I was suprised that you guys haven't started a thread about this book yet!
I'm really interested in hearing people's opinions on this book. admittedly i initially bought this book based on hype. the writers were great but i wasn't sure if they could all work together. Of course this was before i knew the structure of the book and now it makes sense to have each writer write one of the many storylines.
Now i dont have a deep knowledge of the DC universe so when i heard it was going to star a bunch of characters i wasn't interested in, i was weary. add inthe fact that i didn't have much confidence in any comic company producing a weekly comic on a regular basis and im suprised that i bought it.
well after reading the first issue i thought it would be a mistake to continue buying, but the booster gold storyline intrigued me so i stayed on.
the more and more i read this series, the more i realized that its not structured like a regular comic, its more like a novel, with different acts culminating to a climax nearing the end of the series.
another thing i realized was that the writers were really getting me to start caring about the characters. by the time the question was rambling on his deathbed i really felt for montoya (these were 2 characters i couldn't have cared less about in the beginning)
in the past month and a half the story in this series has picked up steam and never stopped. i went from being one of my last reads (a bad thing for me) to being the first, and i cant wait to see how this turns out in the end!
so what do you guys think of this book, should DC keep up these weekly series?
oh and one quick question: Apparently it was explained, but i must have missed it, what is 52?(and its not the number of weeks in a year.... well it is... but its suppose to mean something else too)

They should and they are - DC Countdown (http://revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3598).

They haven't revealed that yet, it's one of the central mysteries of the series.

If I had to pick one reason I like this book so much it is because it turned me onto so many different characters that I had no experience with. I have since been able to find different things I like and have increased the scope of DC characters I enjoy.

After 52 is over will any of you go back and read it from beginning to end? I'm tempted to do it - if I can find all my issues and put them in order.

The think about 52 that I like is that I am interested in what happens next.
I want to see if Starfire and Adam Stragne get home.
I want to see if Ralph becomes the New Dr Fate.
What the heck is Doc Magnus doing in that Island?
I'm curious about this new Black Marvel Family.
I don't really care much about the number 52 unless I can force someone to pick up that many cards. That joke never gets old.

Its my favorite part. That and the cover of Batgirl and Nightwing. :)

I have all mine in order, and this thought has crossed my mind - but I also know I just never will. Too much new stuff to read - like, say, Countdown when it starts.
I would give 52 an overall grade of B+. There's been some uneven-ness, but that's to be expected with a project of this scope. The series has been full of totally fun ideas: the Crime Bible; Mad Scientist Island; bringing back the alien guys from Animal Man. I'd really love to see these elements continue in some way after 52.

i agree that this is the best storyline. i loved the battle between the black marvels and the suicide squad! but each storyline has had it fair share of kick ass moments; luthor "turning off" the everymen, the supernova reveal, and the emotional trek to nanda parbat.
i was even suprised when they brought animalman back from the dead.
but this goes back to what i said before, all of these moments are very recent, i think DC really rewarded our patience but i was hanging by a thread there....

The things I am still curious about with 52
Why was Hawkgirl a giant and how did she get small again?
Was that really Sue Dibney coming back ot life?
How does Adam Strange get his eyes back?

I don't blame you, i was very close to dropping this book for a long while, it wasn't until about week 35 that i really started to enjoy it and the plot finally felt like it was starting to move to a very interesting place (but hey, thats five weeks before you dropped it so maybe im wrong:rolleyes: )

Found this on Wikipedia.
Remember the blackboard?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/93/52-6-rip-hunter-lab.png
When Booster enters Rip Hunter's bunker in Week 6, he finds it in disarray. Among the details of Hunter's lab, a giant globe is marked with red X's and the words "World War III Why? How?" A time machine sits broken. Notes scrawled everywhere indicate that there is a problem with the time stream, and as noted above, the number 52 figures prominently in these writings. Many of the writings foreshadow and refer to DC Universe events and characters, some of which are not yet introduced by the time of Booster's discovery. A multitude of clocks are all stopped at 12:52 (00:52). Monitors show images of Rosa Parks, Abraham Lincoln, a sailing ship with the flag of the Knights Templar, Elvis Presley, the Boston Tea Party and a dinosaur.
Papers on the floor bear the titles of canceled DC series, including superhero comic Infinity, Inc., 1940s humor title Casey the Cop, and Silverblade, a 1980s maxi-series about an actor-turned-vigilante. Also on the floor is a book titled Who's Who, using the logo for the DC series of the same name, and two notes: "FIND THE SUN DEVILS" and "What is spanner's galaxy?". Sun Devils and Spanner's Galaxy are the titles of two 1980s maxi-series.
A set of blackboards is covered with more clues. Below is a list of the clues, with items followed by DC Comics details that relate to the phrase:
* "TIME IS BROKEN"
* The number 52 in a circle litters the boards, the circles sometimes overlapping. The symbol of overlapping circles has been used in the past by DC Comics to represent alternate Earths, or alternate Earths fusing (such as in Infinite Crisis).
* "Dead by lead?" — In the DC Universe, the Daxamite race is especially vulnerable to lead poisoning. The pre-Crisis Daxamite Mon-El is a 20th century hero whom Superman preserves for 1,000 years in the Phantom Zone when the former contracts lead poisoning. Mon-El re-appears post-Infinite Crisis in Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #23 (December 2006). Dr. Magnus kills Egg Fu using the Metal Man Lead as a bullet.
* "Further time is different" — The character Father Time appears in the limited series Crisis Aftermath: The Battle for Blüdhaven and Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters. Additionally, a number of events in the present day unfold differently from Booster Gold's knowledge of the past.
* "The four horsemen will end her rain?" — Egg Fu mentions "four horsemen", and Isis creates rainstorms to express sadness. Intergang later activates its cybernetic Four Horsemen. Some time later, acid rain falls on Kahndaq. The Horseman Pestilence kills Isis four weeks after the acid rains start.
* "He won't smell it." — Main character Ralph Dibny's nose is reputed to be able to "smell a mystery". According to 52 editor Michael Siglain, this is the next clue which will be revealed.
* "Find the last 'El'" — "El" is the family name of both Superman (Kal-El) and Supergirl (Kara Zor-El). After the fight in space, Supergirl was sent to the 31st century, when she joins the Legion of Super-Heroes. It is also the name pre-Crisis Superboy gives to Mon-El, another hero who joins the Legion one thousand years into his own future. In addition, for a period of time, Conner Kent (Superboy) uses the name "Kon-El" and also serves with the Legion. One Year Later, an alien being comments that, in addition to Superman and Supergirl, there is a third Kryptonian on Earth.
* "MAN OF STEEL" — This was the title given to John Henry Irons in promotional material for the Reign of the Superman storyline that DC published following the Death of Superman storyline. In 52, Irons' skin becomes stainless steel. It is also a nickname given to Superman.
* "Sonic disruptors --> Time Masters --> Time Servants" — In DC Comics, Rip Hunter was given the title "Time Master". The Sonic Disruptors series, was cancelled by DC Comics before being completed, apparently because the creators working on the project could not complete it on time.[citation needed] Additionally, Rip Hunter offered various time-travelling supervillains the chance to redeem themselves as Time Masters and fight with him to stop Skeets' plans.
* "The reach. The reach. The reach." — In the 2006 Blue Beetle title, the New God Metron referred to the newest Blue Beetle as a 'Reach Infiltrator'. It is later discovered that the Blue Beetle was meant to be the vanguard of the Reach race, alien beings reaping planets when they're advanced enough.
* "Tornado is in pieces" — Red Tornado was shattered in the fight in space.
* "I'm not kryptonite"
* "It hurts to breathe" — The Question has lung cancer.
* Circled: "The Scarab is eternal?" — The new Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes, is the new host of the scarab owned by the original Blue Beetle, Dan Garrett.
* "2,000 years from now".
* "Where is the Curry Heir?" In the "One Year Later" stories, a character named Arthur Curry, who looks exactly like Aquaman, appears. The original Aquaman has been transfigured into the Dweller in the Depths, who guides the new character.
* "Who is Supernova?" — 52 Week 37 reveals that Supernova is Booster Gold in a new identity.
* "What happened to the son of Superman?" — The question of Superman's offspring is the subject of a large number of "imaginary stories" and Elseworlds comics, including Son of Superman, a 2000 Elseworlds graphic novel, and The Kingdom limited series, which features the debut of the time/reality concept "Hypertime". Also, Richard Donner's and Geoff Johns' Action Comics run features a boy from Krypton.
* "Where is the Batman?" — A month after the Infinite Crisis, Batman, Robin and Nightwing travel the world and are absent during the year in which 52 takes place.
* "Who is the Batwoman?" — Kate Kane is the new Batwoman, as seen in 52 Week Eleven.
* "Te versus (Au+Pb)" — As noted above, the atomic number of Tellurium (Te) is 52. The other elements mentioned are Gold (Au) and Lead (Pb). Gold and Lead are names of Metal Men, and alchemists attempted to transmute lead into gold. Additionally, "Tellurium"'s root word is "tellus" (which is Latin for "earth"). Tellus is a member of the pre-Zero Hour Legion of Super-Heroes.
* Circled: "Who is Diana Prince?" — In the "One Year Later" Wonder Woman series, Wonder Woman appears as Diana Prince, a secret agent.
* "SECRET FIVE!" — The Secret Six, following the events of Infinite Crisis Special: Villains United, are down one member. In the Secret Six limited series, they recruit the Mad Hatter but subsequently kick him out.
* "Don't ask the Question. It lies." — The Question is one of the main characters of 52.
* "World War III? Why? HOW?" — According to an interview with Geoff Johns, World War III will be an important event in 52.
* "IMMORTAL SAVAGE" — Vandal Savage spends the year depicted in 52 in space, and when he returns, he has lost his immortality.
* "Someone is monitoring. They see us. They see me." — The Monitor returns in DCU: Brave New World. Additionally, series writer Grant Morrison previously has broken the fourth wall in his stories, having comic book characters realize their true, fictional nature. In the Animal Man series, the main character also steals a time machine from Rip Hunter. When Animal Man dies in Week 36, he sees the reader.
* "The Lazarus Pit RISES".
* "KHIMAERA LIVES AGAIN" — In the initial "One Year Later" storyline in Hawkgirl, Khimaera appears as a new antagonist.
* "The old Gods are DEAD, the new Gods want what's left." — The "New Gods" refers to the protagonists of Jack Kirby's "Fourth World" comic book stories whose worlds were created from the remains of two of the Old Gods.
* "I'm supposed to be DEAD?" — Donna Troy, Dick Grayson and Kyle Rayner each receive visits from Monitors who tell them they were not supposed to survive Infinite Crisis.
* "WHEN AM I?".
* Circled: "OTHERS?".

I don't want it to end! Why does it have to end? It's been so good and so consistent and I would have been perfectly happy for it to go on for years to come (well not years but a lot longer) I think it's great for the fact alone that it changed Black Adam into an A list villain for me. Does anybody have an idea of what his new magic word is?

so what did you guys think of the ending of 52?? i thought it had that epic feel that was deserved for an ending of this series. its a shame that didio ruined the ending (the 52 multiverses) because that could have been a neat suprise. although i did like the fact that the multiverse got "changed" throughout the course of the issue. it felt like this entire issue was written by Morrison. it contained so much "time babble" that he is known for that it just seemed like he took this issue. Did it all make sense? definitely not. but if you can accept the fact that your not really suppose to understand Rip Hunter's explainations, then you can appreciate it for what it is, and expansive, universe spanning ending.
I enjoyed it and it felt like it went out with a bang instead of the whimper that was Civil War's ending.

So we went from a multiverse, to a singular universe, back to the multiverse, and soon there's gonna be a MEGAverse?
*collapse*
I liked (not LOVED) the ending. It seemed fitting. I wish I had more to say, but I was kinda underwhelmed by it. But DC did a great thing with this series. Beyond the whole weekly book, which is impressive in and of itself....DC put out a weekly book with C and D level characters that was FANTASTIC. I give them all the delicious Kudos in the world for that.

I guess it would make sense as an independent event. I guess purple and black just couldn't be worked into a costume design from when Spoiler died. I mean, that was his girlfriend. And if Superboy is more important than his girlfriend then ... You know what, I'm not even going to think about it. It's cool man; the fangirls already did your thinking for you. Rule 34 and all that.
I miss Steph. Maybe she, Kon, and Ted have barbeques with Deadman and Barry Allen.

I like to think Marvel and DC characters mingle in their brief afterlife.

So now that it's finally done, what's the general consensu on 52? What'd everyone think of the ending? Personally I was kinda let down. Booster and Rip fighting vagina-bug throughout time seemed kinda anti-thetical to the theme of the whole series. The enitre series seemed so focus on ground-level micro-examinations of the DCU, and ending it with a huge bombastic space fight seems like kind of a let down.
As an experience I really did enjoy it though. I think it was the knid of thing that you really just had to do. You really just had to buck up and buy a weekly book, as I don't think that the book will read as well in trades, and indeed when I've gone back and tried to read the back issues, they don't really read well in big chunks.

Grant Morrison on the new megaverse:
"...And the parallel Earths you see in issue #52 are not the familiar pre-Crisis versions. If you think you recognize and know any of these worlds from before, you'd be wrong. We all wanted to do something new with the multiple Earths so what you've already seen in 52 is simply the tip of the iceberg - each parallel world now has its own huge new backstory and characters and each could basically form the foundation for a complete line of new books. If you like the ongoing soap opera dynamics of New Earth, you can watch Mary Marvel turning to the dark side as her skirt gets shorter and shorter, or you can buy the Earth 5 line of books featuring more iconic versions of the Marvel Family. If you miss Vic Sage as the Question, you should be able to follow the adventures of Vic's counterpart on the Charlton/Watchmen world of Earth 4.
The idea behind the Megaverse is to basically create a number of big new franchise possibilities. It's like having several comics companies and universes under one umbrella, so, as I say, there could be one book or a whole line of books spinning out of the new Earth 10 (I handled that particular revamp, so I can tell you that the original concept of the Freedom Fighters on a world where the Nazis won World War 2 has been greatly reconsidered, expanded and intensified into something that's a bit more Wagnerian and apocalyptic and a bit more adult) That's how I'd like to see the Megaverse played out as we move forward. And no crossovers! Each of the parallel universes should exist in its own separate stream with no contact from the others - not until we have a story worthy of bringing them together."

Grant Morrison's explanation of the new megaverse has lots of creative possibilities. I'm excited by it.

I was at first very hesitant about having the Multiverse come back, and was at first disappointed that this would be the big thing coming out of 52, and building from Infinite Crisis, but after giving it some thought, and having finally read the last issue of 52 that confirms the new Multiverse/Megaverse, I've decided to just roll with it. There are some interesting story ideas that they can play around with when multiple Earths exist, but at the same time I really liked the more simple DCU from the past while (well, as simple as the DCU can get, anyhow).
Overall I actually really liked the series. At first I was skeptical of a weekly book, and I will admit with the first couple issues I was sort of confused and not knowing who a lot of characters were, so I was glad the main storylines were all focusing on characters I at least did know, like Black Adam, Question, Booster, Steel, etc. I think it's safe for me to say that coming out of 52, I now have a lot better knowledge of the DCU and it's more obscure characters than I did going in.
I was quite pleased as the series went on and didn't really find an issue that left me that disappointed or not really wanting to see what would happen next issue. The growth of Booster Gold as a character, and a hero in this series was really well done, and I like the character a whole lot more than I did pre-52, so I'm really glad to see him come out of the series intact.
It's safe to say that I'd actually be sad to have this series over now, if it were not for Countdown coming out, today actually, and although I won't be getting my hands on the er...51st issue, but I am definitely excited to start another year of a weekly DC book.
