Okay so I'm still new to the forums I guess but it can't hurt for some of you guys to help me, right?

Long story short, my current laptop is completely useless. It runs MS Windows SP2 but I get non stop bluescreens, sudden shutdowns, failures of all sorts, sound card doesn't work well anymore, it's just overall bad. I've tried to format, get it all running again but nothing helps and the most annoying thing - the backlight just flickers and doesn't work well it hurts my eyes at times.

I am planning on getting a black macbook. Who here has experience with it and can tell me honestly that it is worth the money? I plan on getting the stock black one, but does anyone suggest maybe putting up the ram to 2GB?

I want it mainly for school work, and iLife kinda stuff. Maybe make a movie or a photoalbum for my family and stuff. Browse the web, the stuff you see the guy from the 'get a mac' ad do :P

Also, does anyone have any clue if they will show stuff at this Apple special event thing? My mum is in Germany now (I live in Greece) where she can easily (and cheaper) get a macbook, but that would mean if anything new comes out on the 20th I will miss out on it...

Please help, should I get one like now? Or should I wait?? And is it worth getting one or should I go with win... win... uh I can't even say it, but you know what I mean. (winblows :P)

EDIT: I also wanted to know, is there any type of TV card (well USB I mean) or something I can get to watch DVBT or antena old school type TV?

I have a white MacBook that I'm using right now, and after using Windows my whole life, I will say I will never use Windows again unless I'm forced to or use it to play some PC games.

If you can wait to see if something is going to come out soon (Leopard is rumored to be coming out as early as march) then do it.

If you can't and you need it for like school or something or don't have a computer now I would pick it up If you really want it.

Once you go Mac, you never go back...usually.

I wouldn't hold my breath on Leopard for March. Apple may seed the final release candidate to developers by March but I think WWDC in June is the most likely candidate for a Leopard roll out.

Geek Brief just posted this cool link for all the potential Mac Buyers. It lets you know if a product or product line will be phased out in the near future. Check it out here (http://mactactic.com/).

Wow that site helped a lot actually. I think I will just get one now. I remember when Mac first shipped Mac OS X the very first one and said first devs, then people can buy it, and THEN it will come on machines about a year later or something. And like that site says; the macbook has only been out for 3 months, 1 week ago and also a replacement estimate of 2 months, 3 weeks. That helped a lot since I thought it was way older than that. It surprises me though how often they bring out new things! Yay can't wait to get my Macbook now though

Still post here though if you want to tell a me about anything else I may encounter when buying a Macbook, maybe any cool accesories you have used in the past/ use now that you might tell me etc.

Thanks

That's the Core 2 Duo MacBook.

The first model came out in May of last year.

So.. thanks for all the help but I went with a windows PC in the end... The specs can be seen on my Xfire account (http://www.xfire.com/profile/vrikis/) and all of that was 1400€ instead of the 13.3" Mac which would have been well above 1600€ (nearly 1700€). I will however get a 24" Mac when I move into my own appartment to watch TV shows on and to use it as the 'main' home entertainment PC/unit thingy.
