Excellent review on the guitar hero controllers Wil.
Questions:
Did you get a chance to test the distances on either controller?
-We have a set up with a BIG screen and sometimes need plenty of room.
Was there any lag from either one compared to a direct plug?
How were weights of each one compared to the original?
Thanks Wil. You guys are doing a fantastic job.

I never had any urge to play Guitar Hero until you showed a little bit of it doing the SOS song by the Police. That looked awesome! I may have to try out that game now.
Great episode guys. And since people mostly complain instead of compliment, let me say the audio was awesome on that episode.
Also, Hahn said that the Slingbox was coming out with a new version of it in April that will sling PC media to your TV. That's going to be sweet. As I said in the other thread, I think I'll save my money until that device comes out.
Thanks again guys, great show.

I noticed behind wils head between the children at play sign and the apple candles....that old Compaq MSN internet appliance....I used to have one..oh how I hated that thing always gave me problems and the service sucked after 5 months I snapped one day and punched the screen and broke the LCD..couple years later when I was packing up to move out of the house I found it again..I had so much fun breaking that thing into pieces...biggest pile of shit I ever did make the mistake of getting.
And back on topic great show as always.

Im going to have to wait and get Guitar Hero 2 for 360. I had the first one for PS2 though if I remember correctly I was knocked unconcious by a greedy friend of mine by the plastic guitar and when I awoke it was gone. Either that or I pawned it for more booze money. Yeah either of those work for me.

I already have GH2 for the PS2, but, I will get it for the 360, only because of the ability to download new songs via XBL marketplace. I wont be bored playing it again by any means. I played the first one nearly every day until Guitar Hero 2 came out.

i'm finally getting over that, "you're that guy from star trek", and just see you as "wil" from indigital now.
whatever that show did, it sure took you and jessica over, like a possession. hahn's show has cast his hypnotism on all of us.

I never saw TNG nor did I really care about Star Trek at all until I downloaded an episode of Enterprise to test out the 360 HD TV On Demand thing. I liked it and acquired the entire series. I know most trek fans will hate me for that but byte me.
For me I had to get over you as being from VH1s I Love the 80's series. And in fact I had seen all of those then like a while later watched InDigital and it still didnt click until I was channel surfing and saw them airing it again. As a side not to all this celeb shit IMDB needs to add podcast/IPTV programs to peoples listings.
Anyway back on topic, I suck at Guitar Hero but I was the first person I know of who picked it up (Day1) and no one else really grabbed it till a while later. I did have a chance to play GH2 when I went to Video Games Live but I didnt spend enough time with it to really notice a difference. I hope that Freedom V guitar gets a 360 do over when GH2 drops later this year. If not that one then at least some decent wireless controller, that was my biggest gripe with GH. I would try to do stupid crazy shit with the guitar and get wrapped up in the cord. Yeah I may suck but even I can do stupid crap and win on easy mode :P

Heya. Just got finished watching the episode. Short and sweet. Unfortunately, the audio was out of sync during the episode. Not sure if this has been corrected in a more recent download, but I subscribe to the Large Xvid RSS feed and that is the version I received as originally pushed out.
Hopefully someone can look into this to prevent the problem with other subsequent downloads. Thanks!

-Marshall We tested the distances on both of them, and they both worked about as far away as you could reasonably get from your tv and still be able to see it to play the game. My son took his controller all the way into the back of our house yesterday, and never lost his sustained note (we were playing YYZ, for those of you keeping score at home.)
I haven't noticed any lag at all from either controller, and I've played them on my system, my brother's system, and Hahn's system.
The Ant Commando Flying V is much heavier than the official controller, which is actually really cool and makes it feel more "real," and the Nyko one weighs almost exactly the same as the official controller. Something else I noticed on the Nyko yesterday (I'm still playing with them both, trying very hard to find a way to blame the Nyko problems on me, instead of the controller) and I noticed that the buttons are about 1/2 inch closer to the strum bar than they are on the official controller. It doesn't seem like much, but it's enough of a difference that it continues to really screw me up.

Also I dont know what BS The Ant Commandos is trying to spew or if you guys just misread but no 2.4Ghz stuff needs a line of site, in fact its not even a relevant comparison. 2.4Ghz and even 800Mhz are radio frequencies which can of course penetrate and in fact work better when going through certain materials. Only Infrared needs to be able to read date that way as far as wireless gaming goes. Think those cheap PS2 wireless controller compared to the awesome Logitech one.

I should clarify...to get TV onto your SlingCatcher, you need a Slingbox to get a TV signal (or use a media center PC or something).
Also, PS2 owners that don't own GH2, should watch the next episode before buying it.

Did we say that? I didn't notice that when I reviewed the show. Any RF doesn't require line of site...though solid objects might impact performance.

Its at about 8:48 the line in question is:
"The 'V' uses 2.4Ghz wireless technology giving it a 100 foot radius, and something called 'Smart Auto-Sense'. Unlike most IR devices which need a line of sight the 'V' will just pick it up like magic."
Honestly I dont care I knew what was meant and was really just had checked to see if it was some kind of like "Our 2.4Ghz controller doesnt need line of sight because we worked hard on it" line of PR BS from the makers. And yeah RF doesnt require line of sight else TV and Radio would have some serious issues... :P
And im probably wrong here but I thought I remembered some General Science back in 9th grade saying something like RF waves can go longer if traveling through water or certain solids because its wavelength extends in these conditions. But im probably wrong :D Anyway good I had almost forgotten what a non-special InDigital was like ;)

Thanks for clearing that up. That should have read "unlike IR devices"...the "most" implies it's an IR device when it isn't. We gots some bad grammar going on here.

Another great show!! Wil - you totally RAWK with the GH controllers reviews. However, maybe I heard you wrong, but you said people usually buy 3rd party controllers because they are cheaper than the official release. In this case, the Red Octane wireless guitar sells for $60 on their website. Did you get a chance to compare the two to the Red Octane product?
Also - thanks for taking my request into consideration & posting the links to the products y'all reviewed. That makes it MUCH easier to go back & see exactly what was talked about.
Jessica - loved the hairstyle during your final segment! It had a classic, yet elegant look to it!
Looking forward to the next show!

No large WMV - what the deuce??? XVid is out of sync and Quicktime sucks on Vista...guess I'll look for "Quicktime Alternative" and give that a shot?

Try VLC, it does a pretty good job on that stuff.
I wanted to watch InDigital on my XBOX 360. Maybe I'll just watch it on my laptop.

Will,
I love your writing, your attitude, and your wit. But, please let Jessica or someone else that is fashion forward take you on makeover adventure. Heck, you guys could make it into a show segment: "Where do hard core geeks go to get styled?" I know that you are not rolling in cash and there is no wardrobe budget, but a little bit of time and money can make a huge difference in presentation and in impact. I look forward to future shows on the new set.
Best,
JD

Am I the only one who didn't like this particular episode? I've watched them all now and while I'm impressed overall, but this latest episode left me ... well, it just left me..
Slingbox, awesome. Loved hearing about it. Like Wil, I want one.
That other media thing was interesting, but I guess when it comes after the slingbox, it's not as cool..
The HD Flea is something that just shouldn't exist. Cmon, let's get real here. If I pay $15,000 for an entertainment system then I expect the HIGHEST quality. If I need to add a $1,000 box to prevent digital artifacts, then my $15,000 was not well spent. I don't have HD today and I don't plan on going HD for quite a while. It's too expensive and honestly, I have not seen a single HDTV yet that gets me excited. I've seen the artifacts, mpeg compression issues, etc. If I'm forking out $1,000+ for a TV then I better not see any problems with it.
Guitar Hero is intriguing. I find it very interesting that this game has garnered so much attention. I guess it's kinda like the Wii, it's just fun. I don't have the game at this point, but I may look into getting it.. And it was just fun to watch Wil jump around like a maniac...
The valentines thing was.. ... Look, I'm as into valentines as the next guy. In fact, I was ahead of the curve this year and got all my valentines stuff done almost a week before the big day! But this is a show about technology and the VD segment just didn't seem to fit...
Oh, btw.. I hate those e-card things.. If I were to just send one of those to my wife and expect that to fly, I'd be sleeping in the snow for the next week.. :P
Look, the show itself is great and most of the episodes have been pretty good thus far. Just stay on the technology, k? And keep up the good work ... You guys play well together and the dialogue is fun to listen to..
Lookin forward to the next show!

Actually Guitar Hero 1 and 2 are fantastic games, it's not really the same as the Wii, the Wii games that really require you to jump around (wario ware, rayman, etc) don't have a lot of depth. Guitar Hero has tons of depth and even if you played it with just a regular Dual Shock controller you would have fun with it.

16x9 woho!
thanks I dont nead HD the 640x360 although smaller than the 640x480 but it looks just fine upscaled to 720p
the divix is what I watch and it looks just fine
also for some reason it looked like not all the cameras were calibrated the same like the one in the middle is just fine and the one to the left of that was sorta like it had a red shift and the one to the right of the middle looked just fine but different than the middle and left one

For parts of the show there are 3 cameras. There's actually two combinations we use. Either 3 Panasonic DVX100's or 2 Panasonic DVX100's and a Sony Z1U (set in SD). The Z1U was probably used in this episode and that camera is on the left (right for us, I guess). In some episodes you might notice the color is a tad off on the center camera. One of the DVX100's is a first generation and the color is different than the other two. If we only had two more Z1U's...the show would be HD all the way.
Yes, it's all very geeky, full of model numbers and stuff...yuck!
