I was playing with some Photoshop stuff recently and I think I'm getting the hang of this whole Pen Tool thing.

This is what came out of a few hours yesterday. What do you think?

Yeah, all of it was with the Pen tool. The Pixel Perfect Episode was a godsend as far as that goes.

I've actually never watched that show, I may check it out if I have some time.

I never did until number 18 when he devoted the whole episode to the pen tool. It's really an irreplaceable part of the Photoshop arsenal.

*Goes to "buy" photoshop*

I mess around with photoshop as seen in the CEO thread. But I never really sat down to learn every aspect of it and what all the tools do. Though everytime open it I learn something new.

It is an incredibly deep program. I enjoy "discovering" it the same way gamers enjoy "discovering" new gameplay in their fave games. PS to me is a game. I just wish I could make a living with it.

Duuude holy shit! That is insane! As for the making a living in it, that's hopefully what I can work towards in Toronto... if I get there.

I'm not continuing with it and I'm looking into a 2 year graphic design program.

How come? You seem so up on events and you are very articulate. I went the two year design degree a few years ago. Still barely employed, and not in the field of my choice other than the occasional freelance job. It's a tough market. Maybe Journalism is tough too, I don't know, but everyone on the planet with a computer and photoshop can think they are a graphic artist, but hell, look at my abilities, both in fine art, design, and geekness, and I still can't find the right job.

Not trying to dissuade you at all. Just wanna make sure you are pursuing the right path for you. I mean, there has got to be a reason you wanted to be a journalist to begin with. Has that vanished entirely?

You know. I'm really ambivalent about the photoshop. On one hand, I'm happy to be able to do the kind of photo tweaks that would have required thousands of dollars of lab equipment just a few years ago. On the other hand, I've become a little sloppy about lighting and exposure because I can fix a lot of things in post.

I've even been known to delete offending elements from pictures.

Depends if you want to be a photo journalist or an art photographer or just make nice shots for the family. If journalism/documentary stuff is what you're doing you should not remove anything even if it is annoying to look at and detracts from the subject matter: see kent state photo with giant pole in womans head. But it is fine to adjust darkness lightness etc... Photographers have been doing that since the technology existed.

As far as art photography: Anything goes that accomplishes the goals you wanted to achieve. It's your vision, say what you wanna say. The medium is not the message, your message is.

Family/friend photos? Eh. Do what you will, but it generally falls in between the above two catagories. Make it look nice. Remove the pole from the head... but don't change the context. They are partially entertainment/art, but also documents your grandchildren will see and need to understand the era and history of in the future.
