Xorg 7 (http://www.x.org/) is out..

and Im wondering why Slackware's still on the 2.4.x kernel instead of migrating to the 2.6.x kernel.

i know its out there arent any stable packages of it. also 2.4 takes less memory and is more stable and that is just hte default there is a 2.6 kernel in the install.

X.org 6.9 provides the same exact functionality that 7.0 has, so Pat didn't see the point of upgrading yet. Slackware is still on the 2.4 kernel by default simply because it's more stable. You can of course install a 2.6 kernel instead, or compile your own, as most Slackers do. Expect 2.6 to be default on Slack 11.1.

I have slackware 11 installed and everything's great except my scroll wheel. I've never had a problem with it in slackware before, I added

"Buttons" "5"
"ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

just like I always do, but no luck. I've tried running xorgconfig and xorgsetup and still no luck.. I'm confused.

I have option in front of them in the file

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "Auto" # Auto detect
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

The last version I installed didn't work with everything on my laptop, out of the box. At the time I was lazy so I installed a different distro. Now is a nice time to try Slackware again.

thats probably because you needed a 2.6 kernel and 10.1 only had 2.4 iirc

This was farther back in time. I was trying a bunch of distros seeing which one worked out of the box. I tried suse (worked but checked the other ones) slackware (didn't work) and then fedora (worked). I went with suse, but when a new version came out a few things broke. Went with fedora, and then moved to Ubuntu. That's where I am now.

lilo failed for me at the end of the install, I was too lazy to make a boot disk, so...yeah, it was unusable. haha

that was a little more intensive and manual then I like from an install. not quite as bad as FreeBSD though

I looked at the changefile to determine what the benefit would be to upgrade from 10.2 to 11 and could not think of one. Over the time of me using 10.2 (upgrading kernel, packages, etc.) it seems as though there is no benefit for a user already using 10.2 to upgrade. I am sure other Slackers out there had a sweet set up that was up to date already. Seemed to me that everything in 11 I had already included in 10.2 thru gradual upgrades over time.

Am I wrong? What is the differences that I am missing? If Pat had decided to include a fully operating HAL/udev so I don't have to mount devices all the time then I'd be a happy man... YES, I know about automount.

If someone has 11 running already please give some feedback.
