very little about), and hope that the new codecs (probably using the CCC ones) will fix anything i messed up..
