View Full Version : Thank-you gifts for guys?

Okay, aside from the obvious blow job. I mean, guys aren't usually into flowers or chocolates. What are good thank-you thinks that can be left for a guy to find?

It might sound cheesey, but I suspect that this is a "minor gift as a thankyou" not a "major present for your birthday" type deal. Other gift cards sound kinda cheap - $10 wont go far at Home Depot or Best Buy, but will get you two DVDs and a popcorn at Blockbuster.

His favorite bev is water since he wants to give up drinking. His favorite alcohol drink is vodka (duh, he's a Russki), and he and his housemates have half a dozen 2ltr bottles already.

Well, each event is VERY different. A thank-you gift isn't as major as an anniversary, but Christmas may be a big bigger and a birthday smaller. :)

Me personally would like cash better than a gift card cause ya can spend it anywhere not just the place it was bought. Even if it's not personal better than nothing.

I wasn't making it an anti any thing thread just that gift cards force you to shop where that person likes to shop at
Dinner and a movie is always good (or gift cards for either). I happen to think that gift cards make the best "thank-you" gifts. You don't want these to be too personal sometimes, but still appreciative in nature.

OK, if a gift card is out, how about cooking for him?
Leave him a "dinner invitation", and cook up a gourmet meal.
Gourmet doesn't necessarily mean difficult, it just means "something you don't eat every day". If you cook it youself, that is even better.
Want a good Beef Wellington recipe? EASY to cook - impressive to eat.

If we are talking Geek wear here, I'd throw in a vote for the stuff Fred produces over at MegaGear (http://www.megagear.com/category_s/1.htm). OK, its the merchandising section for his web comic (http://www.megatokyo.com), but they have some great TShirts that have more general geek appeal.
BUT, I think we are getting away from the point. The original request was something that you could subtly leave on a desk - like a box of chocolates (BTW - what makes you think a guy doesn't like chocolate ... or candy in general) or a bunch of flowers.

It *would* look good on your resume, and can't hurt for college applications.
Hell, it might even improve your chances with the women if they know you have been down there before. If nothing else, they will be curious and ask lots of questions.

I figured it out! On accident.
I was at Barnes & Noble getting the Mr. Boston Bartending Guide (finally!) and saw a Rubik's cube with dogs on it, one being a golden. Now I know he's currently got this thing for Rubik's cubes, and he loves anything with golden retrievers on it. So boom! I got it. Then I got back to work, wrote a note, was going to leave it on his desk, but he was there, so I handed him the cube in the bag with the note, then turned and walked off without saying a word. Well, he ended up loving it. So all's good. Next gift event will probably be a birthday. Though I have some ideas from this thread about just regular things too!

Heh, just because of that other thread: Knives.
Generally speaking, not the most functional or exciting gift.. but as you've probably noticed, many guys find it strangely entertaining to have multiple knives around..
As for other gifts.. i haven't read the list, because i've been super busy lately (i'm currently stranded in Massachusetts right now  -- but i have internet, lol), but i will say that i'm a sucker for books, but you may want to make sure he is not a book junkie with a reading list longer than debugging output for some new program
You could also get him an iTunes (or something similar) gift card.. Or just send him Monkey Mail (http://www.careerbuilder.com/monk-e-mail/Default.aspx?cbRecursionCnt=1&cbsid=c60a15b8410d4bac8460744eb257757a-224992629-W8-2), 'cause its fun :p
